{"id":39596,"date":"2021-10-03T17:00:04","date_gmt":"2021-10-03T21:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=39596"},"modified":"2021-10-03T15:29:41","modified_gmt":"2021-10-03T19:29:41","slug":"penguins-fall-in-uni-dome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/10\/03\/penguins-fall-in-uni-dome\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Fall in UNI Dome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams met in the Spring with Northern Iowa shutting out Youngstown State 27-0 at Stambaugh Stadium.\u00a0 This time, the Penguins were heading to the UNI Dome, a place where they haven\u2019t won since 1999, but were looking to upset the 13th ranked Panthers.\u00a0 At the end, the streak was extended as the Penguins fall in UNI Dome, 34-7.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some news that came earlier was the absence of running back <strong>Christian Turner<\/strong> who was recovering from a turf toe injury.\u00a0 The Penguins still had <strong>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/strong>, but how did it play out?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Iowa started its second drive slowly. But soon enough quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Theo Day<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Michigan State Spartan transfer found back Vance McShane who broke a tackle from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>D\u2019Marco Augustin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> going 50-yards to the end zone making it 7-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a nice UNI punt by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nathan Murphy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which landed at the one, YSU needed a drive fast.\u00a0 However a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quarterback sneak and a stopped run is all that happened.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Paddy Lynch<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> punted the ball away giving it back to the Panthers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Keyon Martin <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making plays on defense, the Panthers only hope was to try a long field goal by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matthew Cook<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 He nailed the 44-yarder making it 10-0 UNI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State started to drive down the field thanks to Crenshaw, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.P\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wide receiver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jorge Portorreal <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who gained 18-yards off of a Crenshaw pass, but stalled after a 56-yard missed field goal by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Colten McFadden<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 At the end of one, it was still 10-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With it being 10-0 at the end of one, it was still early and Youngstown State knew that.\u00a0 However, what was once a close game quickly became Lopsided as Northern Iowa scored three touchdowns in the span of about six minutes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those touchdowns were a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dom Williams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30-yard run, a <strong>Bradwick <\/strong><\/span><strong>Shaw<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30-yard run and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Weston<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 23-yard pass from Day.\u00a0 Within the last two games, the Youngstown State defense was out scored by 62 points and change needed to happen in the second half.\u00a0 The score was now 31-0 Panthers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3rd Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of the third quarter, the Youngstown State defense held the Panthers to only a field goal.\u00a0 <strong>James Jackson<\/strong> made a good tackle during that drive along with Martin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Chris Fitzgerald<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others who played an impact in this quarter on the defensive side were defensive end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dontae Cilenti<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jordan White.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins offense however still couldn\u2019t communicate past the Panthers defense when it came to the run and passing attack.\u00a0 Despite a shifty Crenshaw pass to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bryce Oliver<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was another three and out for Youngstown State.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Crenshaw&#8217;s biggest targets, which got the Penguins driving a little bit, was senior tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andrew Olgatree<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mark Waid<\/strong> would finish off the third quarter for YSUs offense with two wildcat keepers as it was now 34-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4th Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the game already decided late, the UNI Panthers decided to rest most of their starters on the defensive and offensive side of the ball, just trying to kill some clock with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tyler Hooseman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Youngstown State defense wrapped up Hooseman in the backfield for a seven yard loss by Cilenti and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Vinny Gentile<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who came in on the assists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the offense&#8217;s first drive in the fourth, Crenshaw was picked off by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Eric Mooney,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but bounced back with under eight minutes to go in the game, finding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/7\/e\/9kr5x10sjr8974\/26056.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Portorreal<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 14-yard touchdown in the back of the endzone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was too little too late however as the 13th ranked Panthers improved to three and one as well as one and 0 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play while Youngstown State fell to 0 and two in conference play and one and three on the season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demeatric Crenshaw: 25-37 for 198 yards one touchdown and one interception.\u00a0 Rushed for eight yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaleel McLaughlin: 12 carries for 20 yards, Mark Waid five carries for 18 yards.\u00a0 Two receptions for 31 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Olgatree: seven receptions for 54 yards\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Burgett: five receptions for 29 yards\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryce Oliver: three receptions for 22 yards<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jorge Portorreal: two
