{"id":39312,"date":"2021-09-27T15:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T19:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=39312"},"modified":"2021-12-13T19:05:17","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T00:05:17","slug":"penguins-lose-to-leathernecks-in-conference-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/09\/27\/penguins-lose-to-leathernecks-in-conference-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"Penguins Lose To Leathernecks in Conference Opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the bye week, the Youngstown State football team was able to rest up, get some rehab, get into the weight room and have an extra week to prepare for the Western Illinois Leathernecks.\u00a0 In the Spring, the Penguins were up big, but a costly kick and punt return gave the Leathernecks the momentum, winning 27-24.\u00a0 This time, it was a revenge tour and to finish the game the winning way. The outcome was the same as the Penguins lose to the Leathernecks in the conference opener.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1st Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown ended up receiving the opening kick, looking to make a statement early on.\u00a0 On a fourth and one, coach <\/span><b>Doug Phillips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and offensive coordinator <\/span><b>Troy Rothenbuhler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made a bold call as they brought out former quarterback, now H-Back<\/span><b> Mark Waid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in for a wildcat sneak, giving the Penguins the first down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few plays later, it was <\/span><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking it in three yards out making it 7-0 Penguins early on.\u00a0 But the Leathernecks came right back with power of their own when quarterback <\/span><b>Connor Sampson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found <\/span><b>Daniel Bender<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 21-yards tying it all at seven.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State found the end zone once more before the end of the first quarter when quarterback <\/span><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took it himself five yards out, going up 14-7 at the end of one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the second quarter is when things started to go in the favor of YSU.\u00a0 Western Illinois&#8217; defense was still trying to find a way to stop both McLaughlin and Crenshaw\u2019s rushing game.\u00a0 The Penguins would score three more touchdowns.\u00a0 Two 35 and 10 yard touchdowns from McLaughlin and a five yard touchdown by Crenshaw.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Leathernecks got into the end zone just before halftime when Sampson found <\/span><b>Mason Sikes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making it 35\u201314.\u00a0 Little did everyone know, that would be a game changer for the second half because as most were already celebrating a possible win, there was still 30 minutes of football left.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third quarter is when things started to change.\u00a0 It only took 15 plays but deferring to start the game for the Leathernecks worked.\u00a0 This time off so trickery it was Tony Tate with his only pass attempt finding<\/span><b> Ludovick Choquette<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the end zone making it 35-21.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State got the ball back but a costly interception by Crenshaw switched momentum once again.\u00a0 The Leathernecks were hard to stop in the late third quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sampson threw two more touchdown passes to <\/span><b>Nathan Karejens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Dennis Houston<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just before the end of the third tying it all up at 35 in what is one of the biggest comebacks in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the beginning of the fourth quarter, both defenses made stands.\u00a0 Sampson was picked off by YSUs own <\/span><b>Jordan White<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but once again, the Leathernecks stacked the box with nine defensive players, preventing the Penguins from running the ball with McLaughlin and the secondary prevented any deep passes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some fans left the game early thinking it was over, but they did not know what was going to happen in the end as both teams were neck and neck, something that no one expected to happen. \u00a0Things can turn around quickly and the Leathernecks had YSU right where they wanted them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams traded a few punts but once it was said and done, Western Illinois had the edge.\u00a0 Sampson connected with Sampson and after two Choquette rushes, it was time to kick.\u00a0 YSU tried to ice Mason Laramie, but it didn\u2019t work as the 20-yard field goal was straight through making it now 38-35.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU with one last attempt tried to make something happen on the return with laterals but to no prevail as Western Illinois gets their first win of the season after being close the week before against Eastern Washington.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is now the Leathernecks second win in a row against the Penguins, making up for the blow out loss at Stambaugh Stadium back in 2019. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Western Illinois Highlights:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Connor Sampson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 33-48 316 yards four touchdowns and one interception.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ludovick Choquette<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: nine carries for 41 yards, eight receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Dennis Houston <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Youngstown State Highlights:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Demeatric Crenshaw<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 13-22 for 76 yards and an interception.\u00a0 20 carries for 134 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 23 carries for 136 yards and three touchdowns.\u00a0 Two receptions for 19 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>C.J.
