{"id":38656,"date":"2021-09-13T13:00:39","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T17:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=38656"},"modified":"2021-12-13T18:58:10","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T23:58:10","slug":"ysu-falls-to-michigan-state-42-14-falls-3-0-in-all-time-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/09\/13\/ysu-falls-to-michigan-state-42-14-falls-3-0-in-all-time-series\/","title":{"rendered":"YSU Falls To Michigan State 42-14, Falls 3-0 in All-Time Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time since 2013, the Youngstown State Penguins under head coach <\/span><b>Doug Phillips <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would head to East Lansing and Spartan Stadium to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/09\/09\/ysu-preview-against-michigan-state\/\" target=\"_self\">take on the Michigan State<\/a> Spartans and head coach <\/span><b>Mel Tucker.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first meeting between the two was back in 2011 with familiar faces in <\/span><b>Kirk Cousins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <strong>Le\u2019Veon Bell<\/strong> beating <\/span><b>Kurt Hess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Penguins 28-6.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, Michigan State came on top again with a 55-17 victory where <\/span><b>Connor Cook<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> threw for four touchdowns and the rushing game by <strong>Nick Hill<\/strong> with over 80-yards and a touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YSU Falls To Michigan State 42-14<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams came into the game with a win in week one of college football, and the FCS was looking to upset the FBS again. \u00a0Youngstown State has never beaten a power of five opponents in the FBS and competing against the Spartans would get the eyes of NFL Scouts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen it already, so there could be a possibility for it to happen here. The Penguins would have to use all their might, especially on the receiving end as wideout Kentucky Transfer <\/span><b>Bryce Oliver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> missed the trip due to COVID concerns.\u00a0 Unfortunately for the Penguins, the first half didn\u2019t go exactly their way.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1st Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Michigan State&#8217;s first drive, the Spartans ran a flea flicker from<\/span><b> Kenneth Walker III<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back to <\/span><b>Payton Thorne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who found <\/span><b>Jayden Reed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 75-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Penguins stalled on their first offensive possession, the Spartans came right back with Payton Thorne on the quarterback option taking it in 10-yards outputting the Spartans up by 14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a slow start on offense. Youngstown State got the ball rolling a bit after the Penguin&#8217;s defense blocked a punt.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Christian Turner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got the ball in his hand and turned it up taking it to the 16.\u00a0 That drive didn\u2019t last long as quarterback <\/span><b>Demeatric Crenshaw\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pass was picked in the endzone, one-handed at the beginning of the second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second quarter was once again the Michigan State show with Thorne again finding Reed for an 85-yard touchdown.\u00a0 Thorne went back to the air later, this time going to <\/span><b>Elijah Collins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 20-yard touchdown making it 28-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After scoring 28 points, however, it started to slow down for the Spartans.\u00a0 YSU got the momentum rolling with little yardage from <\/span><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which then led to a Crenshaw six-yard touchdown run cutting it down to a 21 point lead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, the Youngstown State defense stepped up stopping the Spartans on a few possessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3rd\/4th Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being down 35-7 in the third, the Penguins looked like that they may have had a comeback in them as Turner, one of the last players from the 2017 team bounced it out to the left side and went 26-yards making it 35-14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan State scored once more in the third quarter when Thorne found <\/span><b>Jalen Nailor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 16 yards out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both the Spartans and the Penguins would send in their backups on both sides of the ball.\u00a0 Michigan State brought in backup <strong>Anthony Russo<\/strong> into the game along with Walker III and <strong>Donovan Eaglin<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Youngstown State\u2019s side of the offense,<\/span><b> Joe Craycraft<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> came in on his 23rd birthday to give the Penguins a decent drive down the field with both<\/span><b> London Pearson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Austintown Fitch Graduate <\/span><b>Randy Smith<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the backfield getting touches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drive stalled with the last play being an incompletion with Michigan State, going three and 0 in the All-Time series against the Penguins with the final score of 42-14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan State Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Thorne: 15\/21 280 yards and 4 touchdowns;
