To YSU&#8217;s Spectacular Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, Youngstown State finished the regular season with a record of 8-3 and made it to the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2006.\u00a0 After three wins against Samford, Jacksonville State, and Wofford, the Penguins were just one win away from going back to the Championship.\u00a0 During the off-season we have been taking a look back at <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/03\/26\/a-look-back-at-youngstown-states-1991-championship-run\/\" target=\"_self\">memorable YSU moments.<\/a> Now, we look at a throwback to YSU&#8217;s spectacular game of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This game meant a lot particularly for new head coach at the time <\/span><b>Bo Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his second season.\u00a0 In order to make it however, they would have to play on the red turf of Eastern Washington\u2019s Eagles, who were led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Gabe Gubrud<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Cooper Kupp<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first quarter, Eastern Washington got the opening kickoff but the drive stalled after <\/span><b>Jalyn Powell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked off Gubrud giving YSU early momentum.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins scored the first touchdown of the game on an eight-play drive finished with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tevin McCaster<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> four yard run making it 7-0 Youngstown State.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eagles got points on the board on their next possession when Gubrud hooked with now NFL receiver Cooper Kupp on a few plays leading to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Roldan Alcobendas<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field goal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later on in the end of the first, the Eagles first touchdown was scored when Gubrud found his number one man Kupp putting the Eagles up by three at the end of one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Hunter Wells<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Penguins got the ball looking to score on their next drive but it stalled as Wells was sacked by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Samson Ebukam<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Washington got the ball back and immediately had Gubrud show off the arm strength with an 83-yard pass to <\/span><b>Kendrick Bourne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it a 10 point game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an Eagle punt, the Penguins looked to get some of that first drive momentum back.\u00a0 They would use the running game of <\/span><b>Jody Webb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and McCaster, but would get stopped.\u00a0 That\u2019s when they brought out <\/span><b>Zak Kennedy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who hit a 42-yard field goal cutting the lead to seven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eastern Washington got the ball and nearly fumbled but got the ball back.\u00a0 Two plays later Sam<\/span><b> McPherson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ran the half back pass as he found Kupp for a 32-yard touchdown, extending it to 14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last possession for YSU then came with just under a minute to go before halftime. The drive led by Wells and Webb, finished off with McCaster finding the hole 20-yards to paydirt with it now 24-17 at half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginning of the third started with Youngstown State driving pretty well and playing clock management.\u00a0 Wells found wide receiver <\/span><b>Stefan Derrick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Webb and tight end <\/span><b>Kevin Radar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the drive for 18 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU was driving to the seven before it finally stalled by a good stance by the Eastern Washington defense.\u00a0 Kennedy hit the 20 yarder through the upright cutting it to only four points now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gubrud and the Eagles knew that they could not blow a 14 point lead they had going.\u00a0 That\u2019s when he threw a bomb once more to Kupp and finished the drive off finding <\/span><b>Shaq Hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the touchdown, making it 31-20.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The momentum kicked up a notch even more for the Eagles after stopping YSU and forcing them to bring out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay\/_\/gameId\/400928523\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mark Schuler<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to punt, followed by a face mask 15-yard penalty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was it as Gubrud threw a costly interception to Billy Nico.\u00a0 At quarters end, it was now 31-20.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To most penguin fans now, this is where the tide turned in their favor.\u00a0 YSU\u2019s first drive of the late third to early fourth quarter saw it become the Wells McCaster show.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCaster got a few yards each carry and Wells found local talent <\/span><b>Isiah Scott<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for an 18-yard pickup.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Couple plays later, it was Wells finding <\/span><b>Alvin Bailey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his first touchdown pass.\u00a0 The lead was now cut to four once again in this crazy back and forth FCS Semi-Final matchup.\u00a0 One for the decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Derek Rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Avery Moss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 led the next defensive drive for YSU, sacking Grubud and forcing the Eagles to punt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Shocking Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 6:30 to go in the game, the Penguins pounded the running game, something that has worked all year long.\u00a0 Wells handed the ball to McCaster who pounded the rock 12-yards out. For the first time since the first quarter, YSU now had the lead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following that score, Eastern Washington answered back with power of their own.\u00a0 Gubrud found receiver <\/span><b>Stu Stiles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 38-yard pickup and then Hill finished off the drive capping off a one yard touchdown, putting the Eagles up again and looking to advance to the FCS Championship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is when the unthinkable happened.\u00a0 That unthinkable still lives in some of these players&#8217; heads today.\u00a0 With a long drive by YSU, the Penguins got the ball down to the eight-yard line.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With just a second to go, it was either a miracle for the ages, or disappointment.\u00a0 Wells dropped back and put the ball into tight coverage.\u00a0 Somehow, Radar went behind the back of another Kupp in <\/span><b>Kentar Kupp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Both fell down and the refs talked it over before making it an official touchdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans and players at the Red Turf Stadium of Roos Field were shocked to see what just happened.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The Penguins would make it to the FCS Championship game. They would lose to James Madison 28-14.
