The season is coming to an end and this game had major implications on the line.\u00a0 For former Louisville and Arkansas coach <strong>Bobby Petrino<\/strong>, and Missouri State, it was a win to make it into the playoffs or go out eliminated.\u00a0 For Youngstown State&#8217;s <strong>Doug Phillips<\/strong>, it was to get that first road win since 2017 and finish the season strong.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Missouri State wins Missouri Valley Conference Title<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first quarter saw little on offense as both teams struggled to make anything happen. Both defenses were ready for the schemes the offensive coaches had prepared. Key players in this first quarter on defense for the Penguins were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/dixon_grant_x1sq\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Dixon<\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2017-18\/bios\/jackson_james_is2g\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Jackson<\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/eddington_ty_qlr9\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ty Eddington<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/lenton_quincy_2j97\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quincy Lenton<\/a>. Each combined for four tackles.\u00a0 Meanwhile, Missouri State&#8217;s defensive standouts were <a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/tylar-wiltz\/5720\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tylar Wiltz<\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/tahj-chambers\/5970\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tahj Chambers<\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/kyriq-mcdonald\/6142\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyriq McDonald<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/montrae-braswell\/5991\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montrae Braswell<\/a>. All four combined for 11 tackles and one tackle for loss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things started to pick up after a slow first quarter.\u00a0 With <strong>Mark Waid<\/strong> out due to a wrist and hand injury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/craycraft_joe_aiy6\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Craycraft <\/a>once again got the start. This was Craycraft&#8217;s first start since UNI in week two.\u00a0 Craycraft found <strong>Andrew<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Ogletree<\/strong> and then <strong>Malick Mbjob <\/strong>on two straight passes. Even though the Penguins were then stopped on third down, they still got a <strong>Colten McFadden<\/strong> field goal making it 3-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Youngstown State went ahead a scuffle broke out involving <strong>Tobias Little<\/strong> and <strong>D\u2019Marco Augustin<\/strong>.\u00a0 An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was awarded on both teams and Little was subsequently ejected.\u00a0 The Bears also lost starting quarterback <strong>Matt Struck<\/strong> to an injury.\u00a0 However, that didn\u2019t stop Missouri State from clawing its way past the Penguins. <strong>Jeremiah Wilson<\/strong> had a few good runs before scoring from three yards out. The rushing touchdown made it 7-3 going into the half.\u00a0 Both teams were in need of a better offensive turnout for the second half.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first two quarters had these two teams locked in a defensive battle and seemed like this would come down to the wire.\u00a0 However, in the third quarter, things changed quickly on both sides.\u00a0 Missouri States&#8217; first drive of the second half took only 13 plays. Backup quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/jaden-johnson\/5946\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaden Johnson<\/a> scrambled several times during the drive that ended in a touchdown pass. Johnson found <a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/damoriea-vick\/5712\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damoriea Vick <\/a>eight yards out and extended the Bears&#8217; lead 14-3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins had a good drive going on their first possession of the second half, but an illegal formation put a stop to the momentum.\u00a0 On fourth and short, Craycraft gave the ball to <strong>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/strong> but he was stopped for a loss of nine. This forced a turnover on downs and swung the momentum back to Missouri State. After that, it was another Bears touchdown. Johnson found Vick for 32-yards extending the lead to 21-3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State needed to make a 17 point comeback if it wanted to end its season strong. In the fourth quarter, it started out good as former Liberty Leopard, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/rushton_dra_o487\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dra Rushton<\/a>, got some playing time and drove the Penguins down the field. He scored on a six-yard pass from Craycraft to close the gap 21-10.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins got the ball back after a Bears three-and-out looking to cut the Missouri State lead. Unfortunately, Youngstown State tried a trick play and brought in the other quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/d2o2figo6ddd0g.cloudfront.net\/o\/3\/wkdbwnjp6xnyby\/MSU-09.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Demeatric Crenshaw<\/a>. Craycraft passed it backward, but the Bears weren&#8217;t fooled, causing a fumble and becoming CO-MVFC champions, winning 21-10 for the first time in 31 years. Petrino turned a team that only had one win in 2019 into a potential FCS contender.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Craycraft:<\/strong> 10-24 1TD, seven rushed for 22 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>McLaughlin:<\/strong> 20 car, 110 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>London Pearson:<\/strong> seven attempts for 37 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Rushton:<\/strong> four attempts for 24 yards and a receiving touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>CJ Charleston:<\/strong> two receptions for 45 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ogletree:<\/strong> three receptions for 22 yards, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Natavious Payne:<\/strong> two receptions for 15 yards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mbodj:<\/strong> one reception for 11 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/coates_jake_0px4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Coates<\/strong><\/a>: last week broke the all-time punt returns record and this week had 33 yards in return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missouri State Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Struck:<\/strong> finished 1-6 nine yards, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Johnson:\u00a0<\/strong> 6 of 12 73 yards and two touchdowns, 11 rushing attempts for 73 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wilson:<\/strong> five rushes for 14 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/celdon-manning\/5949\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Celadon Manning<\/strong>:<\/a> 22 carries for 105 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Vick:<\/strong> five receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/missouristatebears.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/lorenzo-thomas\/5711\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lorenzo Thomas<\/strong>:<\/a> One reception for 21 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jordan Murray:<\/strong> one reception for two yards. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Wiltz:<\/strong> 12 total tackles and three tackles for loss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up Next:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (1-6) looks to end the season on a high note. The Penguins have their makeup game against the sixth-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks (4-1) who have been inactive a bit due to COVID-19 outbreaks.\u00a0 Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET on April 17th on WBCB or ESPN+.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with winning the Missouri Valley Conference Title, Missouri State still may not make the postseason.
