{"id":35221,"date":"2021-03-07T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2021-03-07T18:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/?p=35221"},"modified":"2021-03-07T10:16:34","modified_gmt":"2021-03-07T15:16:34","slug":"youngstown-state-drops-game-to-southern-illinois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/03\/07\/youngstown-state-drops-game-to-southern-illinois\/","title":{"rendered":"Youngstown State Drops Game To Southern Illinois"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last couple of weeks have been tough for Youngstown State.\u00a0 First, at Fargo against North Dakota State, the Penguins defense held really well.\u00a0 However, they couldn\u2019t move the ball down the field as they would lose against the Bison 25-7.\u00a0 The next week, the same thing but this time they were shutout against <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2021\/02\/28\/youngstown-state-falls-to-uni-in-home-opener\/\" target=\"_self\">Northern Iowa 21-0<\/a>.\u00a0 This week, was another tough challenge as the Penguins hosted the 11th ranked Southern Illinois Salukis.\u00a0 This is the same team that ended the Bisons winning streak last week 38-14.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Youngstown State drops second home game to Southern Illinois.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was something different from the last first quarter starts.\u00a0 The difference was YSU driving down the field with their official starting quarterback <\/span><b>Mark Waid.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Waid won the job over <\/span><b>Joe Craycraft<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this week, ending the two-quarterback system. YSU opened up with a <\/span><b>Jaleel McLaughlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 10-yard run. And finally ending the drive with a Waid rushing touchdown.\u00a0 The <\/span><b>Colten McFadden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> extra point was blocked making it 6 to 0 in the early first.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins not only came up big on offense but on defense on Southern Illinois&#8217; first drive, as quarterback <\/span><b>Nic Baker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was picked off by <\/span><b>Keyon Martin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was returned for 27-yards.\u00a0 Few drives later, and it was the offense with the momentum once again as Waid gave the ball to McLaughlin who went for a 10-yard score.\u00a0 The two-point conversion came up short making it 12-0 Penguins at the end of the first quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Salukis needed a score so they decided to slow down the Youngstown State defense by playing the hurry-up offense.\u00a0 Quarterback Baker gave the ball to his Javon Williams Jr for five of the seven plays, scoring the touchdown.\u00a0 Thus, cutting the lead to five as Southern Illinois now had the momentum on their side.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State showed grit on offense that they had trouble showing the last two games.\u00a0 Luckily, with the power of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/bios\/pearson_london_rms3\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b> London Pearson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Waid, the Penguins converted both fourth-down attempts and finished off the drive with another McLaughlin touchdown extending by eight with just under two minutes to go.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIU got the ball back and coach <\/span><b>Nick Hill <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Blake Rolan\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offense once again played the hurry up.\u00a0 This time it was not with the running game, but instead, the passing game as Baker found his receivers in<\/span><b> Avante Cox<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jerron Rollins.\u00a0 <\/b>Baker <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then decided to take it himself 17-yards out making it 19-13. The momentum was at an all-time high.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third quarter is when shoot-out starts.\u00a0 First thing is that the Saluki would take the lead for the first time in the afternoon as Baker led those dogs down the field.\u00a0 Baker to <\/span><b>Justin Strong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two yards into the endzone making it 20-19.\u00a0 Not to mention the Saluki defense also doing wonders for their team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, Youngstown State wanted to keep that first-half momentum. However, it died down as Waid was stopped by Southern Illinois defense led by <\/span><b>James Ceasar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> Anthony Knighton.\u00a0<\/b> Thus, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forcing YSU to bring out <\/span><b>Paddy Lynch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in punt formation.\u00a0 The Saluki\u2019s then drive down the field after, settling for a 22-yard field goal after a stop by <\/span><b>Grant Dixon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Pat\u00a0 Minenok<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Penguins.\u00a0 At the end of the third, it was 23-19. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State opened up the fourth just like how they finished the third on offense.\u00a0 They used quarterback draws or scrambles with Waid and handoffs to McLaughlin.\u00a0 Waid once again scored from a yard out cutting the lead to one.\u00a0 YSU\u2019s hopes got a little darker however as Baker on the next possession went to <\/span><b>Landon Lenoir.\u00a0 <\/b>Lenoir <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">escaped YSU\u2019s secondary and went 37-yards to score as the Southern Illinois lead jumped to eight and was now 30-22.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Waid and the Penguins had one more opportunity, but hopes of getting coach Phillips his first win were shattered with a minute to go on a fourth and four.\u00a0 Waid would escape the pressure and had an opportunity to run for it, but with limited time left, he went downfield to the goal line looking for <strong>Natavious Payne<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the pressure by <\/span><b>Chucky Sullivan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the pass fell short.\u00a0 The first win for YSU will have to wait another week as they fall 30-22.\u00a0 YSU still leads the series 17-14-1 since 1965.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU- 94 passing yards.\u00a0 Mark Waid- 10 of 22, 94 yards 0TDs, 0INTs.\u00a0 23 ATTPS, 73 rushing yards, one touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jaleel McLaughlin- 26 attempts, 124 yards, and two touchdowns.\u00a0 London Pearson- four attempts for seven yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Ogletree- one reception for 33 yards.\u00a0 Christian Turner- two receptions for 20 yards. Malick Mbodj- three receptions for 14 yards.\u00a0 Natavious Payne- two receptions for 13 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant Dixon 10 total tackles, Griffin Hoak nine total tackles.\u00a0 Pat Minenok five total tackles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SIU Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">139 yards passing on offense.\u00a0 Nic Baker 13-18, 139, 2TDs, 1INT. Four attempts, 32 yards, and a touchdown.\u00a0 Romeir Elliott, 18 Car, 97 yards, Javon Williams Jr. Nine carries for 32 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landon Lenoir- Three REC, 64 yards, and a touchdown. Justin Strong.\u00a0 Two REC, eight yards, and a touchdown. <\/span><b>Clayton Bush<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 10 total tackles.\u00a0 <\/span><b>Bryson Strong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nine total tackles, one sack, and forced fumble.
