And it was still a blowout. Despite a second-half surge, the Buckeyes took care of the Scarlett Knights 49-27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 49 points that Ohio State scored is tied for the fewest they have put up against Rutgers. Similarly, Rutgers\u2019 27 points is the most they have ever scored in the series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a 35-3 halftime lead for the Buckeyes, the Scarlet Knights outscored their opponent 24-14 in the second half. Fortunately for Ohio State, the gap they created was too large to be surrendered. But it made for an interesting game&#8211;too interesting for Ohio State fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio State Defeats Rutgers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite how competitively Rutgers has been so far this year, the talent disparity was clear. Though the talent won out in the end, Ohio State had plenty of problems to nitpick. From penalties to missed tackles to busted coverages, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/ryan-day-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Day<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have plenty to fix in practice this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was about as frustrating as a 49-point game can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Fields<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/justin-fields-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Fields<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been on fire this season, and kept it going against Rutgers. Fields was 21 for 25 with 262 yards and four passing touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown to his scoresheet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In typical Fields fashion, he accounted for six touchdowns and four incompletions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Wilson<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buckeyes sophomore receiver is playing at a historical level this season. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/garrett-wilson-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garrett Wilson<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now the third Buckeye receiver to have three straight 100-yard games. He joins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/david-boston-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Boston<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/terry-glenn-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Glenn<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is two games behind <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cris-carter-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cris Carter<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The way Fields has played this year, there is no reason to believe that Wilson can\u2019t get five straight and join Carter, or even surpass him this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running game<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The running game is still trying to recover from the loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jk-dobbins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.K. Dobbins<\/a>. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/master-teague-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Master Teague<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has taken over as the leading back, but still doesn\u2019t look very impressive. Taking away his longest run, Teague only earned 3.2 yards per carry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transfer running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/trey-sermon-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Sermon <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fared worse, gaining only 2.9 yard per carry without his longest run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio State can overcome this stagnant rushing attack with Fields. But if the Buckeyes want to advance in the playoffs, they\u2019ll need to start figuring out how to run the ball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trick Plays<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutgers couldn\u2019t match up with Ohio State in talent, but made up for it with some razzle-dazzle. Rutgers scored a touchdown on a lateral to left tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/raiqwon-oneal-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raiqwon O\u2019Neal<\/a>. They later scored on a lateral during a punt return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running a conventional offense got Rutgers three points in the first half.
