{"id":29485,"date":"2020-05-14T09:00:40","date_gmt":"2020-05-14T13:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=29485"},"modified":"2020-05-13T19:35:07","modified_gmt":"2020-05-13T23:35:07","slug":"four-ohio-state-records-that-will-be-threatened-in-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/05\/14\/four-ohio-state-records-that-will-be-threatened-in-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Records That Will Be Threatened at Ohio State in 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At Ohio State, it&#8217;s hard to find records that will be threatened in any given year. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a school with a storied history, there are a lot of records that are likely unbreakable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/dwayne-haskins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dwayne Haskins<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 4,831 passing yards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/keith-byars-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Keith Byars<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 336 rushing attempts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tom-cousineau-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tom Cousineau<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s 211 tackles won\u2019t even be threatened, let alone broken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are a few records that are within reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way that offenses are becoming more and more explosive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/ryan-day-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Day<\/strong><\/a> might have a few record-breakers on his roster. Even though Haskins and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jt-barrett-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>J.T. Barrett<\/strong><\/a> have demolished most of Ohio State\u2019s records on offense, there might be a few that they left within reach. Most of the records that will be threatened in 2020 will be on offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the records on defense are likely untouchable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chase-young-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chase Young<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s sack record is the most realistic, but odds are that no one will get close this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most career records are also out of reach this year. In order to break a career record at Ohio State, someone will need to start for three full years, if not four. No one on the current squad has the past success that they would need to pursue a career record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four single-season records that are within reach by the end of the 2020 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Four Records That Will Be Threatened at Ohio State in 2020<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 Touchdown Passes<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently held by Haskins<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/justin-fields-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Justin Fields<\/strong><\/a> threw for 41 touchdowns in his first year as a Buckeye. After only one season of play in Columbus, it would only take 16 more passes for Fields to be second all-time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his second year in Day\u2019s system, and with better chemistry with his top receivers, Fields\u2019 passing numbers will only improve.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Haskins\u2019 records all seemed unbreakable when he left Ohio State, Fields got surprisingly close to his touchdown mark. His personal best of 41 is second in Buckeye history. 50 is perfectly plausible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">54 Total Touchdowns<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently held by Haskins<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems like every quarterback that suits up for Ohio State sets the bar higher than one before him. Haskins broke Barrett\u2019s record after Barrett broke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/braxton-miller-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Braxton Miller<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s record. Fields could break Haskins\u2019 record before all is said and done.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fields had 51 total touchdowns in 2019, so getting only four more sounds easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, Fields\u2019 passing production should improve, which would increase his total.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His rushing production should also improve. Without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jk-dobbins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>J.K. Dobbins<\/strong><\/a>, more of the responsibility of the rushing attack will fall on Fields this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17 Receiving Touchdowns<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/terry-glenn-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Glenn<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is going to be a tough one, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chris-olave-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chris Olave<\/strong><\/a> is in the perfect situation to do it this year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is a clear number one receiver this year, lining up opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/garrett-wilson-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Garrett Wilson<\/strong><\/a> and a group of mostly freshmen receivers. In his second year with Fields, Olave is poised for a breakout year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olave scored 12 touchdowns in 2019 on 48 receptions, which was the fourth-highest total in school history. The addition of five more touchdowns is within reach. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three of Olave\u2019s teammates at wide receiver are <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2020\/04\/27\/ohio-state-wrap-up-of-the-2020-nfl-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">currently on NFL rosters<\/a>, so now is Olave\u2019s opportunity to break out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90.0% Field Goal Percentage<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/drew-basil-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew Basil<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2013, Basil made nine of the ten field goals he attempted. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/blake-haubeil-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Haubeil<\/a><\/strong> only missed two field goals in 2018 but attempted 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Haubeil can attempt the same number of kicks, but miss one fewer, he will have the highest field goal percentage in school history. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haubeil already has the highest career field goal percentage at Ohio State.
