{"id":29416,"date":"2020-05-07T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=29416"},"modified":"2020-05-05T15:49:05","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T19:49:05","slug":"top-ohio-state-breakout-candidates-for-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/05\/07\/top-ohio-state-breakout-candidates-for-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Top Ohio State Breakout Candidates for 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ohio State Buckeyes lost 14 players to the NFL in April, leaving opportunity for some\u00a0 breakout candidates in the 2020 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may have lost half of their starters, but Ohio State doesn\u2019t rebuild; they reload.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not uncommon for players to come out of nowhere and destroy the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jeffrey-okudah-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jeffrey Okudah<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/dwayne-haskins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dwayne Haskins<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/malik-hooker-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Malik Hooker<\/strong><\/a> are all examples of players who had one breakout season before becoming a first round draft pick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jk-dobbins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>J.K. Dobbins<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chase-young-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chase Young<\/strong><\/a> had their breakout seasons early and built on it seasons later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio State always finds a way to fill the holes in their lineups without missing a beat. This year, there are 14 holes between the offense and defense. This leaves plenty of room for a young up-and-coming player to break out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is plenty of talent and depth on the roster. It\u2019s only a matter of who steps up and takes the opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Ohio State Breakout Candidates for 2020<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julian Fleming<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Buckeyes boasted a talented stable of wide receivers over the last two years. But most of them are now playing on Sundays, so it\u2019s next man up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chris-olave-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chris Olave<\/strong> <\/a>will enter his final year, presumably, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/garrett-wilson-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Garrett Wilson<\/strong><\/a> will be lined up in the slot. Whoever is lined up opposite Olave is going to get a lot of opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Julian Fleming<\/strong> is one of many talented freshman receivers Ohio State has secured. He was an absolute stud in high school, and will come in and contribute right away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleming is walking into a perfect situation. Olave and Garrett will draw a lot of double teams, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/justin-fields-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Justin Fields<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/trey-sermon-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trey Sermon<\/strong><\/a> will keep linebackers focused on the backfield. He is going to get a lot of favorable coverages as a freshman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleming won\u2019t be the only freshman receiver to draw attention. <strong>Jaxon Smith-Njigba<\/strong>, <strong>Mookie Cooper<\/strong>, and <strong>Gee Scott Jr<\/strong>. will also try to break into the offense. Combine them with sophomores <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jameson-williams-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jameson Williams<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kamryn-babb-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kamryn Babb<\/strong><\/a>, and the Ohio State offense will have plenty of fresh faces working for their offense.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicholas Petit-Frere<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offensive line doesn\u2019t always draw the attention it deserves, but some of Ohio State\u2019s best players are up front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/branden-bowen-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Branden Bowen<\/strong><\/a> vacated the right tackle spot, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nicholas-petit-frere-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nicholas Petit-Frere<\/strong><\/a> will slide into that role. Petit-Frere was last seasons\u2019 swing tackle, but should have no problems starting on the right side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Fleming, Petit-Frere will try not to have his name called every play. His work won\u2019t show up on highlight reels, but he will be a force for the line over the next few seasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zach Harrison<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The returning player on the defensive line with the most snaps in 2019 is hardly a breakout candidate. But Chase Young became so prominent that he almost completely overshadowed the rest of the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/zach-harrison-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Harrison<\/strong><\/a> was the teams\u2019 second defensive end in 2018, but as a freshman among upperclassmen he didn\u2019t get much spotlight. He was fourth on the Buckeyes\u2019 defensive line in total tackles and sacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Young, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/davon-hamilton-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Davon Hamilton<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jashon-cornell-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jashon Cornell<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/robert-landers-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Robert Landers<\/strong><\/a>, entered the 2020 NFL Draft. Harrison had the largest role in 2019 among returning defensive linemen. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2020\/03\/29\/ohio-state-defensive-line-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He should be the next dominant defensive lineman<\/a> to emerge from <strong>Larry Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s stable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of all the opportunity on the defensive line, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tyreke-smith-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyreke Smith<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/tyler-friday-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyler Friday<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/javontae-jean-baptiste-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Javontae Jean-Baptiste<\/strong><\/a> will also take a step forward in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sevyn Banks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio State has the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2020\/04\/18\/ohio-state-defensive-backs-position-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">daunting task of replacing two of their three cornerbacks<\/a>, both of whom were first round picks in the NFL draft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/shaun-wade-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Shaun Wade<\/strong><\/a> will move from the slot to the boundary, leaving the opposite side for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/sevyn-banks-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sevyn Banks<\/strong><\/a> to take over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banks has the same dimensions as Okudah (6\u20190\u201d, 200 lbs), so he\u2019ll fit right in as Ohio State\u2019s next lock down corner. He has had limited opportunities to show his potential so far in his career, with most of his snaps coming from special teams. But the junior has performed admirably when given the chance, so he will shine when finally given the starting role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/marcus-williamson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Williamson<\/a> <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cameron-brown-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cameron Brown<\/strong><\/a> will also have expanded roles in 2020, so defensive backs coach <strong>Kerry Coombs<\/strong> will have plenty of fresh talent at his disposal.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ohio State Buckeyes lost 14 players to the NFL in April, leaving opportunity for some\u00a0 breakout candidates in the 2020 season.
