{"id":29282,"date":"2020-04-25T13:00:42","date_gmt":"2020-04-25T17:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=29282"},"modified":"2020-04-25T11:59:51","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T15:59:51","slug":"ysus-2012-win-over-pitt-a-look-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/04\/25\/ysus-2012-win-over-pitt-a-look-back\/","title":{"rendered":"YSU&#8217;s 2012 Win Over Pitt; A Look Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>Eric Wolford<\/strong> era at Youngstown State from 2010 to 2014 was very up and down.\u00a0 They did have <strong>Kurt Hess, <\/strong>who was one of the best quarterbacks at YSU. The defense often struggled. Yet, there was a special moment to come. We take a walk down memory lane with YSU&#8217;s 2012 Win Over Pitt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming into 2012, fans did not know what to expect.\u00a0 They were hyped up for the last few seasons, only to fall off a cliff.\u00a0 For their first game, YSU had to face off against an FBS Pittsburgh Panthers team that finished with a disappointing six and seven record.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, Pitt had to regroup with new head coach Paul Chryst.\u00a0 The year before, they were under coach Todd Graham who resigned and took the head coaching job at Arizona State.\u00a0 The Panthers hoped that this good start to the 2012 season would get off to a fast start.\u00a0 However, their first game not only had an impact on their season, but shocked the college football world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview\/First Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most FBS vs FCS games, the betting lines and experts picked Pitt to blow out Youngstown State.\u00a0 In their first meeting in 2005, the Panthers took care of the Penguins 41-0.\u00a0 The second time, YSU did get on the board with a field goal, but still lost 38-3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State finished their 2011 season 6-5, which was an improvement from the 3-8 they had in 2010, but still work needed to be done.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitt meanwhile had to suspend six players right before the game because of disciplinary reasons. Even so, Pitt was confident that they would come into this game taking care of YSU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU got off to a quick start as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dubem Nwadiogbu<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stripped the ball from the hands of<strong> Ray Graham<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jeremy Edwards<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recovered the fumble, stopping the Panthers drive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Youngstown State offense showed their power on their first drive.\u00a0 Quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kurt Hess<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andre Stubbs<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 27-yard touchdown making it 7-0 penguins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitt came right back however as quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Tino Sunseri<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three some passes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Hubie Graham<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mike Shanahan <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for some big gains.\u00a0 They finished the drive off with a four-yard touchdown run by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Isaac Bennett<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tying it at seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins started the second the same as the first. <\/span><b>\u00a0Kurt Hess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nate Adams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 16-yard pickup and then a nice pass to talented running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2020\/03\/08\/top-five-youngstown-state-running-backs\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jamaine Cook<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all the way down to the Panthers four.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU had to regroup however after they nearly lost the ball.\u00a0 That\u2019s when Hess found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Will Shaw <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making it 14-7 and Pitt fans had to question if the players being suspended was the reason for this being a close game.\u00a0 They kept their cool however, as they thought their Panthers would come back and win 40-14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, Pitt did get a field goal on their next possession for a little momentum. But they were unable to score any other points before the end of the second quarter, making it 14-10 at halftime.\u00a0 This was unfamiliar territory for the Pitt Panthers as they had been known to blow teams like this out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, all of the Penguin players were celebrating what was going on, but they could not let up.\u00a0 They had to keep on grinding and stay focused on the second half and to see if this lead can extend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Quarter\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU received the kickoff at the start of the second half and the scoring did not stop.\u00a0 On the opening play of the second half, Hess found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kintrell Disher <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for an 18-yard pickup.\u00a0 A few plays later, on a fourth and one, that talented Penguin&#8217;s offense did the classic halfback pass as <strong>Jamaine Cook<\/strong> found tight end, <strong>Will Shaw<\/strong>, for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fV03njcLrTw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23 yard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> touchdown and you could hear the boos coming from the Pitt faithful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU was now up 21-10 and Pitt needed to have some sort of strategy, or else SportsCenter would be on them and they\u2019d be known as the laughing stock in college football. A few possessions later,<\/span><b> Isaac Bennett<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drove the Panthers all the way down to the Penguins 21, looking to cut the deficit to four.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They would have to go for it on a fourth and one but were stopped short by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Travis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Teven Williams<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ending the third quarter and the stadium was becoming emptier by the second.\u00a0 Fans could not believe what was happening.\u00a0 To them, this was a disgusting act that brought shame to every single Panthers fan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth Quarter<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like before, Youngstown State had another hot start, but now it was crunch time and they couldn&#8217;t afford a mishap. Cook rushed for a 13-yard pickup on his first carry and decided to give him the rock more.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Andre Stubbs<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got some carries as well and would actually give the penguins their final touchdown of the night, making it 28-10.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitt got one more touchdown before the game&#8217;s end when <strong>Tino Sunseri<\/strong> threw a 35-yard touchdown to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joshua Brinson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 After a Penguins field goal, they got the ball back, but <strong>Julius Childs<\/strong> forced <strong>Devin Street<\/strong> to fumble the football and <strong>Twin Fernandes<\/strong> recovered, making the final from Heinz Field 31-17 Youngstown State.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest of the season<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_Youngstown_State_Penguins_football_team\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2012 win over Pitt gave them their first win over a big-time FBS football program and started out with four straight wins. They even broke a winless streak against the Northern Iowa Panthers.\u00a0 However, the Penguins then lost four straight to North Dakota State, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, and South Dakota State. They missed the playoffs for the sixth straight year, finishing with a record of seven and four and four and four in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_Pittsburgh_Panthers_football_team\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pitt <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would go on to finish with a record of six and seven in Chryst\u2019s first year as head coach.\u00a0 They bounced back from an early embarrassing loss to make it into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2013_BBVA_Compass_Bowl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBVA Compass Bowl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where they lost to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_Pittsburgh_Panthers_football_team\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ole Miss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 38-17.\u00a0 The Panthers finished fifth in the Big East\u2019s last season as a conference.\u00a0 Their record that year against Big East teams was three and four.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State: Kurt Hess 13-23 154 yards, two touchdowns.\u00a0 Jamaine Cook 21 carries 84 yards.\u00a0 Andre Stubbs four receptions 61 yards and one touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitt: Tino Sunseri 19-30, 239 yards, one touchdown. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/322450221\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>\u00a0Ray Graham<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 14 carries for 71 yards.\u00a0 Mike Shanahan six receptions 54 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Eric Wolford era at Youngstown State from 2010 to 2014 was very up and down.\u00a0 They did have Kurt Hess, who was one of the best quarterbacks at YSU.
