{"id":28454,"date":"2020-02-10T21:43:10","date_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=28454"},"modified":"2020-02-10T21:43:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-11T02:43:10","slug":"ysu-hires-doug-phillips-as-head-coach-reed-enters-transfer-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/02\/10\/ysu-hires-doug-phillips-as-head-coach-reed-enters-transfer-portal\/","title":{"rendered":"YSU Hires Doug Phillips as Head Coach, Reed Enters Transfer Portal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn&#8217;t look like anyone saw this hire coming. <\/span><b>Bo Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced that he was resigning as the Head Coach of Youngstown State to become the defensive coordinator at LSU.\u00a0 After that, rumors started circulating that either <\/span><b>Carl Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mark Brungard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Akron Hoban coach <\/span><b>Tim Tyrell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or possibly, but not likely, <\/span><b>Bob Stoops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were going to get the job.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was just like <\/span><b>Andy Benard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting the Regional Manager job in season eight of the Office, which no one expected. 21WFMJ director Dana Balash reported that YSU was hiring Cincinnati Bearcats running back coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/releases\/phillips-named-football-coach\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Doug Phillips<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 YSU made the announcement official on its social media page several hours later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YSU Hires Doug Phillips as Head Coach<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the Cincinnati <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearcats<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished with a record of 11-3 and 7-1 in the American.\u00a0 They finished the season ranked 21st, just missing the top 20.\u00a0 Two of their losses were back to back against Memphis (last loss being in the AAC championship).\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4239083\/michael-warren-ii\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Michael Warren II<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished tied for 22nd in FBS rushing.\u00a0 Warren had 1,265 yards on 261 carries, averaging just under five yards per carry and 14 touchdowns. Warren II was tied for 16th.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bearcats dominated the Boston College Eagles in the TicketMaster Birmingham Bowl, with Phillips&#8217; running back Warren rushing over 100 yards.\u00a0 His other running back, freshman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4360075\/ryan-montgomery\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ryan Montgomery<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, had seven carries for 47 yards and a touchdown in the 38-6 win.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cincinnati will have to replace Phillips and find a guy to build off of what he did last season. He was also the tight ends and special teams coach in 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Phillips&#8217; Past Assignments<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU and <\/span>Doug Phillips<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have familiarity with each other. Phillips has experience in the Mahoning and Trumbell county areas.\u00a0 He previously coached for the Penguins as a graduate assistant in 1991 and 1992 under now president <\/span><b>Jim Tressel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was also on the 2006 Ohio State staff with Tressel and <\/span><b>Luke Fickell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 That team went 12-0 in the regular season before losing to the Florida Gators in the National Championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before his one year coaching as a Buckeye, Phillips was the head coach for the Springfield Tigers (1997-2000) and the Salem Quakers (2001-2005), turning around both struggling programs.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He coached 15 years at the high school level.\u00a0 Finally, Phillips finished his last two years at Salem (2004-2005) with a record of 13-7.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Ohio State, Phillips joined the Bowling Green Falcons staff in 2007 as a recruiting coordinator.\u00a0 He then was superintendent at West Branch in 2015.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillips contacted 21 sports director <strong>Dana Balash<\/strong> Friday morning.\u00a0 He said that he is excited to get ready to be back in the Valley and serve as head coach.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, Phillips will look to bring back hardcore winning football to the campus of Youngstown State.\u00a0 However, the challenge can honestly be tougher than playing in the AAC. Apart from this, Phillips will also have to find another star defensive end for the 2020 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justus Reed Enters Transfer Portal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A week after Pelini announced he was leaving, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2018-19\/bios\/reed_justus_swjx\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justus Reed<\/a><\/strong> followed up with a statement on Twitter thanking the Penguin program, but that he would enter the Transfer Portal for the 2020 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reed has already transferred one time.\u00a0 In 2017, he was with the Florida Gators under head coaches <\/span><b>Will Muschamp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Jim McElwain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 He saw limited action from 2014-2016, but still had his share of tackles and quarterback hurries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his three seasons at Youngstown State,<\/span> Reed<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished with 58 total tackles, 17.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.\u00a0 In 2019, he tied the Missouri Valley with 13 sacks. This was a big comeback season after being out for the whole 2018 season with injuries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sports Illustrated and Saturday Down South report two schools that are trying to recruit Reed.\u00a0 The first is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Virginia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tech<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Reed stated in the article that he has not visited any schools yet, but that they were in contact with each other.\u00a0 The next college is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSU<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and this is no shocker.\u00a0 Reed can get a starting position under coach <strong>Ed Orgeron<\/strong> and Pelini\u2019s new 4-3 defense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini and Reed have known each other for three years, so having someone with SEC experience and experience at playing in arguably the toughest FCS conference can be beneficial to LSU.\u00a0 There have not been any other reports on who else can be interested in Reed. A Bo, <\/span><b>Donald D\u2019Alesio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Reed reunion would be great.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking Ahead\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new decade means a new change in scenery.\u00a0 This is what YSU needed heading into the 2020 season.\u00a0 After the 2019 season, fans wanted Pelini gone, but most thought he would stay because of the contract.\u00a0 Now, the Penguins and Phillips are getting ready for the spring game. Then, once August hits, its go time.\u00a0 For Pelini, we will see what the 4-3 defense does with this LSU program that is dramatically different than when he was last there.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see if these two Youngstown Boys can win championships.
