{"id":28286,"date":"2020-01-28T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2020-01-28T14:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=28286"},"modified":"2020-02-16T16:13:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-16T21:13:20","slug":"bo-pelini-hired-as-lsus-next-defensive-coordinator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2020\/01\/28\/bo-pelini-hired-as-lsus-next-defensive-coordinator\/","title":{"rendered":"Bo Pelini Hired as LSU\u2019s Next Defensive Coordinator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of 2014, Youngstown State was in need of a new head coach after moving on from Youngstown boy <strong>Eric Wolford<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They would eventually replace Wolford with another Youngstown boy.\u00a0 That man being <\/span><b>Bo Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who had just been fired a few weeks ago from Nebraska.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His first season at YSU was a slow start as the team finished with a disappointing 5-6 record.\u00a0 This included close losses to teams like North Dakota State, Pitt, Illinois State, Indiana State, and Southern Illinois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the Penguins regressed, there was promise as five of those games they only lost by three or more. And, heading into 2016 was the year where the team would finally make it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is exactly what happened.\u00a0 Youngstown State finished 12-4, the first double-digit winning season since 2006, and made it to the FCS Championship with Pelini leading.\u00a0 They did lose to James Madison 38-24 but promise was ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two players from that team were selected in that 2017 NFL Draft.\u00a0 One was defensive end <\/span><b>Derek Rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the New England Patriots and the other was <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/avery-moss-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Avery Moss<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the New York Giants.\u00a0 The program did not have a draft pick since 1998.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the last three seasons were plagued by injuries and a tougher schedule, with the total record being 17-18 from 2017 to 2019.\u00a0 Everyone thought Bo Pelini would stay, but after the LSU National Championship, there was uncertainty.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Breaking News<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, January 27th, 2020, it was reported that Pelini would resign as the head coach of the Youngstown State Penguins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Youngstown Cardinal Mooney graduate finished his five years at YSU with a record of 33-28.\u00a0 He also has a career record of 100-55 from his years coaching Nebraska football.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini is now going back to be the defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers, under now National Champion head coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/ed-orgeron-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ed Orgeron<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tigers recently lost their former defensive coordinator <strong>David Aranda<\/strong> who took the head coaching job at Baylor, following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/matt-rhule-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Matt Rhule<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resignation in order to be the Carolina Panthers next head coach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, LSU will have coach O and coach Bo, both looking for another National Title.\u00a0 Pelini in his return to Louisiana, and Orgeron, now without future first-round pick <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/joe-burrow-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Burrow<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini\u2019s First sting at LSU\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini got the job as defensive coordinator for the Tigers in 2005. \u00a0Before that, he was a co-defensive coordinator for Oklahoma. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The success continued on as Pelini had a top-three nationally ranked defense with his three years at LSU.\u00a0 The Tigers bounced back from losses to Kentucky and Arkansas to advance to the SEC Championship game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini&#8217;s defense picked off Volunteers quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/erik-ainge-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Erik Ainge<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice during the game and the Tigers won 21-14, advancing to the BCS National Championship where they would play<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/jim-tressel-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jim Tressel\u2019s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ohio State Buckeyes, his former college.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LSU defense picked off former Buckeye quarterback <\/span><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/todd-boeckman-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Boeckman<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice.\u00a0 The Tigers would win 38-24.\u00a0 Bo would leave for Nebraska after the Championship and finished with a record of 67-27 from 2008-2014.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSU fans will be even more hyped up if they hear Bo shout \u201cGeaux Tigers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statement from YSU\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive Director of Athletics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2020-21\/releases\/bo-pelini-to-lsu\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ron Strollo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to ysusports.com said that the national search will begin immediately.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strollo followed after by saying that he thanks Coach Pelini for the passion he brought on the field and returning to Youngstown for the last five seasons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We wish Bo and his family the best of luck in their future and that YSU football is very special to them.&#8221;\u00a0 Strollo continued saying how they will work their hearts out to find someone who built on top of what Bo brought to the Penguin Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbn.com\/sports\/watch-ysu-president-jim-tressel-discusses-bo-pelini-leaving-as-head-football-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jim Tressel<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told WKBN27 \u201cI think he felt like it was the thing to do, and he didn\u2019t short us one bit.\u00a0 I really believe as he does that he left us possessioned that he left us with a group of great kids to have a great future.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tressel continued about the next coach.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve always wanted someone who had the love for the institution, a love for the region, take care of the kids, hold them to high expectations, and academics being an all-time high, athletic department all-time high and we want to win.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini stated on the website that he cannot thank President Tressel and Athletic Director Ron Strollo enough and that he will still check in on YSU football.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sports Illustrated is reporting that Pelini&#8217;s deal with LSU is worth $2.3 million per year.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who will replace Bo Pelini?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There can be a few coaches in the mix of things for the Penguins.\u00a0 One of them being Bo\u2019s brother Carl.\u00a0<\/span><b>\u00a0Carl Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has experience as a head coach.\u00a0 Back in 2012-2013, he coached the Florida Atlantic Owls.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, he was the interim head coach for the Bowling Green Falcons, before returning to YSU last season as defensive coordinator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One big prediction but not likely to happen is <\/span><b>Bob Stoops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the XFL doesn\u2019t work out.\u00a0 That\u2019s only a prediction, not likely will happen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there is former Penguin quarterback <\/span><b>Mark Brungard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Brungard is a coach for the Springfield football team.\u00a0 His son <\/span>Beau<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the quarterback and is already being looked at by the Penguins.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Springfield finished the season 14-1 and their first appearance in the Division VI State Championship Game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is going to be an interesting search, we will soon see who will be the next head coach of the Youngstown State
