Championship Preview: North Dakota State vs James Madison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One team made it to the FCS championship game in 2018, beating Eastern Washington 38-24, while the other one was shocked by Colgate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans wondered what would happen with North Dakota State now that <\/span><b>Chris Klieman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was helping a Kansas State program turn around, and if <\/span><b>Matt Entz<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can continue the winning streak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same would be said for coach <\/span><b>Curt Cignetti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who would succeed as <\/span><b>Mike Houston<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> departed for East Carolina.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well as it turned out, both head coaches put these two teams back where they belonged, in the championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>FCS Championship Preview<\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both of these teams are known for their powerhouse offenses and defenses.\u00a0 Combined, they have a record of 29-1 in the 2019-2020 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new year cannot start off any better than the FCS National Championship game between the North Dakota State Bison and the James Madison Dukes, the matchup that some compared to Alabama vs Clemson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all the hype out of the way, it is time to preview both the offensive and defensive and sides of the ball.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota State Defense<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bison are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fcs\/current\/team\/22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> second in total defense.\u00a0 They have had 892 plays, 4048 yards and only given up 19 opponent touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Players to look out for are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/james-hendricks\/8444\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Hendricks<\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who has 65 total tackles and four interceptions, along with linebacker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/beau-pauly\/8472\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Beau Pauly <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with 14 total tackles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Key Defensive Players<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, the Bison&#8217;s biggest key player is linebacker <strong>Jabril Cox<\/strong>.\u00a0 Cox is a junior and might declare for the NFL Draft after the championship, with the deadline being January 20th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Buchanan\u2019s top prospects, Cox has great speed numbers but needs to improve on his consistency.\u00a0 If he does that, then he will likely be a fourth-round pick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Cox plays his best game, he may be moved up in the mock drafts, possibly an early second to the late first round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the secondary, two players to watch are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/marquise-bridges\/8424\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Marquis Bridges<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/josh-hayes\/8442\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Josh Hayes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/michael-tutsie\/8490\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Michael Tutsie<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Tutsie has 98 total tackles and seven interceptions on the year and looks to have a big game Saturday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is Tutsie smart with a sene to the ball on the field, but off of it, he is an Honor Roll student, putting his grades first.\u00a0 He is majoring in physical education with a minor in psychology. Tutsie ranks seventh in interceptions per game<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridges and Hayes meanwhile have had a good season themselves. \u00a0Marquise has two forced fumbles and 30 total tackles. Bridges reported to Kvrr that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kvrr.com\/2020\/01\/09\/how-ndsu-football-gets-ready-for-the-fcs-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practicing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the early mornings just like camp helped their physicality and mentality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Josh Hayes<\/strong> meanwhile has 52 total tackles and two interceptions, 11 pass deflections and two forced fumbles.\u00a0 Hayes came into the week questionable but is expected to play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some players who may get into the rotation are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/jack-darnell\/8433\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jack Darnell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/derrek-tuszka\/8489\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Derrek Tuszka<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 42 total tackles, five pass deflections, and a forced fumble. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense will try their best, but they may be overpowered by a strong James Madison offense that ranks ninth in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota State Offense<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><b>Easton Stick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> getting drafted, it was time to hand the ball over to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4383351\/trey-lance\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Trey Lance<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has not thrown an interception this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the year, Lance is 186\/277 with 2,714 yards and 28 touchdowns.\u00a0 For the running backs, it\u2019s senior <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/3930892\/ty-brooks\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ty Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has 940 rushing yards on 140 attempts and five touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fcs\/current\/team\/21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranks sixth with 7,159 yards and 75 touchdowns combined.\u00a0 Look for the passing game to be a strong point, but the James Madison defense can play a big role and maybe pressure Lance all day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other players to look out for are wide receiver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/christian-watson\/8494\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Watson <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(34 receptions 732 yards six touchdowns), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/phoenix-sproles\/8482\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Phoenix Sproles<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (32 receptions 528 yards and two touchdowns), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/jimmy-kepouros\/8459\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jimmy Kepouros<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (30 receptions 394 yards, plus scored two touchdowns). Sproles was questionable as he has been battling injuries, but it seems he will be healthy to play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the offensive line needs to block and cover-up as many gaps as possible.\u00a0 Their leader is right tackle <\/span><b>Zack Johnson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who is looking to lead this line and protect Lance against a tough Dukes defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Madison Defense\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the regular season, the James Madison defense only gave up 188 points all season long.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As said before, their only loss was by seven in the season opener against West Virginia. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fcs\/current\/team\/22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dukes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are first with 3970 yards\u00a0and 27 opponent touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dukes defense is led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmusports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/dimitri-holloway\/15616\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dimitri Holloway <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who has 115 total tackles, two sacks for 11 yards, five pass deflections, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jmusports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/rashad-robinson\/15650\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rashad Robinson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 47 total tackles, one and a half sacks, three interceptions, 14 pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last player to look out for if you are the Bison offense is defensive end <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jmusports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/ron-dell-carter\/15591\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ron\u2019Dell Carter<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 The Rutgers transfer as of now in 2019 has 59 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, one pass deflection, and a forced fumble.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch for James Madison to stop the run game through four quarters. Brooks is a very good running back, but this Dukes defense stops the run early, the Bisons are doomed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Madison Offense\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only do the Dukes have the strongest defense in college football, but their offense ranks in the top ten.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offense ranks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fcs\/current\/team\/21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ninth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overall with 7,087 and 74 offensive touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In two of the three playoff games, the offense put up 30 points or over.\u00a0 They would beat Monmouth in the second round 66-21, Northern Iowa 17-0, and Weber State\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30-14.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Madison&#8217;s offense is led by quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/3895785\/ben-dinucci\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ben Dinucci <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who has thrown for 3,237 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions.\u00a0 Dinucci also rushed for 560 yards on 114 carries and seven touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch for their running back too in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4249583\/percy-agyei-obese\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Percy Agyei-Obese<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 On the year, he has 1,143 yards on 241 attempts and 19 touchdowns.\u00a0 He ranks 16th in rushing yards in the FCS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dukes have one of the best receivers in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/3929652\/brandon-polk\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Brandon Polk<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who ranks ninth in receiving yards.\u00a0 Polk has 72 receptions, 1153 yards, and 11 touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another wide receiver who is one of the seniors is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jmusports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/riley-stapleton\/15659\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Riley Stapleton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 He ranks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fcs\/current\/individual\/455\/p2\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">96th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which may not seem good, and has had controversy in the past, but is a big asset to the team in many ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stapleton has 55 receptions for 688 yards and eight touchdowns.\u00a0 He was part of the reason why James Madison made it to the semi-finals back in 2017 too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Return<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Infourm, the Bison Notebook, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inforum.com\/bison-media-zone\/mens-sports\/football\/4857446-Bison-notebook-After-29-years-WDAYs-Dana-Mogck-back-covering-Bison-title-game\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Dana Mogck<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be announcing the championship game after 29 years.\u00a0 He was part of the announcers that stayed with the Bison when they were winning their division II championships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Game time for the FCS Championship Toyota Stadium is 12:00 PM Saturday on ABC.\u00a0 North Dakota State looks to win three and a row, while James Madison tries to win their third championship in program history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>FCS Championship Main Photo:<br \/>\n<a id=\"jl-94QQfRjtOX-0kxpfOJA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7;
