That is not always the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year&#8217;s game was not close as the Utah State Aggies took care of the North Texas Mean Green 52-10.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>New Mexico Bowl Preview; Central Michigan vs San Diego State<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this one should be a pretty good challenge between two good group of five teams that have had bounce back seasons.\u00a0 These teams are the San Diego State Aztecs (9-3, 5-3 Mountain West) and the Central Michigan Chippewas (8-5, 6-2 Mid American West).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego State is second in the Mountain West-West while Central Michigan is first in the Mid American West.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some will ask why this game has big implications. Well let\u2019s take a look at the key players and what both teams have done this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Michigan\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting with Central Michigan, they had a slow start to the season.\u00a0 They would only beat the Albany Great Danes by three touchdowns, and got crushed by Wisconsin Badgers 61-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chippewas bounced back with wins against Akron, Eastern Michigan, New Mexico State, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Toledo, and a one point victory against Ball State.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They, however, fell to Buffalo, Western Michigan, Miami, and Miami (OH).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite those losses, this season has been great for them, especially after winning just one game in 2018.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was all done by the coaching of <strong>Jim McElwain<\/strong> who had experience with the Florida Gators as he got them to a bowl in his first two seasons.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same with Colorado State where he had a slow start, but finished his next two seasons with records of 8-6 and 10-3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Key Players<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Michigan ranks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fbs\/current\/team\/21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in total offense, which is a big step up from finishing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/years\/2018-team-offense.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">128th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are led by senior quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game?gameId=401135263\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Quinten Dormady<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who ranks 76th in yardage having 2,148 yards and 14 touchdowns and six interceptions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His struggles have been in away games where he has thrown three touchdowns and five interceptions.\u00a0 Against non-conference opponents, he has five touchdowns and one interception.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dormady is a transfer from Tennessee.\u00a0 When he was with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/quinten-dormady-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volunteers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he had seven touchdowns and six interceptions.\u00a0 He then was apart of the Houston Cougars, before becoming a Chippewa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game?gameId=401135263\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jonathan Ward<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is having a good season running the ball.\u00a0 Ward ranks 36th having 1,082 yards on the ground and 15 touchdowns which is tied for 12th.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ward is a leader on this team and when he finds that open space, then its off to the races.\u00a0 He can put on a show with his moves too, either spinning, stiff arming a defender, or juking them out.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for Central Michigan to give the ball to him for a good portion of the game.\u00a0 If the offensive line does its job, then Jonathan Ward is going to have himself a day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Chippewas decide to pass, then Dormandy will have to throw to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4240866\/kalil-pimpleton\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kalil Pimpleton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Pimpleton is tied 66th with 823 yards and tied 15th with 79 receptions.\u00a0 He has six touchdowns on the season. He also rushed for 81 yards on seven attempts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look for Dormady to become an efficient passer if he finds his wide receivers open early on.\u00a0 If they are getting covered however, then you transfer over to the running game to wear them out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Michigan is looking for their first bowl victory since 2012 where they beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl 24-21.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego State Aztecs\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego State is looking to have a .500 record in bowl games.\u00a0 The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_San_Diego_State_Aztecs_bowl_games\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2010 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">era have provided many winning seasons, but they have lost five bowl games and only won four.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aztecs come into this game as three and a half favorites with an over\/under of 41 points.\u00a0 San Diego State is 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games according to CBSSports.com.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego State was ranked 24th in the AP Poll, bouncing back from an early loss against Utah State.\u00a0 That all came to an end when the Nevada Wolfpack defense stopped the Aztec offense. The final score would be 17-13 Nevada shocking the Mountain West.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego State bounced back with a win against Fresno State 17-7, but fell again to Hawaii 14-11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aztecs bounced back in the final game of the regular season beating BYU 13-3, getting them motivated for the New Mexico Bowl.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injury Concerns\/Keys to the Game<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some concern for quarterback<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/3921648\/ryan-agnew\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b> Ryan Agnew<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who sat out against BYU because of a calf injury.\u00a0 Agnew is expected to play however according to multiple websites, but no official word has been released by the team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agnew this season has thrown for 2,175 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.\u00a0 The team ranks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fbs\/current\/team\/21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">115th<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in total offense, but their defense is top <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/football\/fbs\/current\/team\/22\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the FBS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That defense is led by cornerback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/college-football\/new-mexico-bowl-prediction-picks-central-michigan-chippewas-vs-san-diego-state-aztecs-2019\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Luq Barcoo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who is tied second in the FBS with eight interceptions.\u00a0 He also has 16 pass break ups in the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only problem is that the Aztecs will turn to backup running backs <strong>Chance Bell<\/strong>, <strong>Chase Jasmin<\/strong>, <strong>Jordan Byrd<\/strong>, and <strong>Kaegun Williams<\/strong>.\u00a0 The reason is that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/sports\/aztecs\/story\/2019-12-09\/san-diego-state-aztecs-football-sdsu-ryan-agnew-juwan-washington-rocky-long-new-mexico-bowl-central-michigan\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Juwan Washington\u2019s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ankle is not one hundred percent.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington missed the first half of the season and later re injured that ankle in the 14-11 loss against the Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aztecs are led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/rocky-long-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Rocky Long<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has a record of 80-38 with San Diego State and has won three Mountain West titles in 2012, 2015 and 2016.\u00a0 The Aztecs are 3-5 in bowl games under Long.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two teams have never met in the modern college football era.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is going to be an entertaining battle, and if Central Michigan\u2019s powerful running game can get past the fifth best defense in the FBS, or if the Aztecs are going to take control early and not look back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kickoff for the 13th New Mexico Bowl is Saturday December 21st at 2pm eastern on ESPN.\u00a0 The winner will get the New Mexico Bowl trophy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Mexico Bowl has put together a good match-up for 2019.
