They did just with 21-3 win as YSU upsets Illinois State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins, who where coming off of their third straight loss, hosted the 8-3 Illinois State Redbirds who were fighting for a playoff position.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YSU Upsets Illinois State<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first possession was rough as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joe Craycraft<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was picked off by Cardinals linebacker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ty Deforest<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Penguins Tough Defense<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Penguins came to play defense. On Illinois State second possession, quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jack Baltz <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be picked off by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Terray Bryant.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Both teams would still remain scoreless as neither could mount a sustained drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State got on the board a possession later led by Redshirt Freshman quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mark Waid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Braxton Chapman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Both of their running games worked and Chapman finished the 12 play drive with a six yard touchdown making it 7-0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois State got the ball back, but the defense led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Justus Reed<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stopped <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Robinson <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the backfield giving the penguins another shot to score.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the talented freshman Waid made a rookie mistake as he threw the ball right into Redbirds linebacker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>DeMarco Washington\u2019s<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hands.\u00a0 Illinois State&#8217;s offense went down the field, all the way to the five, but were held to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Sam Fenalson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> field goal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Redbirds defense seemed to have stopped the Penguins offense from getting the first down.\u00a0 That is until Craycraft found wide receiver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ryan Emans <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on a fourth and six.\u00a0 Emans would gain eight yards for the first down.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few plays later, Youngstown State was in striking range to make it a two possession game thanks to a pass interference penalty.\u00a0 Craycraft rushed it himself for a one yard touchdown making it 14-3 going into halftime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seemed as if the Youngstown State players and coaches were trusting each other more.\u00a0 Not only that, but they were playing for these seniors, especially quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nathan Mays <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who got hurt during the game against North Dakota State, and had a few injuries before hand too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Second Half<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Penguins failed to convert on fourth down, Illinois state looked to get some momentum going. \u00a0Baltz was sacked by Reed once again in this game. Reed finished with six tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense got another turnover as Baltz was picked off by Zaire Jones who took it 30 yards to the house. This would make the score 21-3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Redbirds tried to make something happen late in the game, but the strong penguins defense stopped them securing the 21-3 victory.\u00a0 There was also a special moment as Nathan Mays came onto the field for one last kneel down with his teammates as they helped him on and off the field.\u00a0 Mays would be named Co-offensive player of the week for the Youngstown State football team.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Offensively, Youngstown State was up and down with their quarterback play. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>\u00a0Joe Craycraft <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished six of ten with 61 passing yards, and an interception.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Mark Waid<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished two of five with 21 yards and one pick.\u00a0 Waid rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries. Craycraft 10 yards on six carries and one rushing touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/mays_nathan_vc8k\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Nathan Mays<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the final kneel down, and finishes his Youngstown State football career with 2,619 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions.\u00a0 Mays rushed for 990 yards and 10 touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his final game as a penguin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/alessi_joe_pdyo\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joe Alessi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries.\u00a0 Alessi finishes his career at YSU with 1,355 yards on 179 carries and 12 touchdowns.\u00a0 He also finishes with 118 yards on 11 receptions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/chapman_braxton_4nc4\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Braxton Chapman<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rushed for one touchdown early on, and had 18 yards on eight carries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Ryan Emans<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had four receptions for 46 yards.\u00a0 His longest went for 17 yards. Tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Miles Joiner<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished with two receptions for 25 yards.\u00a0 Running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Turner<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had two receptions for 14 yards after he struggled in the run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois State Stats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois State had their worst game of the season passing wise.\u00a0 Jack Baltz finished the game only completing one pass for seven yards.\u00a0 He also threw two interceptions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Bryce Jefferson <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also got playing time, but two of seven with 23 yards and one interception.\u00a0 Jefferson rushed for 22 yards on six carries during the game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>James Robinson<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had 22 carries and rushed for 82 yards with his longest being a 13 yard gain.\u00a0 The other running back in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127267\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kevin Brown<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had two carries for eight yards.\u00a0 Robinson was also their highest receiver with one reception for 15 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aftermath And Looking Towards The Future\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Illinois State had their worst game on offense and struggled a bit on defense, they were still able to make it into the FCS playoffs with a record of eight and four.\u00a0 The Redbirds will play the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in the first round of the playoffs. Kickoff is 2pm on ESPN3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (6-6) ends their season with a .500 record.\u00a0 This is head coach Bo Pelini\u2019s 100th career win, and his 33rd in five years at YSU.\u00a0 The team is looking forward to 2020, and to take on an old rival to start off the season in the Akron Zips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribtoday.com\/sports\/ysu-sports\/2019\/11\/ysu-ends-tough-year-with-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Pelini<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told the Tribune Chronicle that the season was frustrating but that he was not worried and that fixing the program will come at another time.\u00a0 For now he said, let\u2019s enjoy the win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>YSU Upsets Illinois State Photo: File photo.
