{"id":26004,"date":"2019-11-18T17:00:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-18T22:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=26004"},"modified":"2025-09-13T15:28:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T19:28:58","slug":"oklahoma-vs-baylor-retrospective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2019\/11\/18\/oklahoma-vs-baylor-retrospective\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma vs Baylor Retrospective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Looking at the Oklahoma vs Baylor Retrospective, these teams engaged in an epic contest Saturday night in Waco, Texas.\u00a0 Saturday\u2019s game was a tale of two halves.\u00a0 Baylor looked every bit like a CFB playoff contender in the first half.\u00a0 Oklahoma was totally dominant and virtually unbeatable in the final two quarters.\u00a0 With this in mind, this is a retrospective of this battle for conference supremacy.<\/p>\n<h2>Oklahoma vs Baylor Retrospect<\/h2>\n<h3>Baylor<\/h3>\n<p>In the first half, many experts were talking about how high Baylor would climb in the CFB playoff rankings. Baylor did everything right in the first two quarters.\u00a0 The Bears built a 25-point lead with under six minutes to go in the second quarter.\u00a0 Baylor quarterback <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/charlie-brewer-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlie Brewer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was virtually flawless.\u00a0 Brewer passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more while guiding Baylor to the 25-point lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in the first half.\u00a0 The Sooners lost one fumble and threw one interception in the first half contributing to 14 Baylor points.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, a different Oklahoma came out and dominated them in the second half.\u00a0 Although this is a heartbreaking loss, the Baylor coaching staff needs to make sure its only one loss.\u00a0 Baylor needs to get ready for the next opponent when Texas comes to Waco next Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<h3>Oklahoma<\/h3>\n<p>The Sooners appeared to be without a pulse the first half Saturday. The offense seemed to be sleepwalking.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jalen-hurts-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Hurts<\/a> <\/strong>turned the ball over three times in the game.\u00a0 Hurts committed two fumbles and threw an interception.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the defense looked like the one everyone has seen for two and a half games of late.<\/p>\n<h4>Offense<\/h4>\n<p>A totally different Oklahoma team came out the second half.\u00a0 The Sooners never punted the ball the second half.\u00a0 The only possession in which Oklahoma didn\u2019t score in the second half was when Hurts fumbled the ball at the Baylor one-yard line.\u00a0 Despite his first-half struggles, Hurts show a lot of character with a near-flawless second-half performance.\u00a0 The offensive line took control of the line of scrimmage in the second half and the Sooners were unstoppable.<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma was without top receiver <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ceedee-lamb-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CeeDee Lamb<\/a>, <\/strong>out with an apparent head injury.\u00a0 The Sooners young receiving corps showed why they were the top-ranked incoming freshmen group in the country.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/austin-stogner-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Stogner<\/a><\/strong>, the number one tight end recruit in the country contributed a pair of touchdown receptions.\u00a0 Freshman wideout <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/theo-wease-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Theo Wease<\/a> <\/strong>added two clutch catches and a touchdown.\u00a0 Fellow freshman <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jadon-haselwood-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jadon Haselwood<\/a> <\/strong>also had a big third-down reception.<\/p>\n<h3>Defense<\/h3>\n<p>The Sooner defense showed they can be a dominant unit.\u00a0 The defense held Baylor to 81 yards and three first downs of total offense the second half.\u00a0 The Bears could only manage one first down while Oklahoma was storming back to tie the game at 31-31 with 5:25 remaining.\u00a0 \u00a0Baylor could only manage 45 yards of total offense before Oklahoma took the lead with 2:30 to go in the game.\u00a0 The Sooner defense was finally able to force two turnovers.\u00a0 The second turnover sealed the game with a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nik-bonitto-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nik Bonitto<\/a> <\/strong>interception at the Oklahoma 38 with 29 seconds remaining.<\/p>\n<p>The second-half performance by the defense was the most dominant since Oklahoma defeated Florida State to win the national championship in 2000.<\/p>\n<h3>The Final Word<\/h3>\n<p>In conclusion, Oklahoma proved they can play championship-caliber football at least for a half.\u00a0 The Sooners set a record for the largest comeback victory in school history. \u00a0It remains to be seen if this level of play will continue going forward.\u00a0 Everyone has seen Oklahoma play championship level offense.\u00a0 Saturday night everyone witnessed this team play stifling, shut down defense.\u00a0 This only shows how good this team can be when they play with effort, character, and most of all heart.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"Y1CFSSQgQE9SgPTxfzhOBQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7;
