YSU went to the Dakota Dome to take on the South Dakota Coyotes this weekend. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, instead of winning their sixth game of the season, YSU falls to South Dakota. The Coyotes lost to the now one win Western Illinois Leathernecks last week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YSU Falls to South Dakota<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Points of the Game<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State deferred the opening kickoff and hoped that the defense would make a quick stop. However, South Dakota went 75 yards on seven plays, finishing the drive when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Austin Simmons<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found tight end <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Connor Herrmann<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 13-yard touchdown making it 7-0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins stalled on their first possession, giving the ball back to the Coyotes and Simmons. Simmons found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Carter Bell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this time for a 15-yard touchdown making it 14-0. A possible upset alert was triggered.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>YSU First Touchdown, Struggles<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU scored on their next possession. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Joe Craycraft <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jermiah Braswell <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a 53-yard touchdown making it 14-7. Now it seemed as if momentum was on the Penguins side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That momentum would fall apart on the next two possessions. South Dakota scored twice.\u00a0 The first was at the end of the first quarter when Austin Simmons did a quarterback draw taking it in for a 10-yard touchdown. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second touchdown was led by Simmons who found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Caleb Vander Esch<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a 57-yard pass completion.\u00a0 Two possessions later, <\/span><b>Travis Theis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took it in five yards with the score being 28-7 in the second quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins scored once more before halftime.\u00a0 It looked like it was going to be another four and out, but a couple of penalties helped the Penguins drive down the field.\u00a0 The drive ended when Craycraft found Braswell once again for a nine-yard touchdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense stopped South Dakota on their next possession led by <\/span><b>Ma\u2019lik Richmond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who sacked Simmons which led to a three and out a few plays later.\u00a0 YSU was down by two touchdowns. This hopefully would get them kickstarted again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was not the case as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4249764\/kai-henry\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kai Henry <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rushed it in for a two-yard touchdown making it 35-14 at the half.\u00a0 The second half was just a continuation of the first half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Half Struggles<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota\u2019s next touchdown was led by backup running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Canaan Brooks<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who took it in from 14 yards out. He had a total of 57 rushing yards during that possession.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simmons and Henry led their team to the endzone two more times.\u00a0 The second score of the fourth quarter was a Henry one-yard touchdown, while the last touchdown for them was a Brooks one-yard touchdown run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Penguins scored one final time.\u00a0 The drive started when running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>London Pearson <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rushed for a 19-yard pickup. Then, a pass interference penalty helped YSU get into the red zone. This was something they had not seen all day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few possessions later it was followed with Craycraft finding the other running back <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Braxton Chapman <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rushing it in for a one-yard touchdown.\u00a0 In the end, YSU falls to South Dakota 56-21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing to look at during this game for the Penguins was the rotations of all four running backs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Chapman<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led the way for the rushing game with 13 carries for 43 yards while scoring on a passing touchdown.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Christian Turner<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> got more playing time. He carried the ball six times for 30 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pearson<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had five carries for 19 yards. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>\u00a0Joe Alessi<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who started the game only had four carries for six yards.\u00a0 Alessi played at the beginning of the first, but was mostly absent until the second and then didn\u2019t play after that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports early on in the broadcast suggested that the reason Alessi did not play was because of shoulder pain during the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Craycraft<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is now the starting quarterback finished 18 of 30 for 246 yards and three touchdowns.\u00a0 He was the only quarterback playing. There were no other rotations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Braswell had two receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Kendric Mallory <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was targeted a lot but only finished with four receptions for 49 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Samuel St. Surin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had three receptions for 32 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jake Coates<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had two receptions for 41 yards.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127291\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Zack Torbert<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made one reception for 43 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota came into this game ranked 104th in total defense but played like they were ranked in the top ten.\u00a0 They held the Penguins to 312 total yards. In addition, they forced a turnover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offense ranked 16th coming into today\u2019s game and showed why they are in the top 20. <\/span>Simmons<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finished 13-21 with 180 yards and four touchdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running backs <\/span>Henry<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span>Brooks<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combined for 242 rushing yards. Henry had 13 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
