{"id":25549,"date":"2019-11-04T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=25549"},"modified":"2019-11-04T09:26:18","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T14:26:18","slug":"north-dakota-state-too-much-for-the-penguins-beats-ysu-56-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2019\/11\/04\/north-dakota-state-too-much-for-the-penguins-beats-ysu-56-17\/","title":{"rendered":"North Dakota State Too Much for the Penguins, Beats YSU 56-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State showed promise after the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2019\/11\/01\/youngstown-state-vs-north-dakota-state-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">59-14 win last week<\/a> against Western Illinois and was looking to upset the number one North Dakota State Bison this past Saturday.\u00a0 The opposite of that happened as the Penguins struggled to move the ball throughout the game, and the defense could not stop the NDSU pass and run game.\u00a0 The Bison beat the Penguins 56-17.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Bison Beat the Penguins 56-17<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State came out strong on defense as they forced North Dakota State to punt.\u00a0 However, punt returner<strong> Jake Coates<\/strong> would muff the punt and <\/span><b>Ross Kennelly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would recover it for the Bison.\u00a0 Quarterback <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/trey-lance\/8462\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Trey Lance<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then took it in himself making the score 7-0 early.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bison scored on their next offensive possession after they held the Penguins to a four and out.\u00a0 It started as a positive for YSU as NDSU almost lost the ball on the punt as <\/span><b>Christiaan Randall-Posey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forced the fumble, but the Bison fell on it.\u00a0 That then led to a Lance play-action pass finding wide receiver <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gobison.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/christian-watson\/8494\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Christian Watson<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as he beat Penguins defensive back, <strong>Melvin Jackson<\/strong>, making it 14-0.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State had another obstacle to deal with.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/mays_nathan_vc8k\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Nathan Mays<\/strong><\/a> gained three yards but went down with another leg injury, the same one that has been hurting since the Northern Iowa game.\u00a0 Mays was carted off and according to the YSU <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thejambarsports\/status\/1190758965036146689?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jambar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is a broken left ankle. Mays would come back in the fourth quarter watching from the sidelines on crutches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bison scored one more time before the end of the first quarter.\u00a0 Lance found <\/span><b>Phoenix Sproles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 19 yards, and then found <strong>Josh Babicz<\/strong> for a six-yard touchdown just getting the feet in.\u00a0 This would make it 21-0 and the second did not change for the Penguins.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Woes Continued for the Penguins<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota State scored within five minutes in the second when Lance found <\/span><b>Babicz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a six-yard touchdown.\u00a0 They would then have great field position after a <\/span><strong>Nick DeSalvo<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shank of a 10-yard punt, and <\/span><strong>Dimitri Williams<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would take it in four yards making the score 28-0.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State would finally reach the endzone in the second as <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/craycraft_joe_du59\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Craycraft<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found <\/span><b>Miles Joiner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 23 yards for a touchdown, but at that point, there was no hope for a comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bison would put the nail in the coffin just before halftime as <\/span><strong>Kobe Johnson<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returned the kick 94 yards for a touchdown.\u00a0 The Bison went into the half with a lead of 42-7.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State would score a field goal and one more touchdown in the final half.\u00a0 Their only second-half touchdown was when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ysusports.com\/sports\/fball\/2019-20\/bios\/waid_mark_m7zy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mark Waid <\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rushed it in himself for a 27-yard touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota State scored two more times during the second half.\u00a0 The first score was a Johnson 75-yard touchdown run, and then a 30-yard touchdown run by Williams.\u00a0 In the end, the North Dakota State Bison beat the Penguins 56-17.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota State had a total of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">447<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yards on offense while the Penguins had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">278<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yards.\u00a0 Lance finished seven of nine for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Craycraft finished five-of-ten for 44 yards and a touchdown. Waid was five-of-ten for 51 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Post Game Reactions<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per the Youngstown State youtube channel, head coach <\/span><b>Bo Pelini<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said that \u201c You don\u2019t start like that, but we got our [butt] kicked in all three phases of the game, they were a lot better football team than us.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t do anything well.\u201d He also spoke on how all he can do is give credit to North Dakota State.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked about May\u2019s injury, Pelini said that \u201cNate\u2019s dislocated right above his ankle.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty nasty, then they had to reset the thing and he was in pretty serious pain, it\u2019s too bad.\u201d\u00a0 He can deal with the pain, he is pretty sad, his career is over. He\u2019s done, so I feel for him, he was a great competitor, it\u2019s a tough one to swallow.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarterback Waid said during his press conference that \u201cI\u2019m going to practice and the coaches will make that decision and that I can control what I can control, and just work as hard as I can.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More Stats\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waid was the highest rusher on the Penguins team Saturday.\u00a0 He finished with eight for 79 yards and a touchdown. <\/span><b>Joe Alessi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggled to get anything going against the Bison defense.\u00a0 Alessi finished with eight carries for 34 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joiner had three receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown. <\/span><strong>Ryan Emans<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had two receptions for 18 yards.\u00a0 Every other receiver only had one reception for YSU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Youngstown State defense was led by <\/span><b>Zaire Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Randall-Posey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each finishing with six tackles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson for the Bison finished with six carries for 103 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0 Williams finished with six carries for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
