{"id":25352,"date":"2019-10-26T16:56:37","date_gmt":"2019-10-26T20:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=25352"},"modified":"2025-09-13T16:15:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T20:15:47","slug":"oklahoma-vs-kansas-state-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2019\/10\/26\/oklahoma-vs-kansas-state-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma vs Kansas State Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a shocking Saturday in many respects, here is our Oklahoma vs Kansas State review.\u00a0 Oklahoma traveled to Manhattan, Kansas, but the defense didn\u2019t make the trip.\u00a0 Kansas State came in boasting a very mediocre offense.\u00a0 The Sooners defense, or lack of it, made them look all world.\u00a0 The Wildcats scored on seven consecutive possessions.\u00a0 Clearly, the Sooners defense quit after the first quarter on this Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, here is the recap of Oklahoma vs Kansas State.<\/p>\n<h2>Oklahoma vs Kansas State Review<\/h2>\n<h3>Kansas State<\/h3>\n<p>The Wildcats didn\u2019t come into the game with a bag full of gadget plays.\u00a0 Kansas State simply ran the same basic offense they have all year, with limited success previously.\u00a0 The Sooners defense simply didn\u2019t have an answer.\u00a0 Kansas State couldn\u2019t be stopped, especially on third or fourth and long.<\/p>\n<p>At one point the game announcer stated Kansas State ran into the heart of the Oklahoma defense.\u00a0 That seems very unlikely as the Oklahoma defense had no heart on this day.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the Wildcats were the only unit with any heart today.<\/p>\n<h3>Oklahoma<\/h3>\n<p>This was an embarrassing performance by Oklahoma.\u00a0 The defense of the Sooners looked as bad as it has looked at any point in the last three years.\u00a0 The final score of 48-41 was not indicative of how one-sided this game was.\u00a0 The Wildcats took control of this game late in the second quarter.\u00a0 The Sooners were down 25 points with under 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter.\u00a0 The Oklahoma defense clearly quit at halftime.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s back to square one for Oklahoma defensive coordinator <strong>Alex Grinch<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Sooners defense did absolutely nothing well all game.\u00a0 The offensive statistics for Kansas State bears that out.\u00a0 The defense looked as if they couldn\u2019t care less about playing this game.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, the Oklahoma defense the first half of the season was all smoke and mirrors.<\/p>\n<h3>Positives<\/h3>\n<p>There certainly wasn\u2019t much to take away from this game on the positive side.\u00a0 Oklahoma placekicker <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/gabe-brkic-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabe Brkic<\/a><\/strong> had a great game, hitting field goals of 25, 39, 44, and 50 yards.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jalen-hurts-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Hurts<\/a> <\/strong>had another Heisman like performance completing 19-26 for 395 yards, he also ran for another 96 yards.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ceedee-lamb-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CeeDee Lamb<\/a> <\/strong>had five receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>On the defensive side of the ball, there were absolutely no positives from this game.\u00a0 The Sooners defensive clearly did nothing well.\u00a0 They looked confused in pass coverage.\u00a0 The defense did an extremely poor job of tackling.\u00a0 The defense did not fly to the ball as in previous good performances this year.\u00a0 Most importantly, there was a definite lack of effort by the defense.<\/p>\n<h3>Ramifications<\/h3>\n<p>There are many ramifications from this debacle.\u00a0 Oklahoma has virtually no chance to get into the College Football Playoffs.\u00a0 With that being said, anyone watching the game could see this team doesn\u2019t deserve to be in the playoffs.\u00a0 Regardless of the positive numbers, he generated this loss will decrease Hurts chances to win the Heisman Trophy.
