{"id":24868,"date":"2019-10-15T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T12:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=24868"},"modified":"2019-10-18T11:16:50","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T15:16:50","slug":"ysu-0-2-in-conference-play-losing-to-south-dakota-state-38-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2019\/10\/15\/ysu-0-2-in-conference-play-losing-to-south-dakota-state-38-28\/","title":{"rendered":"YSU 0-2 in Conference Play Losing to South Dakota State 38-28"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Penguins Blow Lead Against Jackrabbits<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, one loss in conference play is not always a bad thing, two losses, however, especially when you are up at halftime can sense disaster.\u00a0 That is what <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2019\/10\/15\/ysu-0-2-in-conference-play-losing-to-south-dakota-state-38-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YSU<\/a> fans are the most worried about as the Penguins blow the lead against Jackrabbits from South Dakota State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest story coming into this game was not how the Penguins can bounce back from a tough 21-14 loss last week. It also wasn&#8217;t getting their revenge on the Jackrabbits who ended up beating them 36-7 at Dana J. Dykhouse last season.\u00a0 Instead, it was if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/nathan-mays-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nathan Mays<\/strong><\/a> would play after suffering a leg injury at the end of the Northern Iowa game.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Breakdown of the 38-28 Loss<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota State got on the board first thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/chase-vinatieri-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chase Vinatieri<\/strong><\/a> field goal. That didn&#8217;t last though as Mays, who would start, used his legs and took it in 28 yards out making the score 7-3.\u00a0 Mays would then take it in himself in the second quarter making it 14-3 at the half. There was arguably a call missed during the first half. A potential holding penalty should have been called as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/kendric-mallory-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kendric Mallory<\/strong><\/a> was being held as the ball sailed over his head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State got off to a slow start in the third as Mays would force a ball which was then picked off by Jackrabbits cornerback <strong>Don Gardner<\/strong>. Gardner took it 42 yards for a touchdown.\u00a0 South Dakota State tried to make it a three-point game but missed the two-point conversion making it 14-9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU came back from their slow start and Mays found running back<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/joe-alessi-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/joe-alessi-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joe Alessi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with a quick swing route.\u00a0 Alessi took it 45 yards for a touchdown making the score 21-9. By all accounts, the Penguins put the game away.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that would be the last time YSU saw momentum on their side. Penalties and big plays by South Dakota State had the Penguins fall off a cliff.\u00a0 There is a quote according to the Tribune Chronicle, where senior linebacker <strong>Cash Mitchell<\/strong> said: \u201cIt affected us big.&#8221; He further stated that they were tired out. It seemed as though right when the defense was going to get off the field a penalty kept them on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Penalties Hurt the Penguins<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was another flag on third-and-goal from the nine. Holding was called on cornerback <strong>Zaire Jones<\/strong>.\u00a0 The replay showed different as the receiver fell without contact from Jones. This lead to a quarterback run by <strong>J\u2019Brone Gibbs<\/strong>. Effectively cutting the YSU lead to only four points with the score being 21-16 Penguins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU had a drive going, but center <strong>Matt Jones <\/strong>was called for unsportsmanlike conduct which drove the Penguins back, forcing a punt a few plays later.\u00a0 Also, according to the Tribune Chronicle, head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/coaches\/bo-pelini-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bo Pelini<\/a><\/strong> said that a championship team doesn\u2019t make selfish plays like that. Further, how the team is getting in their own way. Pelini was very honest about the state of his team in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aMYOsxCXJfM&amp;fbclid=IwAR2H2vdrRc1LuBRyFWTBkYQ82XRy5XGynwikrJfesBrXTvA3Tif4WxesGgA&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-game press conference<\/a> posted by the Youngstown State Penguins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelini further told the Tribune Chronicle that \u201cyou can\u2019t be front runners, when things are going good you play good, but when you face adversity, you gotta man up.\u201d\u00a0 This was followed by him saying \u201cour tackling for a couple of those drives was horrendous.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota State quarterback Gibbs found wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cade-johnson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cade Johnson<\/strong><\/a> for an 81-yard touchdown pass, and then they did a Pitt Panther\/Philly Special where Johnson found <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/blake-kunz-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Kunz<\/a><\/strong> for the two-point conversion.\u00a0 South Dakota State finally put this game away with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cj-wilson-5.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>C.J. Wilson<\/strong><\/a> 13-yard run, and a Gibbs 63-yard touchdown run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mays went down with what seemed like the same leg injury as last week. Backup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/joe-craycraft-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joe Craycraft<\/strong><\/a> came in and found tight end <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/miles-joiner-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miles Joiner <\/a><\/strong>for a 17-yard touchdown pass. This was Youngstown State&#8217;s last touchdown of the night as they fell 38-28. In the end, the Penguins blow the lead to the Jackrabbits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Statistics for Both Teams<\/h3>\n<h4>Youngstown State<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mays ended up throwing for 176 yards on 14-24 completions, one touchdown, and two interceptions.\u00a0 He also rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries. Craycraft was 6-10 for 91 yards and a touchdown. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127296\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Waid<\/a><\/strong> had two carries for seven yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alessi had 17 carries for 72 yards rushing, while <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127296\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Turner<\/a><\/strong> saw a limited amount of time rushing. Turner only had five carries for eight yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joiner was the leading receiver with five receptions for 81 yards. <strong>Jermiah Braswell<\/strong> had four receptions for 53 yards. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/samuel-st-surin-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Samuel St. Surin<\/strong><\/a> had four receptions for 49 yards and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/ryan-emans-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Emans<\/a> <\/strong>finished with two receptions for 17 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>South Dakota State<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/boxscore?gameId=401127296\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J\u2019Brone Gibbs<\/a> was 14-26 passing with 210 yards and a touchdown. Gibbs rushed for 75 yards on two carries and two touchdowns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/pierre-strong-jr-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pierre Strong Jr.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>had eight carries for 61 yards, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/cj-wilson-5.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilson<\/a><\/strong> had 13 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson had three receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/adam-anderson-3.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Anderson<\/a><\/strong> also had three receptions but it was for 44 yards. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cfb\/players\/jaxon-janke-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaxon Janke <\/a><\/strong>has four receptions for 32 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up Next for YSU<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (4-2), will travel to Saluki Stadium in Carbondale, Illinois where they will take on the Southern Illinois Salukis (2-4).\u00a0 Kickoff is 3:00 pm ET either on ESPN Plus, or WBCB the Valley\u2019s CW.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Dakota State (5-1), will head to Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute, Indiana to take on the Indiana State Sycamores (3-3).\u00a0 Kickoff is 1:00 pm ET on ESPN3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"9AH5Toq_SwVVlf9C_NdlEA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7;
