{"id":24711,"date":"2019-10-10T07:00:08","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T11:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=24711"},"modified":"2019-10-18T11:31:26","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T15:31:26","slug":"ysu-falls-to-uni","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2019\/10\/10\/ysu-falls-to-uni\/","title":{"rendered":"YSU Falls To UNI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/2019\/07\/29\/five-ysu-players-to-watch-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youngstown State<\/a> has had a great season so far against the non-conference opponents.\u00a0 Saturday was, however, a challenge as the Penguins would head to Cedar Falls Iowa to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers at the UNI-Dome.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17th ranked Penguins never gave up and kept battling, but it was not enough as Northern Iowa had the advantage and won 21-14. They are now 1-0 in conference play while YSU falls to 0-1.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>YSU Falls To UNI<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first drive for both teams started slow but picked up in Northern Iowa\u2019s second drive when YSU defensive back <strong>Bryce Gibson<\/strong> was called for a pass interference penalty.\u00a0 Quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game?gameId=400951079\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will McElvain<\/a> would then find wide receiver Isaiah Weston for a 39-yard touchdown making it 7-0 Panthers with 2:03 left in the first quarter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Iowa had a nice drive by <strong>Tyler Hoosman<\/strong> which then led to a McElvain 42-yard pass to <strong>Jaylin James<\/strong> putting the Panthers in the RedZone.\u00a0 This was followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game?gameId=400951079\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Allens<\/a> run to the Penguins 14-yard line, and then a 10-yard touchdown putting UNI up 14-0 with 5:07 left in the second.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Mays<\/a> would find senior wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/playbyplay?gameId=401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jermiah Braswell<\/a> for a 75-yard touchdown to cut the lead to seven and giving YSU momentum on their side.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense was beaten on the last possession before halftime as UNI drove down the field and Hoosman took it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">15 yards out for a touchdown<\/a> making it 21-7 going into the half. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Second Half Chances<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a struggling first half, the Guins were looking for a second-half bounce back and it started out that way.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mays would find tight end Miles Joiner for a 15 yard gain, <strong>Joe Alessi<\/strong> would then rush it for 12 yards, and Mays would then find <strong>Ryan Emans<\/strong> for 20 yards and then two plays later, he would find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kendric Mallory<\/a> 14 yards out cutting it back to seven in the third.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU got the ball back after a three and out by Northern Iowa but was stopped by the Panthers defense.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colten McFadden<\/a> who was also celebrating his 21st birthday wasn\u2019t celebrating after his 44-yard miss and UNI would get the ball right back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Panthers punted away to the Penguins, but Northern Iowa defensive back <strong>Austin Evans<\/strong> sacked Mays causing a fumble which was recovered by defensive linemen <strong>Seth Thomas<\/strong> basically putting the game away after that.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Panthers bounced back from a 31-10 defeat against the Penguins at the Ice Castle last year, to a 21-14 victory at their own dome. Northern Iowa now leads the Penguins 23-9 in all-time series meetings between the two teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further note; Youngstown State has not won a game at the UNI-Dome since the 1999 season. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YSU STATS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Mays<\/a> ended up finishing 17\/23 on completions\/attempts, 239 yards passing and two touchdowns in the loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mays will likely be out after getting hurt and put on crunches at the end of the game. \u00a0That means it will either be sophomore Joe Craycraft, or Freshman Mark Waid. Either will likely be taking over the quarterback duties for a few weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At running back, it was Joe Alessi who had the highest rushing yards with 28 on eight carries.\u00a0 Following him was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christian Turner<\/a> who had nine carries for 15 yards.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jermiah<a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Braswell <\/a>was the receiver with the most yardage.\u00a0 He had two catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Emans<\/a> almost had a touchdown, but the ball went through his hands.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emans<\/a> still had four catches for 55 yards. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kendric Mallory<\/a> had three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Miles Joiner has two receptions for 19 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cash Mitchell<\/strong> would force a turnover and his teammate, defensive end <strong>Ma&#8217;lik Richmond<\/strong>, would recover it. YSU would, however, punt a few plays after.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Christian Turner<\/strong> has two kick returns for 49 yards with his longest being 25 yards.\u00a0 Jake Coates had five punt returns for 41 yards.\u00a0 His longest was also 25 yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colt McFadden<\/a> missed the only field goal from 44 yards out, but still finished perfect on extra points going 2\/2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NORTHERN IOWA STATS\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will McElvain<\/a> finished 10 of 20 with 235 yards passing and a touchdown.\u00a0 Trevor Allen had 16 carries and rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Hoosman had 38 yards rushing with eight carries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Weston<\/a> was the leading receiver with 108 yards on three receptions.\u00a0 Jaylin James had two receptions for 63 yards on the receiving end. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Graham<\/a> only caught one pass but it was for 34 yards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deion McShane<\/a> finished with three receptions with 28 yards. \u00a0<strong>Allen<\/strong> had one reception for two yards.<\/p>\n<p>Kicker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matthew Cook<\/a> ended up making all three of his extra points, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401127284\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zac Kibby<\/a> had six punts for 219 yards, the longest being a 49-yard punt.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UP NEXT<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Iowa (3-2) will have another tough Missouri Valley Football Conference match-up.\u00a0 They take on the undefeated and defending champ North Dakota State Bison (5-0) at the Fargodome.\u00a0 Kickoff is 2 pm on ESPN Plus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Youngstown State (4-1) will then head back to the Ice Castle (Stambaugh Stadium).
