The Buckeye’s have now won 43 in a row against teams from the state of Ohio. This game wraps up Ohio State’s non-conference slate with the Buckeye’s going 3-0. Here is a look at Ohio State vs Miami OH and what turned into a big day for the Buckeyes offense.

Ohio State vs Miami OH Recap

Slow Start

The game started off as poorly as it could have for the Buckeyes. Miami received the opening kick and had a little early success with an eight play opening drive. The Buckeyes forced a punt, but not before the Redhawks made it to midfield. The punt was downed at the two-yard line. On the Buckeye’s first play J.K. Dobbins was dropped in the backfield for a one-yard loss making it 2nd and 11 from the one-yard line. On the second play of the game, Myles Reid forced his way to Justin Fields and forced a fumble out the back of the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 Miami lead.

The Redhawk’s second drive would be 14 plays for 66 yards. Brett Gabbert, Blaine Gabbert’s little brother, would lead Miami down the field and set up first and goal from the Buckeye’s two-yard line. The Ohio State defense would hold, and in a mind-boggling decision by Miami head coach Chuck Martin on fourth and goal from the three-yard line the Redhawks opted for a field goal. It gave them a 5-0 lead. Ohio State would score only once in the first quarter, Fields and Dobbins took the Buckeyes 75 yards in seven plays capped off by a 26-yard run from Dobbins giving Ohio State the lead 7-5.

42 Point Second Quarter

The 42-point quarter was the highest-scoring quarter for the Buckeyes since at least 1960 according to Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch. After the totally uninterested first quarter of play, Ohio State flipped a switch and came to life. The quarter started with a three-play 67-yard drive. Fields connected with K.J. Hill for a 53-yard score. The rest of the quarter would be a total beat down in every facet of the game. Offensively, the Buckeye’s scored five more times. Fields would be responsible for all them. He would run in two scores and throw for three more. At the half, Fields had six touchdowns in all.

The defense would also come alive. After getting 130 yards in the first quarter, Miami would lose yardage in the second quarter. The Buckeye defense would force three turnovers. A Jeff Okudah interception on Gabbert’s first pass of the second quarter would start things off. Then Chase Young would force two fumbles, recovering one himself and Tyler Friday recovering the second. Adding to the litany of problems for Miami OH Sevyn Banks blocked a punt for the Buckeyes. At the half, Ohio State led 49-5.

Second Half Notes

The second-team offense would start the second half for the Buckeyes. Chris Chugunov got the nod at quarterback over Gunnar Hoak. Chugunov would get the first touchdown pass of his Buckeye career connecting on a thirty-eight-yard bomb to true freshmen Garret Wilson.
