{"id":13325,"date":"2018-01-21T13:21:50","date_gmt":"2018-01-21T18:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosoncfb.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=13325"},"modified":"2018-10-04T19:14:55","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T23:14:55","slug":"international-bowl-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2018\/01\/21\/international-bowl-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Team USA Blows Out Team Canada In Under-19 Game At 2018 International Bowl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Under-19 National Team routed an overmatched Under-19 Team Canada 47-7 on Friday night in the ninth\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalbowlix.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Bowl<\/a><\/strong> at <strong>AT&amp;T Stadium<\/strong> in Arlington, Texas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team USA<\/strong> controlled all facets of the game showing their superiority in what has become an annual demolition. Over the last five years, the Americans have outscored Canada 171-25 in the Under-19 exhibition.<\/p>\n<h1>History<\/h1>\n<p>The International Bowl is the largest annual global competition in American football.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2010, the event has featured the top high school and middle school-aged players from across the world. This year, U.S. National and Select Teams will compete against <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/footballcanada.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Team Canada<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Japan<\/strong>, <strong>Mexico<\/strong>, and <strong>Team Nordic<\/strong> for bragging rights.<\/p>\n<p>The slate includes 12 games in multiple age groups, from Under-14 to Under-19, that will be shown to an international audience on several ESPN platforms.<\/p>\n<p>As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usafootball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USA Football<\/a><\/strong> invites the best players in the country to wear the red, white, and blue, the opportunity to represent America is an experience players never forget.<\/p>\n<p>The showcase has produced notable\u00a0college football and NFL players such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/G\/GurlTo01.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Todd Gurley<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/M\/MathTy00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyrann Mathieu<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/W\/WinsJa00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jameis Winston<\/a><\/strong>,<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/C\/ColeCo00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Corey Coleman<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/players\/F\/FuncDe00.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin Funchess<\/a><\/strong> among others.<\/p>\n<p>In the Under-19 game, the U.S. has a commanding 8-1 series advantage.<\/p>\n<h1>International Bowl Under-19 Recap<\/h1>\n<p>In a game that Team USA was expected to win, they came out and imposed their will on the Canadians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/Christian-Turner-77372\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Christian Turner<\/strong><\/a> opened the scoring only 39 seconds into the game on a 56-yard touchdown run to give Team USA a 7-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Not even a minute later, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/rashod-bateman-46040957\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rashod Bateman<\/a><\/strong> scored on a 15-yard reverse to extend the advantage to 13-0. The Americans went for two, but failed to convert.<\/p>\n<p>Team Canada came close to scoring near the end of the first quarter. However, Team USA blocked <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huskies.usask.ca\/sports\/fball\/2017-18\/bios\/solie_david_wxql\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Solie<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s field goal attempt.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans continued to add to their lead in the second quarter when <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maxpreps.com\/athlete\/hayden-rome\/fQJS3uj0EeO00gAmVebEWg\/gendersport\/football-stats.htm\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hayden Rome<\/a><\/strong> made a 38-yard field goal to make it 16-0. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/isaiah-bolden-88682\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Bolden-Stinson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0returned a punt for a touchdown on Team Canada&#8217;s ensuing drive to put Team USA up 23-0.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/jordan-miner-85232\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Miner<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/german-green-38331\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">German Green<\/a><\/strong> intercepted <strong>Jonathan Senecal<\/strong> on consecutive Canadian possessions that Team USA converted into scores.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/Tavion-Thomas-46036670\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tavion Thomas<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/Hassan-Haskins-46040828\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hassan Haskins<\/a><\/strong> each ran for touchdowns to increase the Americans lead to 37-0.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA ended the first half with a 31-yard field goal to put them up 40-0.<\/p>\n<p>In the third quarter, Turner scored on Team USA&#8217;s first possession to make it 47-0. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/Drue-Jackson-77907\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drue Jackson<\/a><\/strong> set up the one-yard touchdown run thanks to his long reception.<\/p>\n<p>Team Canada ended the shutout in the fourth quarter after <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gothunderbirds.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=5880\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Joseph<\/a><\/strong> recovered a Team USA fumble.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marauders.ca\/roster.aspx?rp_id=9820\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andreas Dueck<\/a><\/strong> ran for a four-yard touchdown to put the Canadians on the board.<\/p>\n<h1>American Supremacy<\/h1>\n<p>With a 47-7 destruction of Team Canada, Team USA&#8217;s head coach <strong>Elijah Brooks<\/strong> was pleased with his team&#8217;s performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was happy that the guys really came out and played well and aggressive,&#8221; Brooks told <em>USA Football<\/em>. &#8220;We talked about playing fast, and they did that and did a great job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Americans dominated the game from start to finish. They ended with nearly 500 total yards compared to Team Canada&#8217;s 87.<\/p>\n<p>As all of Team USA&#8217;s roster will be playing on Saturdays next fall, Team Canada just didn&#8217;t have the firepower to match up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, when you are playing a very good team, they&#8217;re going to make plays on you and they ended up making plays,&#8221;\u00a0<strong>Steve Sumarah<\/strong>, head coach of Team Canada told <em>Football Canada<\/em>. &#8220;We kept retreating. Kudos to these guys, they regrouped in the second half and I thought we battled much better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Player\/Spencer-Sanders-76560\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Sanders<\/a><\/strong> won game MVP honors after completing 13 of 20 passes for 181 passing yards. The future <strong>Oklahoma State Cowboy<\/strong> showed off his arm talent throughout the game, giving <strong>Mike Gundy<\/strong> another quality quarterback prospect to develop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/player\/brian-asamoah-46036146\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brian Asamoah II<\/strong><\/a> earned defensive player of the game after finishing with four tackles. The future <strong>Oklahoma Sooner<\/strong> delivered a big hit to Senecal in the third quarter displaying his power and physicality.<\/p>\n<p>The win capped an unforgettable week for Team USA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From Day 1, the guys let their egos go, bought into playing for Team USA,&#8221; expressed Brooks. &#8220;So many great personalities, and good, genuine kids.
