{"id":1099,"date":"2016-09-23T17:56:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T21:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordoncollegefootball.com\/?p=1099"},"modified":"2018-01-03T22:08:52","modified_gmt":"2018-01-04T03:08:52","slug":"week-3-sun-belt-power-rankings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/collegefootball\/2016\/09\/23\/week-3-sun-belt-power-rankings\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun Belt Power Rankings; Week 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Week three is over, and we&#8217;re beginning to get a glimpse of what to expect out of the 11 teams from the <strong>Sun Belt Conference<\/strong> from here on out.<\/p>\n<p>The incumbent champion <strong>Arkansas State<\/strong> is still struggling to win a game.\u00a0<strong>Troy<\/strong>and<strong>Louisiana Lafayette\u00a0<\/strong>are looking like legitimate contenders in the conference. As does\u00a0<strong>South Alabama\u00a0<\/strong>despite being 0-2 in the conference.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Georgia Southern<\/strong> is still on top after avoiding an upset against\u00a0<strong>Louisiana Monroe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where all 11 teams fall in the power rankings after week three.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>11. Idaho (1-2, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Vandals<\/strong> had the ugliest loss of all Sun Belt teams falling 56-6 to <strong>Washington State<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th at\u00a0<strong>UNLV<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>10. Arkansas State (0-3, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Have the mighty fallen? The <strong>Red Wolves<\/strong> are the defending conference champions and are going for their fifth conference championship in six years. Right now, though, they&#8217;re just looking for a victory. At least all of their games so far were out-of-conference, but two were against teams they should have been more competitive with. They lost last Friday\u00a0to <strong>Utah State<\/strong> 34-20.<\/p>\n<p>Next game: Saturday, September 24th vs. Central Arkansas<\/p>\n<h2><strong>9. Georgia State (0-3, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Panthers<\/strong> are still winless, but they almost left <strong>Madison<\/strong> with an enormous upset victory over <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong>. Instead they returned to <strong>Atlanta<\/strong> with a 23-17 loss.<\/p>\n<p>Next game: Bye<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8. New Mexico State (1-2, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Aggies<\/strong> at times beat up on SEC opponent <strong>Kentucky<\/strong>, but they were unable to shock the <strong>Wildcats<\/strong> and lost 62-42.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th at <strong>Troy<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Louisiana Monroe (1-2, 0-1)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Warhawks<\/strong> nearly pulled off an upset against Georgia Southern. They led 14-0 in the first quarter, but they were shut down for the final three and lost 23-21. For a team going through transitions in both player and coaching personnel, this is a game they should be proud of.<\/p>\n<p>Next game: Bye<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Texas State (1-1, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Bobcats<\/strong> returned from a bye week to get crushed by SEC opponent <strong>Arkanasas<\/strong> 42-3. That&#8217;s about what most would have expected the game to turn out.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th vs.\u00a0<strong>Houston<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. South Alabama (1-2, 0-2)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>South Alabama dropped another conference game after their week one upset of <strong>Mississippi State<\/strong>. They were competitive in both games however so there are\u00a0still plenty of reasons to remain highly confident going forward.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th vs. <strong>Nicholls State<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Louisiana Lafayette (2-1, 1-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Ragin&#8217; Cajuns<\/strong> joined Georgia Southern atop the conference standings with a 28-23 win over South Alabama. It&#8217;s still early in the season, but an early lead in the conference combined with other teams struggling could provide them with a perfect opportunity to return to the success they had just a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th at <strong>Tulane<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Appalachian State (1-2, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Mountaineers<\/strong> trip to <strong>Miami<\/strong> was not a repeat performance of their week one game against <strong>Tennessee<\/strong>. They were beaten soundly by the <strong>Hurricanes<\/strong> 45-10. Other losses below\u00a0Appalachian State kept them from falling too far on this list.<\/p>\n<p>Next game: Saturday, September 24th at <strong>Akron<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Troy (2-1, 0-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Troy isn&#8217;t the prettiest team on this list but they are getting the job done. None of their wins have been too big but they are wins and they have a near upset of <strong>Clemson<\/strong> to help them out in these rankings. The <strong>Trojans<\/strong> beat <strong>Southern Miss<\/strong> on Saturday 37-31.<\/p>\n<p>Next game:\u00a0Saturday, September 24th vs. New Mexico State<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Georgia Southern (3-0, 2-0)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>Eagles<\/strong> avoided a huge conference upset Saturday against Louisiana Monroe. They managed to win 23-21 after falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter and settling for field goals for much of the game.
