Kentucky Wildcats 2019 Recruiting Profile Amani Gilmore

One of the more important commitments in the 2019 class is Amani Gilmore a dual-threat quarterback from Amite, Louisiana. Terry Wilson has the job locked down for next season however the battle for the back up position is up for grabs.

The six foot three 200 pound player is viewed by many as a Wilson clone. His team runs a similar offense to Kentucky and he is a dual-threat player. Wide receivers coach Michael Smith, a Louisiana native, has been recruiting his home state hard. Gilmore is the first of what the Cats hope are several commitments. In addition the Cats are after Gilmore’s teammate Devonta Lee, a top ten wide receiver who could make an immediate impact.

As a senior Gilmore led the Amite Warriors to the Louisiana Class 2A state championship. In the 47-20 victory over Welsh Gilmore threw for 286 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. In addition he gained another 80 yards on the ground.

Gilmore has also expressed interest in playing baseball while at Kentucky. The left-handed pitcher and outfielder could be a big asset for Coach Nick Miginone. Gilmore told reporters “I’ve wanted to play two sports my entire life. I feel like it would be something different from all other athletes.”

Gilmore originally committed to Kentucky on September 22nd and planned to wait until February to sign. However he changed his mind and signed his letter of intent.

Immediate Playing Time

As mentioned earlier Kentucky’s quarterback situation has some uncertainty. Wilson appears to have a lock on the job, however the back up role is up for grabs. Third string  Danny Clark already announced he is transferring after the season. In addition current backup Gunnar Hoak is eligible to graduate in the spring. If Hoak can’t unseat Wilson he may look elsewhere as he would be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer.

That would leave Walker Wood as the only quarterback on the roster. However he has never played in a college game due to knee and shoulder injuries. Kentucky has another quarterback commit for 2019 in Nik Scalzo. Unfortunately he tore his ACL and may not be ready for his freshman season. As you can see Gilmore is a very important player for 2019.
