Last Word on College Football Heisman Rankings

It’s never too early to talk about the Heisman Trophy. It’s one of the most coveted awards in collegiate athletics. However, it also comes as one of the most scrutinized as well. Does the award go to the best overall player in College Football? Does it go to the best player on the best team? Or, is it simply the most valuable player? Let’s take a look at our inaugural Last Word on College Football Heisman Rankings.

Top Five Candidates

1. Saquon Barkley

RB | Penn State                                               Next Game: 9/30 vs Indiana

Barkley leads our LWOS Heisman rankings after a dominating performance against Iowa. He had his best overall game in 2017 as he topped 300 total yards from scrimmage in the last second victory.

2. Baker Mayfield

QB | Oklahoma                                         Next Game: 10/07 vs Iowa State

Mayfield didn’t do anything to hurt his chances, he was just overshadowed by Barkley. Perhaps the most impressive stat for Mayfield is that he still has yet to throw an interception in his first four games.

3. Bryce Love

RB | Stanford                                         Next Game: 9/30 vs Arizona State

Love has the tough challenge of playing at times when there is not quite as many eyes on his games. Nevertheless, he had arguably the best performance of the weekend.

4. Lamar Jackson

louisville-cardinals-logo

QB | Louisville                                         Next Game: 9/30 vs Murray State

The problem for a returning Heisman winner is that you have to do something off the charts to repeat. He didn’t do anything special last week against Kent State and may not have an opportunity for a Heisman moment, as Louisville doesn’t face another ranked opponent during the regular season.

WEEK 4 VS KENT STATE

5. Rashaad Penny

RB | San Diego State                           Next Game: 9/30 vs Northern Illinois

Mr. Penny suffers from the same challenge that Love does on top of being from a Group of Five team. However, he is becoming a household name very quickly. He’s going to continue to rack up the yards and touchdowns, but the question remains if it will be enough without a marquee match-up.

WEEK 4 AT AIR FORCE
