CFL Week 17 Power Rankings

cfl week 17 rankings

These CFL Week 17 power rankings may have been the easiest week to do in quite some time. With some of the outcomes this weekend, the contenders seem to be separating themselves from the pretenders. Then again, it’s the CFL where quite literally, anything can happen. Just because you are playing well, or not playing well, in early October doesn’t automatically seal a team’s fate come playoff time.

Although, this is the time of year where it is important to start hitting your stride as the weather turns cold. So without further ado, here are the team rankings for Week 17 of the CFL season.

1) Hamilton Tiger-Cats (12-3)

     Last Week Ranking: 1

This is the best team in the CFL right now and there is no debate. The Tiger-Cats continue to impress and dominate their opponents. A 42-12 home victory over the struggling Eskimos on Friday and the Cats picked up their seventh win in their last eight games. Simply put, this is the team to beat in the CFL.

2) Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-4)

     Last Week Ranking: 3

The Roughriders were able to get by their arch-rival Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday night in a defensive battle with a 21-6 win. Not only did the victory ensure the Riders won the season series over the Bombers, but it also propelled them into sole possession of first place in the CFL West.

3) Montreal Alouettes (8-6)

     Last Week Ranking: 4

If this were a ranking of the most fun teams to watch this season, the Montreal Alouettes would be first by a mile. For the first time in five seasons, the Alouettes will be participating in the CFL playoffs. This team simply will not quit and have a belief in the system and each other that pours out even through the television screen. These Alouettes will be a tough out in the CFL playoffs and are poised to make a deep run once they get there.

4) Calgary Stampeders (9-5)

     Last Week Ranking: 2

A tough loss in Montreal this weekend drops the Stamps a couple of spots. That said, these Stampeders are still the defending champs and this time of year, you absolutely cannot count them out. With a shot at first place on the line this weekend against the Riders, expect the Stampeders to be poised and ready to put up a rigorous fight.

5) Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-6)

     Last Week Ranking: 5

After starting the season with an 8-2 record, the Bombers have now lost four of their last five contests. Certainly heading the wrong way as the CFL approaches the playoff push. The Bombers offence has fallen flat in the last two games only scoring a total of 19 points. It doesn’t get any easier this week as the Montreal Alouettes pay a visit to the ‘Peg.

6) B.C. Lions (5-10)

     Last Week Ranking: 6

Only winning once in their first 11 games this season, the B.C. Lions have now rattled off four straight wins. They still need a lot of help to make the playoffs, but if they manage to get in, things could get very interesting. This is a team that seems to have found their groove at the right time. Unfortunately, it is likely too little too late for this group.

7) Edmonton Eskimos (7-8)

     Last Week Ranking: 7

They say that the real CFL season doesn’t begin until Labour Day. Well, if that’s the case, the Edmonton Eskimos decided to pack it in early. With only one win in their last, the Esks are fading fast in the CFL West. If they do manage to hang on to the crossover spot for the 2019 playoffs, it will likely be a very quick one and done for this Jason Maas led squad.

8) Ottawa Redblacks (3-11)

     Last Week Ranking: 9

The only way that Ottawa was going to move up in these CFL Week 17 power rankings was either to get a win or if the team above them were to play so badly, one would have no choice but to move them up. Well, the Redblacks were on a bye, so guess what happened?

9) Toronto Argonauts (2-12)

     Last Week Ranking: 8

Given up. Quit. That’s what it looked like in the Toronto Argonauts latest visit to Vancouver to take on the B.C. Lions. The Lions handed the Argos a humiliating 55-8 beatdown and forced the Argos to re-visit the last place on this list. The season finale cannot come soon enough for the Argonauts and their fans.

The Last Word

There are only four weeks left before the CFL playoffs kick-off. Still, plenty of time for struggling teams to turn things around and for the hot teams to hit a bit of a cold spell. Again, anything can happen in the CFL and the final few weeks should prove to be exciting.
