CFL Week 14 Power Rankings

cfl week 14 rankings

As we zip through the Canadian football season, it is time once again for the CFL Week 14 power rankings. Another week has come and gone and of course with that, there are a few changes to these rankings.

Although only three games were played in the CFL last week, it was an extremely entertaining weekend of football. Well, for the most part anyway. The B.C. Lions and Ottawa Redblacks game left a lot to be desired. However, not surprising considering their records. In any case, here are the updated rankings for Week 14.

1) Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-3)

     Last Week Ranking: 1

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers enjoyed their second bye week of the CFL season and find themselves still atop the CFL standings, as well as in these rankings. With a well-rested club and a motivated running back in Andrew Harris coming off a two-game suspension, this could be a big week for the men in blue.

2) Calgary Stampeders (8-4)

     Last Week Ranking: 3

Admittedly, this was a tough decision moving the Stampeders from the number three spot last week to number two. Yes, they beat Hamilton last week and deserve to be here. That said, the game could have gone either way and perhaps Hamilton deserved to win that game. But they didn’t, and that’s why the Stampeders move ahead in this week’s rankings.

3) Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-3)

     Last Week Ranking: 2

The Tiger-Cats begin their three-game western road swing at 0-1 after losing to the Stampeders last weekend. Nevertheless, the Tiger-Cats remain the premier team in the CFL’s East Division and still one of the top contending teams in the CFL. The Tabbies now head to Edmonton to take on the Eskimos in what should be another excellent matchup.

4) Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4)

     Last Week Ranking: 4

Even with playing a full four-quarter game, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were able to squeak by the Montreal Alouettes. The Riders were able to brush off their humiliating loss in the Banjo Bowl and got back to their winning ways. The Roughriders have now won seven of their last eight as they head into their bye week.

5) Montreal Alouettes (6-5)

     Last Week Ranking: 5

It is almost a shame to have the Alouettes at number five, as they’re a very good team who could contend for the Grey Cup. As my colleague Nik Kowalski points out, the Alouettes are structured similarly to the Blue Bombers. Unfortunately, a close loss to the Riders last Saturday leaves the Als in fifth in these CFL Week 14 power rankings.

6) Edmonton Eskimos (6-6)

     Last Week Rankings: 6

The Eskimos were one of three teams to enjoy a bye in Week 14, and this one couldn’t have come soon enough. The Esks find themselves on a three-game losing streak and quickly falling down the CFL West standings. They’ll look to get back on track this Friday as they welcome Hamilton.

7) Toronto Argonauts (2-9)

     Last Week Ranking: 7

The Toronto Argonauts are coming back to work this week off their bye, and they have to be feeling good. A victory two weeks ago against Ottawa has a lot to do with that. But this week the Argos will face a Stampeders squad who have won three straight. Will this good feeling be short-lived? It’s probably the most likely scenario.

8) B.C. Lions (2-10)

     Last Week Ranking: 9

For the first time this season, the B.C. Lions have scraped themselves off the floor. An excellent team win over Ottawa last week will have the Lions feeling as good, if not better than the Argos. This week the Lions head to the nation’s capital to attempt the sweep over the Redblacks to try and post their first winning streak since October of last year.

9) Ottawa Redblacks (3-9)

     Last Week Ranking: 8

Oh boy. The Ottawa Redblacks are continuing to slide down the standings and these rankings. Not only are they losing but they have been humiliated in back-to-back weeks by the two worst teams in the CFL. Will they redeem themselves this weekend when B.C. comes to town? Well if they don’t, they can bid the playoffs good-bye.

The Last Word

Week 14 of the CFL season is in the books and there isn’t much left to determine as to which teams will make the playoffs. The only races now are to see how the teams will line-up come playoff time. It should be an excellent last third of the season coming up.
