CFL Week 12 Power Rankings

CFL power rankings

The Week 12 edition of the CFL power rankings features a brand new number one team. While the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have dominated these rankings, they find themselves down a spot this week.

The Bombers fell to the Saskatchewan Roughriders by a score of 19-17 at the Labour Day Classic in Regina. Although the Riders won the game, the score was much closer than most predicted. However, that won’t stop the Riders from claiming the top spot.

While this ranking change is significant, it certainly wasn’t the only adjustment from the week. Read on to find out where your team sits after Week 12.

1) Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-3)

     Last Week Ranking: 2

With the aforementioned win on Labour Day, the Roughriders find themselves in the number one spot. Although defeating the Blue Bombers was likely enough to move them to this spot, one must also account for the six-game win streak that the Riders are on. They’re certainly the hottest team in the CFL, and deserving of the number one rank.

2) Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-3)

     Last Week Ranking: 1

Despite losing on Sunday in Regina, the Bombers were very competitive while missing some key players on offence. With Matt Nichols sidelined to injury, and Andrew Harris serving a two-game suspension, many thought the Bombers would get run out of town. With the rematch looming large this weekend in Winnipeg, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Bombers reclaim the number one spot.

3) Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-2)

     Last Week Ranking: 3

Perhaps the Tiger-Cats deserve better than the third-ranked team in these CFL power rankings. However, that’s where Hamilton falls. They’ve won four in a row, albeit against B.C. (x2), Ottawa, and most recently the Toronto Argonauts. The schedule is about to get much tougher for the Tiger-Cats and it will be interesting to see how the Tabbies respond.

4) Calgary Stampeders (6-4)

     Last Week Ranking: 6

There are not many guarantees in sports, but the Stampeders beating a Jason Maas-coached team on Labour Day is about as close as one can get. A 25-9 home win for the Stampeders has them jumping up two spots in these CFL Week 12 power rankings.

5) Montreal Alouettes (5-4)

     Last Week Ranking: 5

The Montreal Alouettes were the only team in the top six of this list not play in Week 12. So at number five, they shall stay.

6) Edmonton Eskimos (6-5)

     Last Week Ranking: 4

The Edmonton Eskimos drop two spots this week thanks to yet another Labour Day loss. With the loss, the Eskimos have now dropped the season series against both Calgary and Winnipeg, which is less than ideal. If things don’t turn around for the Eskimos soon, they could find themselves headed to the crossover spot in the CFL East come playoff time.

7) Toronto Argonauts (1-9)

     Last Week Ranking: 7

Despite blowing a huge lead to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Monday, the Argonauts are at least putting together some stretches of good football. Obviously, at 1-9, the Argos don’t have any time for moral victories and need to start putting some wins together. And soon.

8) Ottawa Redblacks (3-7)

     Last Week Ranking: 8

The Ottawa Redblacks were on a bye in Week 12. It came at a really good time, considering they’ve lost seven of their last eight games. With the Argonauts next up on the Redblacks schedule, this would be the perfect time to start turning their season around.

9) BC Lions (1-9)

     Last Week Ranking: 9

The Lions too are coming off of a bye this week and are looking to get back into the win column. Problem is, this team has barely been competitive all season and it will be difficult to turn it around now. This team will finish last in the West. The only question is, how bad will their record be at the end of the season.

The Last Word

Heading into Week 13 of the CFL season, much is still to be decided — at least in the West Division. The back half of the CFL season is typically filled with excitement, and a lot of movement can happen up and down the standings. Looking forward to seeing what happens next. See you next week.
