Week 9 in the CFL is complete, and it is time once again for this edition of the power rankings. And what a week nine it was. From weather-shortened games to amazing late second comebacks (again), the CFL continues to impress in terms of stories.
With the crazy week that was, let’s find out how your team stacks up against the rest. Here we go.
CFL Week 9 Power Rankings
1) Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-2)
Last Week Ranking: 3
After a one week hiatus from the top spot in these rankings, the Blue Bombers are back, baby. A 26-24 victory over the formerly first-place ranked Stampeders will do that. The Bombers got back to their winning ways after a tough loss against the Argos the previous week proving to be the best team in the CFL. At least for one more week.
2) Calgary Stampeders (5-3)
Last Week Ranking: 1
A tough loss in Winnipeg this past week moves the Stamps down one spot into second place. In both the western division and in these rankings. However, with the Stampeders expecting to get reigning M.O.P. quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell back in their lineup soon, regaining the top spot may not be too far away.
3) Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-2)
Last Week Ranking: 2
Sure the Tiger-Cats lose a spot in these rankings but don’t read too much into that. Although the Tiger-Cats didn’t dominate the toothless B.C. Lions like many predicted, they still won the game. Third place in these rankings feels like the right spot for this team at least for this week.
4) Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-3)
Last Week Ranking: 4
Despite only playing in approximately two-thirds of a game in week 9, the Riders remain in the fourth spot. Although some might say the Roughriders were lucky to win the game last week (thanks to the weather), the win counts in the standings. And it counts in these rankings.
5) Edmonton Eskimos (5-3)
Last Week Ranking: 5
The Edmonton Eskimos have not lost two games in a row all season and that streak continued in Week 9. Powered by the ground attack led by C.J. Gable and a defence that may be the best in the CFL, the Eskimos look very good. With the Toronto Argonauts next up on the schedule, the Eskimos could continue to solidify their spot among the best teams in the CFL.
6) Montreal Alouettes (3-4)
Last Week Ranking: 6
In a shortened game against the Roughriders in Week 9, thanks to the weather and a new CFL rule, The Alouettes were potentially robbed of a win in Week 9. However, that is water under the bridge now. A loss is a loss despite how difficult the circumstances might be around it. The Als will need to rebound from this disappointment quickly as they face a very good Calgary team this Saturday.
7) Ottawa Redblacks (3-5)
Last Week Ranking: 7
If it wasn’t for the ineptitude of both the Argonauts and the Lions, the Redblacks would find themselves further down this list. With only one win in their last six games, the Redblacks have a lot of work to do to get back to respectability. A Week 10 divisional matchup against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats is as close to a must-win game as one could get at this point in the season. It will be interesting to see how the Redblacks fair in this one.
8) Toronto Argonauts (1-6)
Last Week Ranking: 8
The Toronto Argonauts have just completed their bye week and have to be feeling good despite their 1-6 record. A win two weeks ago against one of the CFL’s elite teams, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Argos could threaten to climb up these power rankings.
9) B.C. Lions ( 1-7)
Last Week Ranking: 9
Oh, so close. The B.C. Lions managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again last week. Despite a solid performance in Hamilton and a late lead, the Lions found themselves in a familiar situation. Another L in the loss column. And with a visit to Winnipeg looming on Thursday, it’s hard to imagine a win coming up. Although the Bombers did lose to the Argos two short weeks ago. Upset in the making? Doubtful.
The Last Word
Again, not a lot of movement this week in the power rankings. That said, there are some interesting and intriguing matchups on their way in week 10. Looking forward to seeing how it all plays out beginning Thursday night in Winnipeg.
Enjoy Week 10!
