The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have confirmed that Jeremiah Masoli will miss the remainder of the 2019 CFL season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

The team issued an update less than 24 hours after Masoli went down on a non-contact play while being chased by Winnipeg’s Craig Roh in the first quarter of Hamilton’s 23-15 win over the Blue Bombers.

Masoli, the reigning 2018 East Divison Most Outstanding Player, was coming off his first 5,000-yard season and establishing himself as one of the league’s best players. He will end 2019 with 1,576 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions. Masoli will be a free agent this off-season.

Dane Evans will now take over the quarterback duties for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Evans, who is in third CFL season with Hamilton, played four years at Tulsa, throwing for 32 touchdowns in his senior season. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 94 yards and an interception in relief of Masoli Friday.

Evans spent one training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with Hamilton. He is under contract with the Ti-Cats through the 2021 season.

Behind Evans on Hamilton’s depth chart is Hayden Moore. Moore spent four seasons at the University of Cincinnati, completing his senior year in 2018. In 2015, Moore threw for a team-record 557 yards against Memphis.

The Ti-Cats will have to sign a third quarterback this week with free agents Ricky Lloyd and Jeff Matthews available.

Masoli’s season-ending knee injury brings back some rough memories for Hamilton. The Tiger-Cats were 8-4 in 2015 before star quarterback Zach Collaros tore his ACL and Hamilton went on to lose in the East Divison Final.

Jeremiah Masoli is the seventh CFL starting quarterback to leave a game due to injury in 2019 and the sixth to miss the following game.
