With Week 6 of the CFL season in the books, it’s time to update these power rankings. However, with mostly predictable outcomes this past week, the rankings will not show much movement this week.
So let’s get to it.
1) Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-0)
Last Week Ranking: 1
This Bombers team just keeps on rolling. After yet another dominating performance in Week 5, it is difficult to imagine a team beating the Bombers anytime soon. Hamilton will get their chance this week and might just be the best bet to beat this team in the near future. But don’t count on it.
2) Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-1)
Last Week Ranking: 3
Just as the Eskimos benefited by a Tiger-Cats loss during their bye week in these rankings, so do the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Jumping up one spot due to the Eskimos losing to the Alouettes in Week 6. Congratulations Hamilton!
3) Edmonton Eskimos (3-2)
Last Week Ranking: 2
Every season it seems like there is discussion around the Eskimos lack of discipline. Here is an article that I wrote on this very subject last season. This past week, penalties reared their ugly head for Edmonton yet again. Nine penalties for 80 yards but more importantly, a pair of those penalties cost the Eskimos several points. Penalties that were the difference in the game. Fix these issues and the Eskimos will be a top contender in the league when it really matters in November.
4) Calgary Stampeders (3-2)
Last Week Ranking: 4
Despite several key injuries, the Stampeders continue to use the “plug and play” method. The next man up philosophy in Cowtown has worked for almost a decade now and shows no signs of letting up. Sure it was a win over the now 0-5 Argos, but a win is a win. The Stamps continue to roll.
5) Montreal Alouettes (3-2)
Last Week Ranking: 5
There is no scenario where I expected the Alouettes to be competing in the CFL East, let alone for the top spot in the CFL. However, my friend Nik Kowalski sure did in his article here. Despite all of their off-field issues, the Alouettes continue to win. A 20-10 win over the Eskimos last week and the Al’s find themselves on a three-game winning streak. Impressive.
6) Ottawa Redblacks (2-3)
Last Week Ranking: 6
Despite a hot start to the season, the Redblacks are falling into a spot where most people had predicted they would be at the beginning of the year. Not very good. The Redblacks had one of their worst games since their rebirth in the CFL accumulating one point in their loss to the Bombers. Yikes!
7) Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-3)
Last Week Ranking: 7
The Riders of Saskatchewan won their second game of the season in a somewhat convincing fashion. Scoring a 38-25 victory over the BC Lions, the Riders were fairly dominant in the second half of the game. That said, the Green team have only amassed victories over the lowly Lions and Argonauts so far this season. Until they win a game against a contender, the Riders will stick to seventh place in this ranking.
8) BC Lions (1-5)
Last Week Ranking: 8
The Lions have been abysmal this season on all sides of the ball. So far I have been adamant that this veteran team will figure it out at some point this season. However, my faith is starting to dissipate. Another loss this week and it could be lights out for the Lions this season.
9) Toronto Argonauts (0-5)
Last Week Ranking: 9
Although it seems as though the Argos are improving, especially on defence, they have yet to find the win column. Until they do, this team is locked at number nine on these rankings.
The Last Word
Again, not a lot of movement on these rankings this week but I think that`s only fair. However, we are still early in the CFL season, and as anyone who has followed this league for even a little while knows- anything is possible.
