What’s going on everybody! This is JR checking in for the first here for Last Word on CFL. Throughout this season I will be providing you with CFL fantasy advice for both your TSN and DraftKings contests. I will go position by position each week hitting on some guys I like as well as some value to help you afford some of the studs. Let’s get into it!
Quarterback
Mike Reilly
DraftKings = $11,500/$50,000
TSN = $11,754/$40,000
I know, I get it. Recommending to play Mike Reilly is like saying you should eat your fruits and vegetables. It seems like common sense, but anytime he is on the slate you want to make sure that you consider using him. He possesses a unique high floor/high ceiling combination that is usually worth every penny. Not only is he able to hurt you through the air, but he is also able to get it done on the ground.
That two-pronged playstyle is something we always love to target when rostering any quarterback. It is worth noting that Reilly went through a change of scenery in the offseason as he is now the signal caller for the BC Lions. Although there might be a short adjustment period for the veteran, I am willing to overlook it given his talent level and experience. This is also good news for the Lions skill players who could potentially see a nice uptick in CFL fantasy production with Reilly throwing them the ball.
Trevor Harris
DraftKings = $9,800/$50,000
TSN = $8,689/$40,000
If you are looking to save a little bit at quarterback this week (especially on TSN), I don’t mind using Trevor Harris. He too swapped jerseys this offseason and is now a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. Although he will have some big shoes to fill with Reilly gone, I think he could be up to the task. Last year for the Redblacks, Harris posted 20+ DK points nine times, 30+ DK points three times and eclipsed the 40 mark, one time. He is certainly capable of stuffing the stat sheet.
Running Back
Don Jackson
DraftKings = $6,400/$50,000
TSN = $7,179/$40,000
I won’t argue with you if you want to lock and load Andrew Harris into your lineups. He has a massive rushing and receiving role in Winnipeg and that shouldn’t change. It will be expensive though. This week I might try to save a little and roll with Don Jackson of the Calgary Stampeders. With Romar Morris on IR for now, Jackson should see the lion’s share of the workload out of the backfield. I would expect him to see at least 10-12 carries with a couple of targets thrown his way. He will probably have to get into the endzone to smash his price tag, but I think I am willing to roll the dice.
Sean Thomas-Erlington
DraftKings = $4,800/$50,000
TSN = $3,000/$40,000
If you really want to dive deep in the bargain barrel, then Sean Thomas-Erlington could be your guy. The Tiger-Cats cleaned house in the backfield, and now it looks like it will be a committee between Thomas-Erlington and newcomer Cameron Marshall. I would guess that Thomas-Erlington will have the first crack at carries and if he impresses he could potentially be the mainstay for Hamilton. He won’t have to do much to pay off his price tag this week, and he could be the key to help you afford the studs like Reilly and Harris in CFL Fantasy.
Receiver
Eric Rogers
DraftKings = $7,900/$50,000
TSN = $6,286/$40,000
Rogers stuck out to me immediately when looking at wide receiver pricing on both sites. Although Rogers dealt with some health issues last season, he averaged seven targets per game in the nine games he played. He and Bo Levi Mitchell clearly havebuilt-in connection and the Stampeders could lean on that early on in the year while they sort out their receiving core. The departure of Marken Michel and Davaris Daniels should also funnel a few extra looks Rogers’ way.
Juwan Brescacin
DraftLings = $6,400/$50,000
TSN = $3,301/$40,000
If you are looking for a cheap option at receiver this week (especially on TSN), then all you would have to do is look a little bit further down the depth chart underneath Rogers. Juwan Brescacin will look to take on a larger role in the Stampeders passing attack now that the guys mentioned above are out of the way.
Defence
Edmonton Eskimos
DraftKings = $4,600/$50,000
TSN = $3,488/$40,000
Before we get out of here, I’ll hit on my early selection to use as a defence this week. Right now I have my eyes on the Edmonton Eskimos for one simple reason, Antonio Pipkin will be under center for the other team. Pipkin is a bit turnover prone as he threw eight picks and three touchdowns last season. Hopefully, we can count on him for at least one this week. I am slightly concerned that Pipkin can do damage on the ground, so the Eskimos will need to keep him contained.
