In this AUS football semifinal edition, the matchup for the 2016 Loney Bowl is set. The Mount Allison Mounties won the AUS Semifinal over the Acadia Axemen to advance. The Axemen end their season in a surprise playoff run that saw them qualify for the postseason in a tiebreaker. This strong momentum to end the season and clinch a playoff spot fell short. As the Mount Allison Mounties win the AUS Semifinal over Acadia, they face the Saint Francis Xavier X-Men in the 2016 Loney Bowl.
Around AUS Football Semifinal Edition: Mount Allison Beat Acadia Face X-Men in Loney Bowl
The Acadia Axemen, previously putting up a strong fight against the X-Men, ended the regular season effectively. Their primary means of success are low-scoring, defensive games. Due to this late season trend, it was expected that they could be a strong candidate for the Loney Bowl. However, because of this low scoring presence, the Axemen have difficulty scoring touchdowns. In the AUS semifinal, their prime scoring figure would be Brandon Jennings, scoring 12 Acadia’s 18 points with four field goal kicks. This result is not for lack of trying. Quarterback Cody Cluett threw for 290 yards, his second best passing numbers in 2016. Cluett also ended the game with a ten yard rush to score Acadia’s only touchdown.
It is the Mount Allison Mounties who put up the winning offensive effort. Loucks would have his own rushing touchdown in the first quarter, the first TD of the game and the Mounties’ first lead. After a string of field goals return the lead to Acadia, Mount Allison responds with their own off the foot of Ryan Lambert. As the teams trade the lead off field goals, running back Chris Reid proved to be the difference maker with Mount Allison’s second touchdown. Loucks would solidify his prime rushing quarterback status in the AUS while solidifying the Mounties win with another rushing touchdown. Finally, another Lambert field goal would put the game out of reach despite Cluett’s rushing touchdown. The Mount Allison Mounties win AUS Semifinal matchup with the Acadia Axemen, 27-18.
2016 Loney Bowl
As the Mounties win their AUS Semifinal matchup, they advance to the Loney Bowl for the fourth consecutive season. The Mounties claimed the title in 2013 and 2014. They face defending Loney Bowl Champions, the Saint Francis Xavier X-Men; a rematch of the previous two finals. This marks the third year in a row that the Mounties and X-Men have met in the Loney Bowl. Due to their clinching of the division, the X-Men will host the final in their home of Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
The two teams met twice in 2016, with the X-Men holding a 2-0 record over the Mounties. This includes a 65-17 blowout in the final week of the regular season. This could seem like an X-Men victory is in the books. However, the strength of the QB-RB duo of Jakob Loucks and Chrid Reid cannot be denied. However, the X-Men feature the strongest QB-RB combo in the AUS. Quarterback Tivon Cook leads the division in passing yards with 2537 this season. Similarly, the X-Men lead the rushing yards category with running back Jordan Socholotiuk running for 1056 yards. Due to these statistics, for Mount Allison to compete for the title, they must focus on defensive presence and keeping the X-Men out of the end zone.
The 2016 Loney Bowl takes place on Saturday, November 12th at 2:00pm AST in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Look for a Loney Bowl preview via Last Word on Canadian Football later this week.
