Title: Good football movies to watch?
Post by: mweinsteiner on October 16, 2020, 11:49:35 pm
Do you guys have any good football movies/TV series to recommend? (Inspiration taken from Michael Marti's books idea  ;D )

Personally, I think everyone should watch Escape To Victory if you haven't already. It's about a British POW camp in WW2 where the players end up playing a football match against the guards. It has Pele, Sylvester Stallone, and Michael Caine- what more can one ask for really? Highly recommend.

(Also, for any Ipswich Town fans, it features a lot of their squad from the 80s)

The Damned United - About Brian Clough's rise at Derby and his short spell at Leeds United

Other than that and Escape to Victory, football movies tend to be garbage. Football tends to do documentaries a lot better

My all time fave is Escape to Victory! It's pretty cheesy and some of the is laughable but its a great feel good film!

Maradona is gripping. Showcases both sides of his life perfectly. Some of the footage of players trying to kick lumps out of him shows how good he actually was.

@Alex as a fellow Argentine, I can't say enough good about Maradona. I've seen it, great film.

For a TV series I recommend Sunderland Till I Die.

It's quite depressing as a Sunderland fan but it's done very well

I was a fan of the first two Goal movies as a kid hahaha.

Also, Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager, a documentary on Sir Bobby is very well done.

I saw a bit of it on Netflix, it did seem a bit depressing in a fan's perspective haha

Fever Pitch -- the Arsenal one. Not the baseball movie.

There's a series on Netflix. Think it'd called The English Game or The Beautiful Game - it's based on the FA Cup at the time of Etonian teams dominating, and the arrival of working class teams from places like Darwen (Blackburn)

Watched a few episodes of that. It can be good but also quite slow at times

I agree, it's enjoyable and a nice look at history!

I am gonna put it out there and say that Bend it like Beckham surprised me.

But yeah generally the documentaries are better made. 'Take the ball, pass the ball' is a brilliant documentary about Barcelona's Tiki Taka days.

What's it about?
It's about the 1989 Arsenal team that won the title. Winning it at Anfield in a title decider

I think I started watching this but didn't continue it, must have been binging something else.

Absolutely loved that. Was the first thing I binged in lockdown. I think they discovered after it came out that some of it was historically incorrect, which was a bit disappointing, but if you're into drama series' as well as football it's definitely worth watching

They added some of the drama elements, but I think it does accurately track the fight to have player's paid

I don't really feel much towards Liverpool or City, but watching United, Arsenal or Spurs lift trophies is not something I'm gonna do haha. At least I know I don't have to worry about watching any other London club lift the Champions League trophy  ;D

The Two Escobars is on BBC iPlayer at the moment (or was until a few weeks ago) is incredible. About how drug money monopolised Colombian football and eventually led to the death of the national team captain after he scored an own goal in 1994 WC - this is just one of the many tragedies explored in the film! Very eye-opening if you have an interest in Pablo Escobar and/or South American football.

That sounds really good! It's definitely a tragedy what happened to the Colombian captain

Horrific! Think the doc does a great job of showing Andres Escobar as someone who just loved football among all the corruption and drugs. Such a shame how things turned out for him and his family.

I heard about that! That's just awful, and being an Argentinian myself I do have a vested interest in South American football, so thanks, I'll check it out!

Btw Argentina's been bad with match-fixing, corruption, etc. but never anything as bad as murder! We're better than that haha

I quickly scrolled through this thread so apologies if someone has mentioned these suggestions.

Mike Bassett: England Manager. - Ricky Tomlinson plays a lower league manager that gets handed the England job. It's a comedy and is definitely worth a watch.

There's only one Jimmy Grimble. - This is a film I watched as a kid. It would be a good 'family film night' watch for anyone with a young family. Basically, a kid finds an old pair of footie boots and he keeps scoring pingers in them.

I remember one from the 1990's called Bostock's Cup. If I recall it was quite funny.

It was about a fictitious lower league club that managed to win the FA Cup in the 70's.

If you're looking for a movie that's emotional but yet inspirational, then it's got to be the movie "United". It describes the journey and the death of the legendary Busby babes. Guided by Sir Matt Busby, the Busby babes carved an unforgettable legacy at a very young age. Most people still regard them as the greatest Manchester United team ever. You should probably try checking it out.
