New Proposal to Cut NY Mobile Sports Betting Tax Added in the Budget Plans

According to this proposal by 2024, NY mobile betting is going to have sixteen sportsbooks instead of the current nine legal and licensed. This action alone is going to automatically lower the tax rate, which is currently at a sky-high 51% to half of that – 25%.

NY state mobile sports betting went through years of bills that didn't get accepted until last year when Gov. Andrew Cuomo finally accepted the upcoming change but insisted on the high rate of 51% tax in the Empire State. Now that Gov. Andrew Cuomo is out the rest of the lawmakers are hoping to re-shape NY mobile sports betting in a way that would be a lot more sustainable in the long term than this current model.

There are a few changes that are suggested in the proposal that you should be happy about:

  • Tax exemption on all future revenue that comes from promotional wagers or free play.
  • The 51% NY online sports betting tax to drop to 35% by 2023 by adding at least five more operators to the currently available nine licenses.
  • Adding at least two more sportsbooks by 2024 will effectively drop the tax rate to 25%.
  • Additional licenses for minority-owned sportsbooks get first dibs.

This proposal doesn't specify exact tax rates, so the NYS Gaming Commission could adjust them as necessary within the limits they have been provided. The final date until which the General Assembly has to agree upon the new budget for 2022 and 2023 is April 1st. Gov. Kathy Hochul hasn't said whether she is open or not to tweak the current NY sports betting bill, but her budget included three new downstate casinos, so everyone is more optimistic than with her predecessor in charge.

Could New Jersey's Handle Drop in February be New York's Fault?

Recently stats show that for February New Jersey's sports betting handle and revenue have dropped, but can we attribute that to New York's legal sports betting launching, or is the problem somewhere else?

New York isn't at fault here because February is the time when the NFL and NHL calendar have significant breaks. In January, the handle for all football events was reported to be $340.3 million, but a month later it dropped to $143.7 million. Other sports betting markets, like Iowa (28.8%), Tennessee (18.8%), and Indiana (18.2%) also saw significant declines after January this year, so it isn't happening only in New Jersey. Also, New York sports betting saw a 9% handle drop since it was legalized after a first full month.

Another statistic shows that sports betting in New Jersey for February are up 32.7% compared to last February. Some of you might say this is good, but compared to other states’ handle reviewed for February only, we see a significant drop. For example, the increase in handle since last February has increased in Iowa (+50.3%), Tennessee (+77.7%), and Indiana (+49.4%) by much more, as you see.

The upcoming March Madness could tell us a lot about whether or not New York's sports betting is the reason for the handle drop of New Jersey's revenue or the main reason is something else entirely.

Some people, like Sen. Joseph P. Addabbo Jr, believe that any discussion about lowering the tax rate is “premature” as he stated the large figures that will only go higher throughout March Madness will convince everyone that this is a good thing.

New York Continues to Break Handle Records by Betting $3.16 Billion

The New York State Gaming Commission released numbers that confirm the sports handle in the Empire State has reached three billion and counting since the start of legal betting in the state through the end of February. This means that for that period (January 8th – End of February) the total sports betting tax collected in the state equals $104.3 million.

FanDuel seems to be leading the charge in New York with their sports handle record of $1.07 billion since the launch through February 27th. If you aren't sure what “handle” means, it is the total sum people place on bets in a specific state and timeframe. The state legalized sports betting just in time for the Super Bowl and the playoff games beforehand. Now, they are also expected to see an increase in the handle because of March Madness.

For February itself, mobile operators paid more than $42 million in tax thanks to the sports betting handle for the month of around $1.528 billion in bets. Still, those numbers are considerably lower than the January figures we saw of $1.686 billion in handle for both mobile and retail sportsbooks in the state and $63.2 million in taxes.

Top NY Sports Betting Apps and Sites for 2022

Right now, New York has only allowed a total of nine mobile sports betting NY licenses to be released. The first four sportsbooks that launched on the first day of legal betting were BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, FanDuel, and DraftKings. After one week and three days, BetMGM also launched in New York. One week after that the sixth legal sportsbook became available – PointsBet.

February started with WynnBet launching on the third day of the month, as well. Exactly a month after that on March 3rd, Resorts WorldBET made its launch in New York. The final license was expected to be for Bet365, but they couldn't pass, and that left it for Bally Bet. As of now, Bally Bet still hasn't launched, but we are expecting them to do so soon.

Here, you can read more about each bookmaker's offer for new customers and what their platform can provide customers in the long run.

DraftKings – $1,000 Deposit Bonus + $50 Free + Bet $5 Win $200 CBB Offer

DraftKings is one of the few bookmakers that has decided to offer a special DraftKings sportsbook promo code for new players that includes a special March Madness offer. They launched on the first day of legal sports betting in the Empire State with three other bookmakers. Also, their mobile app provides a special personalized bets screen where you will see the top suggested odds and bets based on your history and preferences rather than seeing what is the hottest market or odds for all DraftKings customers. They also provide the same mobile app in all states rather than some bookies that offer additional apps for each state they are legal in.

Their welcome offer is quite interesting and consists of a $1,000 deposit match plus $50 free. The main deposit bonus is gradually unlocked based on how much you wager on the platform until you receive a maximum of $1,000 match deposit. You will also receive a $50 free wager following your first deposit, which you can use on any sport or market.

The kicker is that they also offer special March Madness bonus odds for the NCAA Tournament game. You simply have to make a first deposit of at least $5 on the platform and opt-in to the 40-1 odds bonus. Next, you have to bet $5 on any one of the teams left to win (it doesn't matter if it's an underdog or a favorite) and select the odds to boost function in the bet slip. If the team you picked ends up winning the tournament, you will get a special $200 site credit bonus.

DraftKings sportsbook promo code also offers plenty of other bonuses for existing customers and exciting new chances to bet on sports every day. Their pools section is also quite popular in addition to the sportsbook page filled with thousands of betting markets you can bet on every day.

FanDuel – $1,000 Risk-Free Wager for New Customers or a $150 Instant Bonus

FanDuel was among the first bookmakers to launch in New York on January 8th and later they opened a physical sportsbook in the state at Tioga Downs. The company's headquarters are in New York, so their presence there is among the most significant and their handle has been recorded to be the best out of all sportsbooks in the first month of sports betting alone. They have plenty of useful features you can use, including the revolutionary same game parlay feature. Also, you can monitor the progress of each bet you placed via their special live streaming feature.

FanDuel revealed their special March Madness offer of a $150 instant bonus once you place a $5 wager on any Moneyline game during the NCAA. If your wager wins, you will not only receive your original payout from the bet, but you will also receive an additional $150 bonus in site credits within 72 hours of bet settlement. You will have two weeks to wager your free bets before you lose them.

If you think that the $1,000 risk-free bet offer is more up your alley, you can wait until the March Madness offer ends and register then. Of course, that is if they go back to their previous welcome bonus for new customers, which was similar to Caesars Sportsbook or BetMGM's welcome offers of risk-free wagers. Read the full terms and conditions before choosing and registering on the platform, so you are aware of the specific terms and conditions for the welcome bonus you want to get.

FanDuel sportsbook promos offer a ton of promotions for existing customers, so you only have to check the “Promotions” page for the newest bonuses you can benefit from, which include free bets, odds boosts, profit boosts, parlay boosts, and a special refer a friend bonus.

Caesars Sportsbook – First Bet Insurance of up to $1,100 Bonus

Three casinos in upstate New York already have the retail version of Caesars Sportsbook available – Turning Stone, Point Place, and Yellow Brick Road. That being said, the operator was among one of the first to launch a mobile platform in the state, as well. They already promise to keep customers entertained with the special rewards program they offer, an extra free bet for your birthday month, which is only adding to the one free bet per month they promised their customers.

New customers can claim a special welcome offer of up to a $1,100 bonus as first wager insurance. Some also call this type of offer a risk-free bet, which might be more familiar to you. The specifics of this type of bonus offer are that your first bet has to be placed on the sportsbook in the timeframe allowed and it can be up to $1,100 because that is the maximum bonus you can receive from the welcome offer. If your first bet loses, you will receive a refund in site credits equal to your first wager's amount. Of course, there are specific terms and conditions you have to be aware of and follow before you can receive and keep your bonus.

Besides that, existing customers can be happy to learn that you will have a lot more opportunities to receive and benefit from bonuses after you complete your first welcome bonus offer. They offer dozens of odds boosts available for NHL, NFL, MLS, and NBA games. Also, there is a risk-free parlay bonus you can receive if you bet on particular basketball or hockey games. BetRivers – 100% Deposit Match up to $250

BetRivers was one of the first four sportsbooks to launch on the same day as legal betting in New York. They provide new customers with a special deposit match of up to $250, which is the same as in most of their other states. Compared to other welcome offers at this time of the year, the BetRivers offer seems small and not worthy of looking at more than once, if you are choosing between these sportsbooks. Even if the amount seems small, they are still one of the best platforms around and offer customers a wide array of betting options and features to try out.

The $250 deposit bonus is a maximum figure and it's based on the amount of your first deposit. The good thing here is that you will receive the welcome bonus regardless of whether or not your first wager wins or loses on the platform, which is in some ways better than the risk-free bonuses we already mentioned some sportsbooks are offering.

The wagering requirement on the welcome offer is only x1, so it also doesn't have tough conditions for you to do before you can unlock your funds. Their iRush Rewards program is also one of the best in the state because it offers plenty of opportunities to get both online and offline rewards in one of their physical locations, including the Schenectady location that the brand – Rivers casinos – have in New York.

They have two unique sections – one is the traditional sportsbook, and the other is the points betting section. Points betting is only available at this bookmaker. Their platform is also full of promotions and bonuses you can claim as a new customer, including the refer a friend bonus. PointsBet also has a few popular features that attract customers, like boosted odds, parlay booster, name a bet feature, fast mobile application, and their special rewards (loyalty) program for existing customers.

The new bonus for new customers for a limited time includes a $100 free bet plus the additional $2,000 you can get from the two risk-free bets awarded to you as a new customer on PointsBet. The first part of the bonus that doesn't include any NCAA perks is the regular risk-free bets up to a total of $2,000. The maximum fixed odds bet you can receive is $500, while the PointsBet wager available to you is up to $1,500. You will only receive these two free bets if your first wagers on the traditional sportsbook and points betting section lose. You should read the full terms and conditions and familiarize yourself before registering on the platform.

For March Madness only new customers can receive a $100 additional bonus. They have to place a free game wager of at least $50 on each round of the NCAAM basketball tournament. If you do so, you will qualify for the up to $100 in Live Free Bets bonus. You will receive $20 in free bets for each round from the first round of 64 through the round of 4. The full terms and conditions are on the platform.

BetMGM – $1,000 Risk-Free Bet for New Customers

BetMGM arrived a little late to the party on January 17th, but they still managed to launch in tome for the NFL playoff schedule. Their mobile platform offers unique wagers you may not see anywhere else and they have a ton of betting features you can try out. Besides the unique cash-out feature, which allows you to settle a wager and at least get something back from it instead of losing it all, they also provide a new feature called edit bet. Other popular features include live streaming and one game parlay.

ny sports betting apps

New customers on the BetMGM bonus code can receive a risk-free bet of up to $1,000. Also, there is a weekly $10 free bet bonus you can benefit from at any time. The risk-free bonus requires a minimum deposit of at least $20 on the platform and you need to place your first wager on the sportsbook. The risk-free bet you will receive is there only as a safety net, which will grant you site credits only in the case of your first bet losing. If your first wager was more than $50, you will receive the free bets in denominations of 20% of the stake amount. The opposite goes for bets that are $49 or less – you will receive the site credits in one free bet voucher. You also have seven days to use the free bets before they disappear.

Once you finished that bonus, you are no longer considered a new customer and can't benefit from such bonuses, but offers, like refer a friend or any of the other bonuses available for existing customers. They can range from free bets to one-game parlay insurance or their special M Life rewards program, which offers plenty of bonuses.

Wynn Bet – Bet $10 and Win $200 in Free Bets

WynnBet Sportsbook is the online brand of the Wynn and Encore casino chains. They didn't launch as early as their competitors in New York but waited almost a full month before launching in the Empire State. The new customer welcome offer includes four free bets up to $200 if you place the first bet of at least $10 on the platform at odds of –120 or greater. Each of the free bets you will receive is in a $50 denomination, so you will be able to receive a maximum of four free bets whether or not your first wager wins.

ny mobile sports betting

Some of the conditions accompanying this bonus are slightly tougher than what other sportsbooks offer their customers and maybe that is why the WynnBet brand isn't as popular in other states. For example, you will have to wait 21 days to receive your free bets (the first free bet is given 72 hours after the bet settles and the three other free bets are given in seven days after the last one). Also, the odds of –120 at which you have to place your initial wager to qualify, seem to be higher than normal. This means that the wager you select won't have a high chance of winning.

Bally Bet – Welcome Bonus Still Unavailable in NY

Bally Bet isn't as popular as other sportsbooks in the state and they still haven't launched in New York. They made their debut in May 2021 when they launched in Colorado partnered with Mardi Gras, Golden Gates, & Golden Gulch. In Iowa, they are partnered with Elite Casino Resorts and the brand owns Elite Sportsbook, which is small-scale compared to others and only available in these two states. December 2021 was their final expansion to Indiana with Bally's Evansville as a casino partner.

Bally Bet either had a license or a contract with a casino partner in eight other states but they still haven't launched there, including New York. Among those other states are Virginia, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Arizona.

In other states where the sportsbook is live the welcome offer consists of a risk-free bet of up to $550, which is a great first bet offer for online customers. We don't know when exactly they plan to launch in New York, but we will be sure to update you when we do.

Betting Process on NY Sports Betting Apps and Sites – Steps

If you are new to sports betting, then placing an online bet would be harder for you because you haven't done it before. Don't worry though because we will explain everything you should know about the first steps on any sportsbook you should be taking.

Registration and Verification

The first thing you should do after you find a sportsbook and welcome bonus you like is to click on the button and begin the registration process. You will be required to enter information, like your date of birth, full name, address, phone number, gender, and other details about yourself, which will be used to verify your identity.

Now, the verification process is required everywhere and you won't be able to use the sportsbook if you don't complete it. To do so, you need to provide copies of documents that prove your payment methods, identity, age, and address. Usually, these documents can be bank/card statements, utility bills that are less than three months old, passport or driver's license copies, or another official document with your name and the required details for verification.

Making Your First Deposit

Your first deposit on the platform can be usually made either during registration or after that. You have to click on the “Deposit” button and follow the instructions to complete the first transaction. In the USA, the usual payment options available are bank cards, e-wallets, online banking Play+ prepaid cards, etc. We recommend that you use the same method for withdrawing, as well, because then you won't have to verify more than one payment method and waste even more time before receiving your funds.

Placing Your First Bet

Placing a wager on any sportsbook platform consists of the following steps:

  • Log in to your account and browse through the sportsbook to find what you want to bet on.
  • After selecting a sport and event, you can click on the odds to add a specific wager to your bet slip.
  • Enter a stake amount in the bet slip for the market you selected.
  • Choose if you will use free site credits or your account balance.
  • Browse to add more wagers to your slip, or continue and finalize this bet only.

Is New York Sports Betting on In-State Teams Legal and Which Teams to Wager On?

Many New York teams have millions of fans in the state. For example, if we only look at the professional teams, there are a total of twelve different professional teams across six different sports leagues.

When it comes to women's teams the only one based in New York is the WNBA's New York Liberty. There are two soccer teams in the state – New York Red Bulls and New York City FC. Three professional NFL teams are based in New York:

  • New York Jets
  • Buffalo Bills
  • New York Giants

When it comes to baseball, New Yorkers can cheer for either the New York Yankees or New York Mets, which over the years has been a difficult rivalry. Pro basketball fans can choose their favorite from a total of two NBA teams – the New York Knicks or the Brooklyn Nets. The NHL can also be proud of having three teams from New York:

  • New York Rangers
  • Buffalo Sabers
  • New York Islanders

With so many professional sports teams around, the betting markets and their popularity has increased a lot more than in other states with fewer pro teams.

College sports betting is also quite popular in New Yor, but same as in NJ, people who bet from the Empire State can't place bets on in-state college teams. The key difference from the Garden state is that you can place wagers on college games taking place in the state, however, not on any in-state games that include NY teams. There are a total of twenty-two Division I schools in New York, but only three of them play football on an FBS level. All twenty-two schools though have Division I men's and women's basketball programs.

Another thing about college sports is that player props on any college teams aren't allowed. This means that you won't find these types of wagers on sportsbooks in New York.
