New Jersey Voters Refuse to Expand Sports Betting to In-State Colleges
Voters in the state of New Jersey rejected the proposed ballot question to expand sports betting and include betting on in-state college sports. The question was rejected 57% to 43%.

Best Sports Betting Websites and Apps in New Jersey
There are many New Jersey sports betting apps and websites you can use to place a wager online, but we will focus here on a few most popular sports betting operators in the state.
FanDuel Sportsbook – From Fantasy Sports to Sports Betting
SIGN UP NOW WITH FANDUEL >>
One of the first bookies to offer online sports betting in New Jersey was FanDuel since they launched their operation in the state back on September 1st, 2018. Their land-based affiliate in the state is Meadowlands.
This operator became famous by offering fantasy sports before they eventually expanded to sports betting as this became legal in more and more states. They are now one of the biggest bookmakers in the US and they operate in many different states.
FanDuel Sportsbook Welcome Offer
If you are thinking of joining FanDuel, keep in mind that new players have a chance to claim the welcome offer that’s available on the site. This welcome offer is available to anyone who opens a new account at FanDuel, which means that you have to be at least 21 years old and located in New Jersey (or any other state in which the bookie operates).
The welcome offer is a risk-free first bet worth up to $1,000. This means that FanDuel will refund your losses in bonus funds if your first bet is a losing one, up to the maximum value of $1,000. Of course, if your first bet is a winning one, you get nothing. If your bet slip has multiple selections, the first selection only will count towards this promotion.
Once your first bet is settled, you will receive bonus funds within 72 hours. You can use these bonus funds to place any bet without restrictions. If your bet wins, you will keep the winnings, but not the amount that you wagered.
BetMGM Sportsbook – A Well-Known Name in the Industry
SIGN UP NOW WITH BETMGM >>
As one of the giants of the casino and gambling industry in the US, they are truly one of the leaders in both the online and physical gambling space. BetMGM has been present in many states as soon as online sports betting was legalized in those states.
That is the case with New Jersey online sports betting as well since BetMGM launched their website on August 22nd, 2018. Their land-based affiliate is Borgata AC.
BetMGM Sportsbook Welcome Offer
New players at BetMGM also get the opportunity to claim their welcome offer, which is pretty much the same one as the one we talked about when we covered FanDuel – a risk-free first bet up to $1,000.
As soon as you open your account on the website, you can make a deposit and place your first bet. That bet is the qualifying bet for this promotion and if your first bet losses, you will get back the amount you wagered in free bets, up to $1,000. You can use a BetMGM promo code like WABPLAY when you register.
Keep in mind that qualifying bets greater than $50 will be broken down into five denominations. For example, if you placed $500 on your first bet and you lost, you will get 5 free bets worth $100 each. Qualifying bets under $50 will be awarded back as a single free bet. The value of a free bet will not be included in your winnings and you will get 7 days to use your free bets.
Caesars Sportsbook – Another Gambling Giant
SIGN UP NOW WITH CAESARS >
As one of the biggest casino names in the US, Caesars got into the online sports betting industry as soon as that was possible, including New Jersey sports betting. This happened back in 2018 and their website was launched on September 6th. Caesars has land-based affiliates in multiple New Jersey locations – Harrah's, Bally's, and, of course, Caesars AC.
Last year, Caesars acquired William Hill, one of the world’s biggest sports betting operators. Since then, Caesars used its sports betting platforms and apps in many states, including New Jersey.
Caesars Sportsbook Welcome Offer
Unlike the previous two bookies on our list, Caesars has a different welcome offer for new players, but you have to enter our Caesars Sportsbook promo code USBETCZR in order to claim it. This welcome offer is a first bet insurance of up to $1,100, which means that if you place a first-time wager of up to $1,100, get it back in the form of a Free Bet if you lose.
The difference between this welcome offer and the risk-free first bet is the fact that Caesars gives you a free bet to match your first bet whether it wins or losses. However, your first bet has to be placed on minimum odds of -200 for the bet to become eligible.
Once you receive your free bet, you will have 30 days to use it. As always, you get to keep the winnings from your free bet, but not the wagering amount.
DraftKings Sportsbook – The First Bookie in New Jersey
SIGN UP NOW WITH DRAFTKINGS >
The first sports betting website in the state of New Jersey was DraftKings, also known for fantasy sports before they branched out to online sports betting in many states.
Their website was launched on the 6th of August, 2018 and it’s been one of the most popular ones in NJ until now. Their land-based affiliate is Borgata AC, but their online presence is much stronger than in-person betting.
DraftKings Sportsbook Welcome Offer
The welcome bonus at DraftKings is an interesting one and it is meant to be used on all their products, including sports betting, fantasy sports, and casino. This welcome offer matches 20% of your first deposit amount, up to the maximum amount of $1,000.
However, this promotion comes with very strict wagering requirements. First of all, bonus funds are awarded in increments of $1 for every $25 spent on the website. That means that you will have to play through $25,000 to get the maximum bonus amount of $1,000. You can do it by playing daily fantasy, casino games, or betting on sports (minimum odds of -300). Also, you get 90 days to satisfy wagering requirements.
SugarHouse Sportsbook – A Good Option for Sports Betting
As a part of the Rush Street family, SugarHouse Sportsbook has been one of the first websites to launch in New Jersey. This happened on August 23rd, 2018 and the bookie has done very well in the state since then. Their land-based affiliate is Monmouth Park.
One of the main reasons why SugarHouse is so popular is its user-friendly layout, both on its website and its mobile app.
SugarHouse Sportsbook Welcome Offer
The welcome promotion on the SugarHouse website is a very generous one. More importantly, it’s also very simple and has easy wagering requirements.
This welcome offer is a 100% matching bonus on your first deposit, up to $250. To claim this offer, you have to use the bonus code PLAYMAX during registration and make a deposit of at least $10 once you open your account.
As soon as you make your first deposit, SugarHouse will match it up to the maximum amount of $250. Once you receive your bonus, you only have to play through it once before you can withdraw your winnings.
PointsBet – From Australia with Love
This bookmaker is based in Australia but their website is become increasingly popular in the US, including the state of New Jersey. PointsBet started operating in the state in January of 2019 and their land-based affiliate is Meadowlands.
One of the reasons for this bookie’s rising popularity is the innovative and unique offer called Points Betting, which is focused on lines and spread and not just the final outcome of games.
PointsBet Welcome Offer
The welcome promotion at PointsBet is a very generous one and rather interesting, especially since it is split into two separate bonuses. Overall, your first two bets are risk-free and can get you back up to $2,000 in free bets. Don’t forget to use the promo code BETMAX during registration to claim the bonus.
The first part of the welcome offer is a risk-free bet for fixed-odds betting, where you can get up to $500 in free bets back if your first bet is a losing one.
The second part is a risk-free first bet for Points Betting and you can get up to $1,500 back in free bets if your first bet loses. Keep in mind that free bets that you receive can be split up to four times, allowing you more freedom in how you want to use your free bets.
New Jersey Online Sports Betting – How to Place a Bet
If you are new to sports betting, it may seem a bit daunting to learn how to place a bet on sports. With that in mind, we have a step-by-step guide to make things easier for you.
Step 1 – Choose Your Bookie
The first thing you have to do is choose the sportsbook on which you want to create an account and later place your bets. We mentioned a few of the most popular ones, but feel free to browse further and check other ones too.
When you are choosing a bookie, pay attention to the few things that can help you make a decision. This includes the welcome bonus, other promotions and bonuses, odds and limits, banking options, etc.
Step 2 – Sign Up On the Site
Once you’ve chosen the bookie, it’s time to create an account on the website:
- Visit the website
- Find the “Join” or “Register” button on the site and click on it
- Fill the registration form by entering the required information (name, address, date of birth, email address, etc.).
- Enter the promo code if you have one
- Provide proof of ID if required
- Verify your location (you’ll need GeoComply or just allow the app to track your location if you are using a mobile app)
- Confirm your registration by clicking on the verification email
Step 3 – Make a Deposit
Before you can place your first bet, there is one more step that you need to take and that’s making your first deposit. This may not be necessary on some websites that give you a free bet as a welcome bonus without a deposit required, but otherwise, you need to make a deposit to have the funds to place a bet.
Some websites will take you directly to the page where you can make a deposit once your registration is complete. However, that’s not always the case and you may need to find the deposit screen on your own.
To do this, go to “My Account” or some similarly named section. This is usually located in the upper right corner of the site. Once there, you will see a few different options related to your account and one of them will be the option to make a deposit. Follow the instructions on the deposit screen to add money to your account.
Depending on the bookie, you may be able to use a few different payment methods. The most common ways to make a deposit include credit and debit cards, bank wire transfer, e-check, and various e-wallet options like PayPal, Skrill, or Neteller.
Step 4 – Place Your Bet
Finally, you can now place your first bet on the website. Most websites will have a bet slip visible on every page even before you add any selections.
In any case, you will first have to find the sport that you are interested in, then the specific match. Once you find the game you want to bet on, click on it and you will see all betting markets for this game.
Choose the market you like and click on it to add it to your bet slip. If you want to make a parlay bet, you can add more selections to the bet slip. Once you are done with it, you can enter the amount you wish to wager and submit your bet.
New Jersey Sports Teams to Bet On
While New Jersey online sports betting in no way depends on professional sports teams that play in New Jersey, having pro teams in multiple sports can certainly help the engagement of fans and bettors. So, let’s take a look at some of the teams that play their games in the state of New Jersey.
New Jersey Devils
The only team in any of the major sports in the US that has New Jersey in their name are the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are a hockey team that competes in NHL and you can watch their games at the Prudential Center in Newark.
The franchise was founded as Kansas City Scouts back in 1974. The team moved to Denver in 1976 where they were known as Colorado Rockies. In 1982, they finally moved to New Jersey, although their first home was Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford. The Devils moved to their current arena in 2007.
The Devils had little success before moving to New Jersey. Since then, the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals five teams and won the NHL title in 1995, 2000, and 2003.
New York Giants
Founded almost one hundred years ago, in 1925, the Giants are one of the oldest football franchises in the NFL. The team is also one of the most popular ones in the country. Although they have New York in their name, the Giants play their matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
New York Giants are one of the most successful NFL teams in history and they are ranked third with eight NFL championship titles. Four of those titles were won before Super Bowl was established, the other four after. Their last championship came in 2011 when they beat New England Patriots.
New York Jets
Just like the Giants, the Jets also play their home games at MetLife Stadium, despite being a New York team by name. The team was founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York but took the name Jets after a few seasons.
The Jets have only made one Super Bowl appearance in 1968, in which they beat Baltimore Colts to win their first and only NFL title to date. Right now, the Jets are the team with the longest absence from Super Bowl, after the Browns and the Lions who never appeared in one.
New York Red Bulls
The Red Bulls were founded in 1994 and they are one of the teams that participated in MLS from its initial season in 1996. They were called New York/New Jersey Metro Stars before being sold to Red Bull in 2006 when they were rebranded to Red Bulls.
The Red Bulls have only reached the final of the MLS Cup once in 2008, but they were defeated by Columbus Crew. The team played their matches at Giants Stadium at first, but now their home stadium is the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
Other Teams in New York Metropolitan Area You Can Bet On
The New York metropolitan area, also known as the Tri-state area, also includes parts of New Jersey. So, teams from this area are quite popular in New Jersey as well. With that in mind, let’s check them out as too:

The team had their best results in New Jersey when they reached the NBA Finals two years in a row in 2002 and 2003. However, the franchise, which was founded in 1967, is still without a championship in the NBA, but they did win two ABA titles in the 70s.
- New York Yankees – The most decorated franchise in MLB, the Yankees have won the World Series 27 times in their history. The team was founded back in 1901 as Baltimore Orioles before moving to New York in 1903, where they’ve been ever since.
- New York Mets – The much younger baseball team based in New York was founded in 1962 after the Dodgers and Giants left the city. The Mets have won the World Series twice in their history, in 1969 and 1986.
- New York Knicks – Despite their lack of success in the past few decades, the New York Knickerbockers are still one of the most popular NBA teams. The team was founded in 1946 and they have won the NBA title twice – in 1970 and 1973.
- New York Rangers – The Rangers were established in 1926 and they were one of the Original Six teams that competed in the NHL before expansion. The franchise won the Stanley Cup four times so far, in 1928, 1933, 1940, and 1994.
- New York Giants – Being one of the oldest football teams in the country, the Giants joined the NFL back in 1925. In their illustrious history, the Giants have won the NFL title eight times, which is a third-best record of all NFL teams.
- New York Islanders – The Islanders are a relatively young team since they’ve been established in 1972. However, not long after that, the Islanders became one of the best NHL teams and one of the eighth recognized dynasties after winning four consecutive titles from 1980 to 1983, which remain the only titles for the team to date.
