This guide has everything you need to know about the NBA playoffs. We'll cover how many teams are in the playoffs, how they're seeded, what the Play-In Tournament is, and how the playoffs progress beyond the first round.

We'll also have you covered with NBA Daily Picks and parlays and series breakdowns for every game. This is your one-stop shop for the 2022 NBA Playoffs.

How Many Teams are in the NBA Playoffs?

The playoffs feature 16 teams in total, though the Play-In Tournament has opened the opportunity for an extra two teams per-conference to fight for their way in. The top six teams in both the Eastern and Western Conference are guaranteed to participate in the first round. The next four teams in each conference play in a six-game mini-tournament to decide the final seventh and eighth seeds.

How are the NBA Playoffs Seeded?

The seeding is decided on final win-loss records. The winning percentages of each team may be tied, leading to tiebreaker procedures. A two-team tiebreaker is determined by the following criteria:

  • If there's an advantage in head-to-head matchups, the team with more wins earns the higher seed.
  • If their head-to-head series is tied, if either is a divisional winner, they proceed.
  • If everything else is equal, then we go to the higher winning percentage within their respective division, if both are in the same division.
  • If they're not in the same division, then the higher winning percentage in conference games wins.
  • The sixth tiebreaker is the winning percentage facing teams against the opposite conference.
  • Finally, if everything else is tied, we go to the point differential of points scored and allowed for each team.

What is the Play-In Tournament?

2022 is the second-year of the Play-In Tournament. The first-year was a promising experience that gave the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs the opportunity to fight for their playoff life in the Western Conference. In the East, it was the Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Hornets in the nine-10 game.

The winner of each of those matchups faced the loser of the seven-eight seed game. That winner then earned the eight seed. The winner of the seven-eight seed game earned their seventh seed with just their initial victory.

When do the 2022 NBA Playoffs Start?

We know the Play-In Tournament begins April 12 and finishes the 15th. The first round subsequently starts the next day on April 16. But between then and the Finals, which begin on June 2, nothing has been announced.

You can see now the whole schedule of the NBA Playoffs.

How Many Games are in the First Round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs?

Every round of the NBA Playoffs play a minimum of four games and go to a maximum of seven games. The best-of-seven format means that the first competitor to reach four wins will advance to the next round. The goal of every playoff participant is to win 16 games and hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
