Esports Betting Was Legalized in Iowa as of March 2022

At the beginning of March, the Iowa House of Representatives passed a bill that would add e-sports among a few other categories to betting in the state. The vote was passed with 71-28 votes. The bill was then passed to the State Government Committee and is awaiting confirmation by March 18th.

The basics of the bill include legalizing wagering on e-sports, player awards, NFL Draft, and charitable sports events including pro athletes. If you are using a mobile app, you will also be able to pay with an e-wallet for gaming on the casino floor.

Iowa still won't be able to wager on the NFL Draft next month even if the bill passes because it won't likely take effect until the beginning of July this summer.

March Sports Handle Could be the Biggest Yet in Iowa

Last year the sports betting handle for March was the biggest yet when it comes to Iowa sports betting. Of course, before that, conditions in 2020 weren't ideal to compare those statistics, but 2021 blew everyone away with the generated numbers. We are expecting an even bigger handle to be reached in 2022 with March Madness underway.

Last March more than $161 million were wagered in sports in the state and this year that number can climb because of the increased number of sportsbooks available in Iowa. There are also more Iowa teams in the post-season tournaments in most leagues.

There are over a dozen different Iowa sports betting apps or sites available in the state, but only some of them are among the best. Below, we have listed the best online operators in the state and what they offer new customers.

FanDuel Iowa Sports Betting at Diamond Jo or Online

The online launch for FanDuel in Iowa is September 2020, while the retail sportsbook at Diamond Jo launched in August 2019.

FanDuel surprises their Iowa customers with not only a unique March Madness welcome offer of $150 free bets, but you can also benefit from their standard welcome bonus of a risk-free wager up to $1,000. Their $1,000 welcome bonus is only if your first wager loses on the platform and it would be refunded in full up to a maximum of $1,000. If your first wager wins, you won't receive the welcome bonus. The instant $150 bonus for March Madness is guaranteed and you only have to place a minimum wager of $5 on any NCAA Moneyline wager.

Of course, there are specific terms and conditions you will have to follow to ensure that you qualify for the offers, but other than that they are very popular. They also have one of the best Iowa sports betting apps you can use available for both iOS and Android devices. It's user-friendly and free of charge. Also, you can use the available betting features, like live streaming, cash out, or the same game parlay on both the site and the mobile app.

BetMGM Sports Betting in Iowa at Diamond Jo Worth and Online

iowa online sports betting

BetMGM's casino partner in Iowa is Diamond Jo Worth Casino and they launched their online sportsbook in January 2021. The retail sportsbook was launched back in August 2019. The bookmaker itself offers a risk-free bet of up to $1,000 for all new customers. The offer gives you the chance to receive one or multiple free bets if you lose your first wager on the platform based on your initial stake. If you bet more than $50, you are likely to receive multiple free bets, while if you wagered anything less than $50, you will only receive one free bet.

Existing customers can also benefit from many special offers with the BetMGM bonus code, including their M Life Rewards program. The $10 weekly free bet is an interesting offer that comes to mind and it's available to all existing customers that complete the requirements. With it, you can redeem rewards at MGM properties all around the USA.

Caesars Sportsbook at Five Physical Locations and Online

Caesars launched simultaneously their online and retail sportsbooks on August 15th, 2021. There are five different physical locations available, including Isle Bettendorf, Prairie Meadows, Isle Waterloo, Harrah's Council Bluffs, and Horseshoe Casino.

The welcome offer available for new customers was significantly increased recently to first bet insurance of up to $1,100. If your first bet loses, you will receive a refund of up to $1,100 in site credits. If you win your first bet the welcome bonus becomes unavailable. Also, there are some other restrictions and terms related to the welcome bonus, but you best check out the platform and see for yourself what the latest terms of the bonus are. In August 2021, Caesars Sportsbook acquired William Hill and officially replaced them around the states except for Nevada, including in Iowa. This means that all past William Hill locations are now Caesars Sportsbook.

Caesars Sportsbook is among the top Iowa sports betting sites that offer plenty of bonuses and promotions for existing customers, as well, and you can find all of them on the Iowa website. The bookie itself provides plenty of betting options both for pro and college teams, as the state's regulations allow. Also, some of the best regular promotions can be found on the website and the brand name is recognizable and trustworthy, which attracts more new customers.

PointsBet at Catfish Bend or Online Sports Betting Iowa

PointsBet launched its online platform in November 2019, which was two months after it launched in its retail location at Catfish Bend Casino.

is sports betting legal in iowa

They offer new customers a total of $2,000 risk-free wagers on both the traditional sports betting platform and the points betting section. The traditional sportsbook bonus is only up to a $500 refund if your bet loses, while if you lose a bet in the points betting section, you can get a refund of up to $1,500.

The cool thing about PointsBet is that they decided that all new customers who placed $50 on each round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament (March Madness) will get $100 in free bets, which makes $20 for each round you successfully guessed. Not many bookmakers out there offer new customer bonuses related to March Madness or any other big event, but PointsBet is one of the few.

The platform itself is popular not only for the new way of wagering they created – points betting, which is essential, the more you are right, the more you win for each wager. For example, let's say you bet that the Bulldogs will win by five points over the Cyclones in an in-state NCAA Division I basketball game. If the Bulldogs win by four points, you will win more than if they were to win by one point. If the second option becomes a reality, you will essentially be winless. That is why points betting is all about how right you are when placing a wager.

DraftKings at Three Wild Rose Locations Plus Online

DraftKings went live online in February 2020, while the retail locations at Wild Rose Clinton, Wild Rose Jefferson, and Wild Rose Emmetsburg launched in October the previous year.

DraftKings provides its customers with a wide range of betting options, plenty of odds boosts, and promotions for existing customers. If you still don't have an account on their platform, you can create one for free and benefit from their matched bonus of up to $1,000. Plus, you will also get a free bet of $50. For this month only, if you sign up to their platform during March Madness and opt-in to the 40-1 odds boost offer for the NCAA tournament game, and then place a minimum wager of $5 on any of the remaining teams. If your wager is correct, you will get $200 in free bets.

Besides their numerous betting markets for most sports and leagues available on the Sportsbook, DraftKings is also famous for its betting pools section. It is the only known bookmaker in the USA that offers legal betting pools to their customer.

Elite Sportsbook Online and at Three Locations in the State

Elite Sportsbook isn't as famous as others we mentioned, but they are located in three retail locations and online in Iowa since August 2019. The three casino partners of Elite Sportsbook are Grand Falls, Riverside Casino, and Rhythm City. The sportsbook itself is powered by the Bet.Works tech platform and it was one of the first to launch only breathing William Hill's dust by less than two weeks. The sportsbook isn't available in many other states, so Iowa is one of the few places, including Colorado, you can bet with them online. New customers get a 100% bonus up to $500 if their first wager on the platform loses. Read the full T&Cs on the website.

BetRivers Sportsbook Available Online Only

BetRivers launched in Iowa on January 4th, 2021, but they are only available via their online platform. There isn't a retail sportsbook available in the stat right now. BetRivers are owned by Rush Street Interactive and are a quite popular sportsbook in other states, including Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, and Colorado. Their casino partner in Iowa is Wild Rose Casino. The same casino already has a partnership with DraftKings, so the BetRivers deal is for an online-only platform.

The welcome offer at BetRivers provides new customers with a welcome bonus of up to a $250 deposit match, which may not seem much, but the wagering requirements of the bonus are only x1, so this already makes it one of the most beneficial welcome bonuses in the country. They also offer a wide array of betting markets and plenty of promotions for existing customers. Their loyalty program is also one of the best in the country (iRush Rewards program) and with it, you can buy different bonuses and promotions on the online platform. The higher you are in the ten-ties rewards system the more perks you will get, including promos for any of the physical locations that BetRivers has around the US.

Unibet in the USA via Harrah's Council Bluffs

Unibet launched their sportsbook in Iowa in September 2021, but the deal was signed between the Kindred Group and Caesars Entertainment back in February 2020. The Unibet Sportsbook provides a $500 risk-free bet to all of their new customers. This offer is only available if you follow the terms and conditions of the bonus. Also, if your first bet wins, you won't receive the bonus offer, while if your first bet loses, you will get refunded up to $500 within 72 hours.

Fubo Sportsbook via Casino Queen Marquette

Fubo is a well-known sports streaming service in the USA, but they recently joined the sports betting community, as well. Right now, it is only live in Iowa via a casino partnership with Casino Queen Marquette, which is the casino's second online skin. We expect it to launch in other states, as well, sometime in 2022.

The Fubo Sportsbook has plans to eventually integrate their live streaming service and their sportsbook, which will bring sports betting options to FuboTV subscribers, as well, as bring high-quality live streaming to bettors. It will be an interesting partnership, and we can't wait to see what they bring us. New customers at Fubo Sportsbook can play either online or via the iOS mobile app they have and benefit from a risk-free offer of up to $1,000, which is similar to other popular brand offers.

Online Sports Betting Iowa at Other Sportsbooks

Other online sportsbooks in Iowa offer promotions for new customers and are popular in the state. Since all nineteen casinos in the state have an option to partner with three separate sportsbooks to provide three mobile skins, the potential of sportsbooks in the state is very high. Most of them were waiting for the physical registration rule to expire in 2021 to launch their online-only products. Other legal sportsbooks in Iowa are:

  • Betway via Wild Rose since October 2021
  • Circa Sportsbook via Diamond Jo since October 2021
  • DRF Sportsbook via Lakeside Casino since January 2022
  • Bally Bet via Elite Casino Resort – Grand Falls since June 2021
  • theScore Bet via Ameristar since February 2021
  • BetFred via Grand Falls since September 2020
  • Hard Rock Sportsbook via Hard Rock Sioux City since December 2019
  • Q Sportsbook via Q Casino since November 2019
  • Barstool Sportsbook via Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs since 2021

One of the speculated sportsbooks that will be launching in Iowa shortly is Tipico Sportsbook. We also suspect that we will see FOX Bet, 888 Sport, Bet365, and TwinSpires in Iowa sometime in the future if they secure a license.

Some of these sportsbooks don't have a retail location, yet, including Bally Bet, Unibet, BetRivers, Fubo Sportsbook, Circa Sportsbook, and Betway. That is why all of these sportsbooks launched after the physical registration restriction ended in 2021. They have unique welcome offers available and some of them offer exclusive perks to their customers.
