Hot Hawks Take on Top-Seeded Heat
The Atlanta Hawks did not parlay last year’s trip to the Eastern Conference Finals to early success this season. Atlanta was 17-25 midway through January, but the team is 28-14 ever since. This is an offensive-driven team as evident by the No. 2 ranking in Offensive Rating and No. 26 in Defensive Rating.
Trae Young has been great, and the Hawks are 14-3 when he scores at least 35 points in a game. But one of those losses was to Miami on April 8, so the Hawks will have to step up their game against the No. 1 seed in the conference.
As for the Heat, the top seed looked to be slipping away in late March after a season-worst four-game losing streak saw the Celtics, 76ers, and Bucks clawing at Miami’s feet. But after a huge win in Boston on March 30, the Heat rebounded to win six in a row before losing an irrelevant finale against Orlando with the starters resting.
The Heat are a balanced team with a No. 6 ranking in Net Rating. Miami covered 56.8% of the time this season, tied for the fourth-best spread record in the league. Miami has been underwhelming as a home favorite (17-19 ATS), but the Hawks only cover an NBA-low 25% of the time as a road underdog this season (6-18 ATS).
This series could be extra difficult for Atlanta if it is without its top two rebounders (Clint Capela and John Collins) due to injuries. The Heat won three of the four meetings this season, though the last matchup was decided by just four points.
