Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Game 2 Preview
The Grizzlies heard the criticism coming into this series that they cannot shoot the three like the Warriors, and they would not be able to come back from double digits in the fourth quarter like they did to Minnesota in the first round.
That was only somewhat true in Game 1. The Grizzlies attempted an unorthodox 40 threes, made more at a higher rate than Golden State, and they did take a late lead despite trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter. But in closing time, the Grizzlies’ strength failed them as Ja Morant was denied going to the basket by Steph Curry (blocked shot) and Klay Thompson (game-winning defense on layup attempt at buzzer). In fact, there were no points scored in the final 36 seconds after Thompson’s shot put the Warriors ahead by one point.
The Warriors are going to have to find more secondary scoring as only Morant and a career-game from Jaren Jackson Jr. (33 points) had more than 14 points. The Warriors also managed to win despite losing Draymond Green to an ejection for a flagrant foul just before halftime. The Grizzlies scored fewer points in the second half than they did in the first half with Green playing.
The Warriors had 16 offensive rebounds in Game 1 after never having more than eight in the first four matchups with the Grizzlies this season. Memphis is 3-17 when losing the rebound battle this season as opposed to the Warriors, who are 15-15 when that happens.
The Grizzlies now face essentially a must-win game. Either way, the Warriors have won 12 straight series after winning Game 1.
