Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors Game 2 Preview
After embarrassing the Suns in Game 7 on Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks were humbled by the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 on Wednesday night. Golden State won the first and third quarters by 10 points each on its way to an easy 112-87 win. You know it’s a bad night for Dallas when Luka Doncic is outplayed by Andrew Wiggins.
The Dallas offense has settled for a three-point shot on 50% of its field goals this postseason, and that inability to attack the paint was costly in Game 1. The Mavericks shot a season-high 48 threes but only hit 11 of them while shooting under 38% from the field for the third time this season against the Warriors. Doncic scored just 20 points on 6-of-18 shooting with seven turnovers in arguably the worst playoff game of his career.
The three-point shot was about the only thing that underwhelmed for the Warriors, who were 10-for-29 (34.5%) from three. But the offense made up for it with superior ball movement and easy baskets on its way to shooting 67.9% from two-point territory. Seven Warriors scored in double digits, led by Steph Curry’s 21 points. Curry also led the team with 12 rebounds as the Mavericks lost the rebound battle by 16 boards.
Dallas is going to have to be more imaginative on offense, because if it continues to get into a three-point shooting contest, then the Warriors are just warming up. Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole will do better than a combined 2-for-8 from three next time.
