Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Game 5 Preview

The Grizzlies’ ill-fated trip to Golden State saw the team lose both games and superstar Ja Morant, who was playing his best ball, in the process. The Grizzlies led Game 3 by 13 points early before losing by 30 points. The Grizzlies led Game 4 by 12 points in the fourth quarter before Steph Curry scored 18 points in a comeback win, 101-98, to take a 3-1 lead.

Now Morant is reportedly out for the postseason with a bone bruise after injuring his knee late in Game 3. Morant was having a career-hot streak of shooting from three and averaging nearly 40 points per game in this series. His play was much needed with Desmond Bane and Dillon Brooks struggling so much.

Neither played well again in Game 4, yet the Grizzlies still had a chance to win because of how bad the Warriors shot. Even on wide-open shots, the Warriors were 8-for-24, by far their worst shooting game of the series after having their best shooting game all season on Saturday. Regression hit hard as Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole were 0-for-10 from three.

But Curry still played well and the Warriors defended Memphis well. With Bane’s back giving him problems and Brooks being so unreliable, it is hard to see Jaren Jackson Jr. and reserve Kyle Anderson being enough to carry the Grizzlies to a win. They did play center Steven Adams almost 30 minutes in Game 4 after he’s barely played this series, and the veteran had 10 points and 15 rebounds as it gave the Grizzlies more size. But the perimeter shooting for the Warriors is almost certainly going to be better than it was on Monday night.

This feels like a good spot for the Warriors to impress and eliminate the Grizzlies at home. Remember, this is the first time since 2019 that the Warriors had their core of Curry, Thompson, and Draymond Green together healthy. That core made it to five straight NBA Finals, and now with Jordan Poole in the mix, the Warriors are only five wins away from another trip there.

Common Questions for Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Game 5

Who is favored to win this game?

At BetMGM, the Warriors are a 4-point road favorite in Game 5. The line jumped from 2.5 to 4 after the news broke that Morant’s postseason is likely over.

What is the over/under for total points?

At BetMGM, the game has a total of 218.5 points, which dropped from 220.5 after the Morant news broke. Either way, it is the lowest total yet in the series.

How often does the team leading 3-1 win in Game 5?

The Warriors are 7-4 in Game 5 when leading a series 3-1. But all NBA teams leading 3-1 are just 20-55 (.267) in Game 5 when they are the road team like Golden State will be.

Who is coaching the Warriors in Game 5?

Steve Kerr was a surprise scratch in Game 4 after testing positive for COVID. He is doubtful to be on the sidelines in Game 5, so assistant Mike Brown, the newly hired head coach of the Sacramento Kings, is going to be the coach again. In a way this means he is the head coach of two NBA teams at the same time, another oddity only made possible by the pandemic.

Where can I stream or watch this game?

The game is televised on TNT this Wednesday evening at 9:30 p.m. ET. It can also be watched on NBA League Pass or any streaming service that has TNT, such as Hulu + Live TV, FuboTV, or YouTube TV.
