The Hawks had to shake things up. After winning at least 40 games for three straight seasons and making the playoffs in those seasons as well, last season, the Hawks failed to do both. Now, just three seasons removed from that playoff run, they ended the 2023-24 season by only winning 36 games. They had an over\/under of 42.5 by oddsmakers before the season. The Hawks missed the playoffs last season after being eliminated in the Play-In Tournament.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of the Hawks disappointing season can be attributed to Young missing time from injury. Another reason is the lack of fit between him and fellow guard <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murrade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dejounte Murray<\/a>. Murray played two seasons with Young after the Hawks traded for the defensive guard to support Young\u2019s defensive deficiencies. The Hawks <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/what-is-the-hawks-record-when-both-dejaunte-murray-and-trae-young-play\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were only 55-62<\/a> when Murray and Young played together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Changing Directions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawks 36-win season landed them the number one overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. They took a risk and picked widely unproven 19-year-old Frenchman <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/risacza01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zaccharie Risacher<\/a>. Risacher has an enticing upside but likely won\u2019t be helping the Hawks win many games this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest move for the Hawks this offseason was cutting ties with the Young-Murray backcourt.\u00a0 They traded Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans for <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/daniedy01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dyson Daniels,<\/a>\u00a0<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nancela02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Nance Jr.<\/a> and draft capital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Zaccharie Risacher after practice today <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ToeLalqgRj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/ToeLalqgRj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; jackson caudell (@jacksoncaudell) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jacksoncaudell\/status\/1841202367800492376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 1, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the Hawks are hoping that a healthy season from Young, continued improvement from surprise standout <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Johnson<\/a>, and a general reset will help them improve from last season. Daniels and Nance Jr. will contribute to a solid bench unit, but this team will likely go as far as Young can carry them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Atlanta Hawks Odds<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlanta Hawks projected over\/under win total for next season is set at 35.5 (over -115, under -105). This line is intriguing as they barely eclipsed the 35-win mark last season, and Young missed significant time. Atlanta hasn\u2019t won less than 36 games since Young\u2019s second season in 2020-21. Therefore, if he is healthy and on the Hawks throughout the season, the over seems like a real possibility.
