After a one-year pit stop in Portland, Brogdon entered Washington on an expiring $22.5 million contract. Speculation was that he would not remain in Washington long term due to his contract; however, with his injury taking place, not only is his play on hold but so are Washington’s probable plans of moving his early season. The report came from The Athletic’s Josh Robbins.

Brogdon injured his shooting hand during a preseason practice. The Wizards were in Montreal to open their preseason against the Toronto Raptors. Brogdon did not remain with the team but was instead sent back to Washington to undergo tests. While it is estimated that he will miss at least a month, the severity of his injury is still up in the air. The Wizards will play out the remainder of their preseason without him.

From ROTY to Journeyman

What began as a promising career has become somewhat of an “over here, over there” type of career for Brogdon. Drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016, Brogdon quickly became a stable roster piece alongside a much younger Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. However, the Bucks shipped their former rookie of the year out of town in 2019. It was a sign-and-trade situation that sent Brogdon to Indiana. After three seasons with the Pacers, Brogdon was once again on the move. His one season in Boston earned him a Sixth Man of the Year award. However, that achievement couldn’t earn him a more extended stay with the Celtics. Boston faired just fine, though, considering Jrue Holiday was the return in a trade involving Brogdon.

After another one-year stop in Portland and now in Washington, Brogdon’s once-promising career isn’t what many expected of him early on. Although, considering he’s just one year removed from winning Sixth Man of the Year, evidently, he still has some solid game left in him.

What Happens Now…

Due to his contract situation, the Wizards were likely to move Brogdon at some point this season. He will be a prime trade candidate post-recovery, though, and several teams should be in the mix to acquire him as the season progresses.

Brogdon has never averaged less than double digits in his career and is a very respectable 39.1% from three. His overall production has been solid. He easily carries the abilities to earn a backup point guard spot on a contending team. Provided he recovers nicely from his hand mishap, don’t be surprised to see Washington move him elsewhere down the line.

Eight-year NBA veteran and Washington Wizards offseason addition Malcolm Brogdon will miss at least a month due to injury.
