Led by their<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/02\/2024-25-nba-mvp-odds-sga-could-win-his-first-mvp\/\" target=\"_self\"> MVP candidate<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gilgesh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shai Gilgeous-Alexander<\/a>, and Coach of the Year winner <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/coaches\/daignma99c.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Daigneault<\/a>, they were a top-four offense and defense and had the second-best record in the NBA. They demolished their over\/under win total of 44.5 by winning 57 games and defied expectations by reaching the Conference Semifinals for the first time since <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a> left.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only did Gilgeous-Alexander establish himself as a perennial <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/19\/2024-25-nba-mvp-odds-can-nikola-jokic-win-a-fourth-mvp\/\" target=\"_self\">MVP candidate<\/a>, but the other young Thunder stars showed why they could be a core to reckon with for a long time. Rookie of the Year runner-up <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holmgch01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chet Holmgren<\/a> averaged 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks in his debut season. Sophomore <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willija06.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jalen Williams<\/a> improved upon an impressive rookie season by averaging 19.1 points and 4.5 assists last season. Instead, they kept their key pieces while upgrading the Thunder roster with savvy off-season pickups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thunder traded <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/giddejo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Giddey<\/a> to the Chicago Bulls this offseason and picked up defensive specialist <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carusal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Caruso<\/a>. Pairing Caruso with Holmgren, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dortlu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lu Dort<\/a>, and the rest of the hungry Thunder will likely produce another top NBA defense. They went over their win total last season by 13 games, and the season before, they exceeded it by 17 games. This season, the Thunder over\/under win total projects them for 56.5 wins, their highest projected win total since the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/02\/top-5-nba-power-forwards-heading-into-the-2024-25-season\/\" target=\"_self\">Durant<\/a> era. Oddsmakers have the over set at -115 and the under at -105.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although 56.5 wins is the second-highest projected win total in the league, it is still one win less than the Thunder won last season. The Thunder have shown massive improvement in each of the last three seasons, and they don\u2019t seem to be getting worse anytime soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing Giddey will certainly affect the Thunder\u2019s playmaking options, but adding Hartenstein and Caruso makes their defense and depth much stronger. Optimist bettors will cite the likely improvement of Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren, and Williams as reasons to take over. 56.5 wins for the Thunder.
