{"id":98989,"date":"2024-10-02T09:52:51","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T13:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=98989"},"modified":"2024-10-02T09:52:51","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T13:52:51","slug":"big-east-recruiting-steals-led-by-some-of-conferences-top-stars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/10\/02\/big-east-recruiting-steals-led-by-some-of-conferences-top-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"Big East Recruiting Steals Led By Some Of Conference&#8217;s Top Stars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at Big East recruiting, UConn remained hot on the recruiting trail with the recent <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/college-basketball\/news\/uconn-basketball-recruiting-top-five-sg-darius-adams-commits-as-first-member-of-huskies-2025-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commitment of guard Darius Adams<\/span><\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Adams is ESPN&#8217;s No. 19 rated player in the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-sports\/basketball\/recruiting\/playerrankings\/_\/order\/true\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Class of 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marking the third straight season the Huskies received a commitment from a top-20 player. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/castlst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephon Castle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Liam McNeeley led the way in the previous two UConn recruiting classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every big-time player in the Big East comes into the conference as a top recruit. Let&#8217;s take a look back and see where they were rated coming out of high school. It could be a reminder that the top players might be ones who fly a bit under the radar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marquette&#8217;s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/kam-jones-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kam Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Creighton&#8217;s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/ryan-kalkbrenner-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Kalkbrenner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are among the Big East players to keep an eye on. They are showing up in the Vegas Insider <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.vegasinsider.com\/college-basketball\/odds\/wooden-award\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wooden Award odds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heading into the 2024-25 season. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/12\/breaking-down-the-top-10-big-east-mens-basketball-matchups\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big East schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins on Dec. 10. It won&#8217;t take long for the top returning players to prove that they were undervalued in the recruiting process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With the calendar flipping to October, teams will get to work. This is looking like another special season in the Big East, and the talented recruits who stuck around are a major reason why that is the case.<\/p>\n<h2>Big East Recruiting Steals Led By Some Of Conference&#8217;s Top Stars<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When looking at past Big East recruiting classes, Kam Jones was the No. 28-rated shooting guard. He was also the No. 107-ranked player in the 247sports.com database in the Class of 2021. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sharpsh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaedon Sharpe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chrisma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Max Christie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hawkijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan Hawkins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/podzibr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandin Podziemski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are among the shooting guards ranked ahead of Jones in his recruiting class who are now in the NBA.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is such clean offensive flow from Marquette. Jones averaged 15.1 and 17.2 points per game in his last two seasons. He averaged 22 points in the 2024 NCAA tournament. Jones had four 30-point games during the regular season. Perhaps the best is yet to come for Jones this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Karaban Eyeing Another National Title At UConn<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UConn star <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/alex-karaban-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Karaban<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another player from the Class of 2021 who finished outside the top 100 in the national recruiting rankings. It is hard to argue with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/banchpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paolo Banchero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithja05.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jabari Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the top two power forwards in that <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/season\/2021-basketball\/recruitrankings\/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&amp;Position=PF\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recruiting class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Karaban was a big catch in the Big East recruiting battles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karaban&#8217;s scoring average jumped from 9.3 points as a freshman to 13.3 during the 2023-24 season. He has a pair of national championships at UConn&#8212;something the other Class of 2021 power forwards don&#8217;t have. Expect more from Karaban since he is UConn&#8217;s only returning starter. The lack of individual accolades fuels Karaban this season, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.stamfordadvocate.com\/sports\/uconn-mens-basketball\/article\/alex-karaban-awards-honors-uconn-huskies-19800638.php\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as he told the Stamford Advocate<\/a>:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In my opinion, I think I&#8217;ve been snubbed the past two years with awards.\u00a0That&#8217;s motivation itself.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Top 100 Recruit Becomes Top-Rated Transfer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been quite the journey for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/kadary-richmond-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kadary Richmond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after Seton Hall came up with a key win in the Big East recruiting battles. He was rated as the 92nd best recruit in his class coming out of Brewster Academy. However, when he made the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/story\/_\/id\/40101374\/kadary-richmond-transfers-seton-hall-st-johns\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision to transfer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Seton Hall to St. John&#8217;s, the 247sports.com database had Richmond as the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/season\/2024-basketball\/transferportaltop\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top incoming transfer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richmond has plenty of opportunities to shine for the Red Storm with the roster bolstered heading into <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/coaches\/rick-pitino-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rick Pitino<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s second year as the head coach. Richmond has a chance to impress the pro scouts until the tutelage of one of the best coaches in college basketball history. Circle the calendar on Jan. 18, as Richmond and the Red Storm face Seton Hall at the Prudential Center on that day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kalkbrenner Among the Big East Recruiting Gems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 7-foot-1 Ryan Kalkbrenner was just outside the top 100 in the 247sports.com <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/season\/2020-basketball\/recruitrankings\/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&amp;Position=C\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Class of 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recruiting rankings. He was rated as the No. 19 center in his class. Many of the centers rated ahead of him are already in the NBA. It will be interesting to monitor the NBA interest in Kalkbrenner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalkbrenner finished third on the 2023-24 Creighton team in scoring last season. With <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scheiba01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baylor Scheierman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alexatr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trey Alexander<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both looking to stick in the NBA, Kalkbrenner could improve his scoring average. He is coming off a season when he averaged 17.3 points in his fourth year at Creighton.
