{"id":98637,"date":"2024-09-30T18:46:59","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T22:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=98637"},"modified":"2024-09-30T18:46:59","modified_gmt":"2024-09-30T22:46:59","slug":"phoenix-suns-stars-heap-praise-on-tyus-jones-signing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/30\/phoenix-suns-stars-heap-praise-on-tyus-jones-signing\/","title":{"rendered":"Phoenix Suns Stars Heap Praise On Tyus Jones Signing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The signing of point guard <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jonesty01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyus Jones<\/a> has proved very popular with the Phoenix Suns stars.\u00a0 As they looked ahead to the new season on media day, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bookede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin Booker<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bealbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bradley Beal<\/a> expressed their delight in welcoming Jones to the squad.<\/p>\n<p>The Suns were very limited in who they could add in the off-season.\u00a0 They are currently in the second apron of the luxury tax, with $150m committed to the big three of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a>, Booker and Beal.\u00a0 According to ESPN\u2019s <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BobbyMarks42\/status\/1784090536002879751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bobby Marks<\/a>, this is higher than the payroll of 14 teams in the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the Suns front office needed to make shrewd signings to put together a strong roster capable of competing for an NBA championship.\u00a0 They re-signed <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/allengr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grayson Allen<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/onealro01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royce O\u2019Neale<\/a> to longer-term contracts, but veteran minimum deals were all they could add.\u00a0 One of those was Jones, and to get him so cheap makes him one of the best additions in the league.<\/p>\n<p>Jones will likely command a bigger contract next off-season, meaning his stay in Phoenix may only be a year.\u00a0 Owner Mat Ishbia admitted he was surprised they got the deal done but wants to keep him beyond this season.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWe didn\u2019t think we had a chance at the beginning, to be honest with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love having Tyus here, and hopefully, it\u2019s not for just one year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Phoenix Suns Stars Heap Praise On Tyus Jones Signing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>No More Point Book<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For large parts of last season, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/23\/top-25-nba-players-2024-25-no-14-devin-booker\/\" target=\"_self\">Booker<\/a> took on the role of the point guard, sharing these responsibilities with Beal.\u00a0 It produced the best creative campaign of his career, but in an ideal world, the Suns want the 27-year-old to have an increased focus on scoring.\u00a0 Booker averaged a career-high <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/player\/1626164\/devin-booker\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6.9 assists<\/a> alongside 27.1 points.<\/p>\n<p>Booker was certainly impressed with the signing and noted that it caught the attention of other players saying, \u201cWe can say it how it is. We got him for a steal.\u00a0 I remember the news broke when we were at [Team] USA, and all the guys in the locker room were like, \u2018Man, how did y\u2019all get that done?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Devin Booker on <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Suns?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#Suns<\/a> adding Tyus Jones<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember the news being broke while we&#39;re at USA, and all the guys in the locker rooms like, \u2018Man, how did y&#39;all get that done.\u2019\u201d <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PkBmbtpJNh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/PkBmbtpJNh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Burn City Suns \u2600\ufe0f (@BurnCitySuns) <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BurnCitySuns\/status\/1840835898902036489?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 30, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A huge problem for the Suns was their poor ball security and proneness to turnovers.\u00a0 Having two shooting guards as the main ball handlers did not help, and this led to very sloppy fourth-quarter performances.\u00a0 The team ranked bottom of the league for fourth-quarter points and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/traditional?Period=4&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=TOV\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">27th in fourth-quarter turnovers<\/a>.\u00a0 This was the result of not having a game manager for the closing minutes.<\/p>\n<p>However, they acquired one of the best players to alleviate this issue.\u00a0 Jones has led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio in each of the last six seasons and achieved the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/suns\/news\/suns-sign-tyus-jones\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best single-season mark in history<\/a> last year with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/07\/are-the-washington-wizards-finally-trying-to-escape-mediocrity\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Wizards<\/a>.\u00a0 He turned the ball over just 66 times whilst recording 485 assists, a 7.35 ratio.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Back to Being Brad<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Another player that this signing will greatly benefit is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2023\/07\/25\/evaluating-bradley-beal-as-the-suns-point-guard\/\" target=\"_self\">Beal<\/a>.\u00a0 Many questioned whether he would come off the bench in favour of Jones, but the plan is to start them both in the backcourt.\u00a0 The former Wizards star is excited at the prospect of playing alongside his new teammate, as it allows him to return to a role he is comfortable with.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI can definitely go back to being the Brad we all have hoped.\u00a0 I\u2019m excited for it for sure.
