This was a bit of a shock as Walker, a former first-round pick, was considered one of the top guards in this year’s free agency class. Many believe Walker is simply too good to play on a training camp deal. Regardless, at this year’s media day for the Celtics, Walker spoke about signing with the team. Furthermore, he provided a little bit of context for what his role with the team will be. Walker revealed he may spend time in the G League, but he is “perfectly fine with that” and is willing to earn a guaranteed contract.

“(Brad Stevens) also mentioned that there’s a possibility that I might spend some time in the G League with Maine, and honestly, I’m perfectly fine with that,” Walker said. “Because as a man, you’ve got to take it on the chin. You’ve got to continue to work. You have to continue to be prepared and just keep being ready. I think I’m mentally prepared for almost any outcome that may pop up, and I know sooner or later that the worm will turn and that the light’s still at the end of the tunnel.”

Last season, Walker averaged 9.7 points per game with the Brooklyn Nets. On the year, he shot 42.3% from the field and 38.4% from the three-point line.

Lonnie Walker IV Speaks About Role With Celtics

Examining Lonnie Walker IV’s Fit in Boston

Signing Walker is as low-risk of a move as any team can make at this point in the year. He is a fantastic player who has become a more consistent perimeter shooter throughout his career. The Celtics are the reigning champions and are the team to beat again ahead of the 2024-25 season. Currently, they have one roster spot remaining. At this point, it seems likely they will keep that spot open as they prepare for the regular season. However, based on talent alone, there is no reason Walker should not earn that spot.

Walker is a veteran who provides a lot of offense and athleticism. For one reason or another, he was unable to get a standard contract this summer. However, nobody will deny that he belongs on an NBA team. If he does eventually make his way onto the roster officially, he will provide a major boost to the team’s second unit.

The Last Word On the Boston Celtics

The Celtics had as good of an offseason as they possibly could have had this summer. After winning a championship in June, the team brought back nearly every player from last year’s team. Only Svi Mykhailiuk (signed with the Utah Jazz) and Oshae Brissett (unsigned) have departed from the team. On the flip side, in addition to Walker, the Celtics added Baylor Scheierman and Anton Watson in this year’s draft. Scheierman may make an immediate contribution to the team, whereas Watson is on a two-way contract.

Many teams in the Eastern Conference improved this summer. However, as it currently stands, the Celtics are a serious threat to repeat as NBA champions.

Late in August, the Boston Celtics signed shooting guard Lonnie Walker IV to an Exhibit 10 contract.
