The wheels were put in motion during the 2022-23 season, with Brooklyn trading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a> to the Phoenix Suns and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrie Irving<\/a> to the Dallas Mavericks. The year prior, they traded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a>, now with the Los Angeles Clippers, to the Phoenix Suns.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, that\u2019s 32 All-Star selections and 82,968 career points that went\u00a0missing from the Nets\u2019 roster. In return, Brooklyn received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Simmons<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/drumman01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre Drummond<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Curry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dinwisp01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spencer Dinwiddie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/finnedo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorian Finney-Smith<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikal Bridges<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsca02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cameron Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vauleju01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Juan Valet<\/a>, eight first-round picks, and four second-round picks. Today, only Simmons, Finney-Smith, and Johnson remain on the roster.<\/p>\n<p>However, after trading Bridges this offseason, both Finney-Smith and Johnson are <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/06\/26\/whos-next-to-get-traded-by-the-brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">now on the trade block<\/a>. Simmons may be on the move as well. At least that\u2019s what the Nets are hoping for.<\/p>\n<h2>Nets Hope To Move Ben Simmons At Trade Deadline<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIf he suddenly becomes 15 (points), five (rebounds), and five (assists), maybe it works,\u201d reports Nets Daily\u2019s Bob Windrem. \u201cThe other thing is, even if he does 15-5-5, the numbers of teams that are going to be competing for him is going to be small because of those two back surgeries. The second surgery was less complicated and different than the first surgery. You want a little news? He\u2019s been playing 5-on-5 for several weeks. It\u2019s not just that he\u2019s been cleared\u2026 That\u2019s encouraging because if you look last year, that was not the case. He\u2019s more advanced now than he was then.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>No Surprise Here<\/h3>\n<p>Simmons being expendable to the Nets comes as no shock whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his hot start after being drafted first overall in 2016, questions about his durability and mentality have been loud since the 2021 NBA Playoffs. In the beginning, it may have been a slight overreaction to a bad on-court decision that went viral. Then, he missed all of 2021-22 with a back injury. When he returned, the elite passer became increasingly passive.<\/p>\n<p>He was always more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magic Johnson<\/a> than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeBron James<\/a>. However, even Johnson knew he had to put pressure on defenses, averaging 19.7 points per game in his All-Star seasons. While with the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons averaged 15.9 points per game; not dominant but still respectable.<\/p>\n<p>Since being traded to the Nets, Simmons has mustered just 6.7 points per game. Even worse, he\u2019s only played 57 games in two seasons, his back still ailing him. Nonetheless, Simmons\u2019s basketball IQ, passing prowess, and defensive impact are still highly regarded. As Windrem notes, if he can produce the way he did with the Sixers, Brooklyn might be able to see him playing there long-term.<\/p>\n<p>Still, players on expiring contracts \u2014like Simmons \u2014are often used as trade bait. With Simmons making $40.4 million in 2024-25, such a salary could land the Nets a star-caliber player. The biggest question is: what teams would be motivated to make such a deal considering Simmons\u2019s injury history and decline?<\/p>\n<h3>Who Could He Be Traded For?<\/h3>\n<p>Looking around the NBA, there are several players making a salary similar to Simmons\u2019s. Among them, Miami Heat forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Butler<\/a> and Atlanta Hawks guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trae Young<\/a> may be <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/12\/nets-ben-simmons-reason-jimmy-butler-very-interested\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">the most realistic targets<\/a>. Despite their star status, both players have to prove themselves to their current organization.<\/p>\n<p>In Butler\u2019s case, the problem is durability, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/05\/07\/heat-jimmy-butler-agent-fires-back-pat-riley\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">his team\u2019s reluctance to offer him<\/a> a max contract extension. In Young\u2019s case, it may be maturity and his ability to impact the game without the ball. The Hawks even <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/07\/19\/nba-rumors-updates-trae-young-trade-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">put him on the trade block<\/a> this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>If the Nets make a trade for either player, it would certainly accelerate their rebuild. However, that may not be Brooklyn\u2019s M.O. anymore. Instead, they might hope to make a deal moving Simmons for a combination of players.
